Warner Brings 'I Am Legend' to Blu-ray, HD DVD

Warner has inadvertantly revealed plans to bring the Will Smith blockbuster 'I Am Legend' to high-def this spring.

Thanks to some promotional materials being shipped to retailers ahead of the official announce, we can tell you that the Blu-ray edition of the $200 million-plus grossing sci-fi smash will hit stores March 18 (day-and-date with the standard-def DVD), to be followed three weeks later by the HD DVD on April 8.

Early word is that the two high-def releases will include both the theatrical and unrated versions of the movie (complete with an alternate ending), though whether seamless branching (or some other interactivity) is involved remains unknown.

There were no further tech specs or extras details available at press time, but the studio tells us that the official media release is coming in the days ahead, so we'll certainly keep you posted.

Warner has set a suggested list price for $35.98 for the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions.

Fox Delays 'Master & Commander' Blu-ray (Again)

The Blu-ray release of 'Master & Commander' has hit more rough waters, with Fox delaying its planned February bow.

Originally pegged for a a high-def release on October 2, the studio eventually yanked the release citing last-minute production delays. Now Fox has pulled the plug on the Blu-ray for the second time, this time attributing the delay to marketing reasons.



Although the studio stopped short of issuing a new street date, a Fox rep tells us that it is realigning the Blu-ray release of 'Master & Commander' to coincide with an upcoming Father's Day promotion planned for the spring.

The rep also confirmed that the same promotion will see 'Master & Commander' joined by two other Fox/MGM Blu-ray titles that were shelved late last year -- 'A Bridge Too Far' and 'Battle of Britain.'

At press time there were no plans to alter the originally announced Blu-ray specs for 'Master & Commander' upon its eventual release.

The disc's retail price will also remain unchanged at a suggested $39.98 list.

Fox Plots 'Hitman' Blu-ray for March

In an early alert to retailers, Fox has set a March arrival for the action smash 'Hitman,' which will come to Blu-ray in a never-before-seen unrated cut.

Scoring nearly $100 million at the worldwide box office, the Timothy Olyphant-Dougray Scott starrer will debut on Blu-ray in a new 94-minute unrated cut on March 11, day-and-date with the standard-def DVD.



Tech specs are set to include 1080p video and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround audio, along with French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and subtitle options.

Due to the early nature of the retail announcement, the disc's supplemental details were not yet available, but an official media release is expected shortly -- we'll keep you posted.

Blu-ray Dominates Disc Sales Chart Post-Warner Announcement

The Blu-ray camp took a decisive lead in disc sales for the week ending January 13th, the first full week following Warner's announcement that it would abandon its HD DVD support.

Though Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD in overall disc sales by a factor of nearly 2:1 since the start of 2007, last week saw the largest gulf between the two rival formats yet, with Blu-ray commanding an 85% share of all high-def discs sold.

Home Media Magazine is reporting that of the top ten high-def discs sold on either format, not a single HD DVD disc made the list, with the top-selling HD DVD disc ('The Kingdom') moving only one tenth as many units as the best selling Blu-ray title, '3:10 to Yuma.'

While it's too soon to tell whether Warner's announcement had a direct effect on Blu-ray's stronger-than-ever disc sales lead, HD DVD had been holding steady with a relatively strong 39% share of high-def disc sales in the last weeks of the 2007 holiday shopping season.
