Honey, u dah bela rabbits for 6-7 years kan? Can i know how long is ur rabbit life span? Any of them live more than 3 - 4 years?

My Nino was 2years++ when he died... He was suffer from several disease like runny eyes and jaw abscess. And soon after that, he died from emphysema disease. The vet said, emphysema is a rare disease. I made some research after Nino's death and found out that emphysema is cause by multi-factor, such as including lack of nutrition.

I tot i aredi took a best care for him. I treated him like my own baby. But when i think again, i realize that i was MISTREAT him.

He was crazy about food. Everytime he saw me eating something, he would come and sniff at me. And u know what his favourite food? He loved Chipsmore, Banana Cookies, Lover Letter, Benggali bread, Durian and even Burger!! He was crazy about burger... He loved the smell of the burger and will beg to get some (of course i only let him eat the bun, not the whole burger).. He hate hay/green veges and he only ate Briter Bunny pellet. And i think this is how he got that emphysema - MALNUTRITION!

Please dont repeat my mistake. And like Sangterap always repeat here- please make some research/reading and take a good care of ur bunny..

Here are some info for u guys. Please read :

Intestinal Emphysema is an uncommon disorder characterized by presence of gas-filled cysts within the wall of some parts of gastrointestinal tract.

It is proposed that Intestinal Emphysema may have been caused by a combination of bacteria, nutritional, and perhaps host factors. An unbalance diet may have been the leading factor. Higher fiber and lower starch levels in diet were recommended to resolve the malnutrition problems and to prevent new cases of intestinal emphysema.

This was summarized from my reading of this research : http://www.dcam.upv.es/8wrc/docs/Pathology...cayvlap_mod.pdf.

Mimzy,

Well, I just share my experiences with fellow forumer. If you feel skeptical about what I share, by all means just continue doing what you think is right. Years of experience does not mean anything to me because anyone can be keeping rabbits for more than 1000 years but if they still do not research and learn new things, I believe they will still be stuck at where they started. But what I learn about rabbits so far is that they have very sensitive digestive system and giving a bad diet may help screw things up.

Maybe your breed of rabbits tahan lasak and for you, 2 to 3 years are the maximum lifespan but I would love to have my rabbits around to more than 10 years and hope the same for fellow forumers. Because they do matter to me. And therefore, I try to limit the risk of premature deaths.

Nico,

Nice sharing there, good research work! That is how we can learn together.

And I cannot agree more and can only summarize what you say by saying "WHAT YOU THINK/FEEL IS GOOD FOR YOUR RABBIT MAY NOT BE THE BEST THING FOR IT".

Seeing your rabbit munching away at certain food does not mean it is nutritious and good for it. I also like to eat food at the mamak stall but those food contains too much cholesterols or maybe some bacteria. I makan, I get food poisoning and too much cholesterols caused me to have heart attack.

Same concept that can be applied to both humans and animals.

I agree with u, sangterap.. nod.gif nod.gif nod.gif

Mimzy dear..
There are alot of alternative if u cant afford to buy hay and quality pellet... U can feed them with carrots, apples, and some safe veges n fruits (please read the 1st page).. and u dont have to feed them alot. Can give them as a treat..

And for ur information, we're very sensitive about breeding rabbit as Gulai or Sate Arnab bcoz most of us keep rabbit as pets (and as our besfrens, of course).. hmm.gif And i dont like people breeding rabbit for fun.. And i know, sangterap also suggest us to neuter or rabbits to avoid unwanted pregnancy... nod.gif

Sigh.. they're so cute to be Gulai or Sate Arnab la... cry.gif

I have 2 news to share..

Good news:
After 7 days treatment of antibiotic, BabyDinky's condition is getting better. No white, sticky and smelly discharge from her nose. But she will sneeze everytime she approaches her hay rack. If she sneeze badly, the white discharge will come again. So i need to hand-feed her to avoid her from sneezing. The vet said, maybe she alergy to those alfalfa hay. Some rabbit can get sinus like human also. And i have to continue the medicine for another 3 days, but together with the vitamin.

Bad news:
I found a lump on Daddy's right shoulder. The lump is almost a marble ball sized, hard and red. Small bald spot on the lump. But it isnt attached to his bone or flesh. I suspected it is a banign tumor (it happened to some of my hamsters and it can grows within a nite). I made an appointed with Dr Pillai. Will rush him there after work. Pray for him, ok guys...

I learnt from Nino's death. I always check on my rabbits body to find any lump. And this morning i was so pissed off because i have overlooked Daddy. I should have seen the lump earlier. But everytime i pat Daddy, he will lowers his front body and lays his head on the floor. In this position, the lump is hiding between his shoulder bone and his ear. But this morning, he was busy licking BabyDinky when i touched his neck and find this lump. So shocked + sad + pissed off !!

DaddyDino an active bunny. Unexhaustable when it comes to free-run hour. He can jumps up to 2 feets height cage and landing steadily. And really hope the lump removal procedure will not causing any complication to him. And i have to make sure he wont scratches his surgery wound and comsumes his medicine.

A question here.. How to make ur bunny takes its medicine? I have no problem feeding medicine to Dinky using a syringe (without the needle, of course!). Except when it comes to bitter medicine, i have to hold her tight to my chest using one arm. It's no prob bcoz she still small. But i think i will have a problem feeding medicine to Daddy. He will runs away and struggles hard everytime i try to feed him some vitamin. He even will running away when sees i'm holding the syringe. I'm thinking about adding that medicine in his drinking water but afraid he might not drinks his water. So i think i need somebody to help me holding him tight *sigh*.. Or my last resort is to ask the vet to gives him injection (Alternative for syrup antibiotic. Suitable for stubborn rabbit) <--- my bf will not agree with this. He always reminds me, "No cucuk! No cucuk,"

Please.. pray for him.. I'll let ur know his progress, ya...

Some progress on Daddy:

I sent him to vet yesterday. At first, the vet also tought the lump was a tumor. So he said he's going to give an injection to dissolve the lump and ask me to bring Daddy home and see if it will getting bigger or not. But, soon as the needle touched the lump, the pus came out. So Dr Pillai said, he must flush them out. Normally, Dr Pillai will spray (to numb that affected part) first, but yesterday we're so busy holding Daddy (it needs 4 person to make Daddy sit still...he's so strong!) and the thick pus kept coming out. So Dr Pillai finished the procedure without any bius.

Dr Pillai made a bigger hole using a big needle and flushed. He said it was 3/4 removed. I still need to give Daddy an antibiotic and anti-infalamation and see if the abccess appear again within this 3-4 days.

Soon after returned home (around 7.30pm) , Daddy ran to him cage and sit at the corner. He was stressed. I sliced some apple, pear and carrot and put some timothy (just got from Chin yesterday morning) and alfalfa in his feeding bowl, but he didnt touch. He looked pain everytime i tried to pat him. So i left him alone and settled down himself. I covered his cage with blanket so the others (especially my cat Momoy who always sit on his cage and watching him and the kits) activity wont disturb him.

I peeked his cage to see his condition. I saw he ate, but in a small amount each time.

Daddy is sharing the playpen (linked to his cage and Dinky's cage) with Dinky. So, after i put Dinky back to her cage, i opened Daddy's door if he might want to walk around. About 12.30am, i saw Daddy in the playpen.. walking slowly towards Dinky's cage and laid there. I touched him, and he still showed some pain.

2.00am, Daddy was playing and acting like normal. He ate, he kacau MickyBell and Dinky (become horny again tongue.gif), he shreded the toilet paper.. Wah.. i was so relieved and happy to see him ok. I applied some cream on the wound and he showed no pain this time biggrin.gif.

This morning i tried to feed him antibiotic and anti-inflamation(liquid type) , but he's so stubborn. Only a few drops managed to get into his mouth. The rest habis meleleh, he refused to swallow.. Notty... notty...

Thanx for u guys support biggrin.gif, especially Wchui. He called and replied my sms. I dont want Wchui to feel regret for gave Daddy to me. I promise i'll do all the best i can for Daddy and the kits.

As I mentioned earlier, rabbits' "flu" is not caused by virus, it is cause more by bacteria. Human flu caused by virus and I do not think they can cross species.

Yeah.. i read in article taht said Rabbit cannot get our flu, cough n fever. But rabbit can be a vector (a medium to transfer our disease or othe human).

When sending Daddy to Dr Pillai, i did asked Dr Pillai about neutering Daddy. I want to make sure Daddy is 100% fit when i decide to neuter him (maybe in the next 2 months)..

But when i heard Dr Pillai explained about neutering precedure, i'm not sure i want to continue my intention to get him altered. Dr Pillai told me that he will not using anaesthetic during the procedure. He said, anesthetic is too strong for rabbit. And some of the rabbit will have problem to get concious after the surgery. He said he will do 'locum' <<-- I heard he pronounced it 'locum'.. so i asked wat is 'locum'? He said the rabbit is awake during the surgery. But it will feels numb at the 'part'. (Malay panggil bius). But it has to stay still so that the vet can reachs the 'part' he needs to remove.

But looked at Daddy, the vet said it may be a bit difficult since Daddy will struggle alot. So may be it will take about 30minutes - 2hours to complete the surgery. But Dr Pillai will let me stay with Daddy during the surgery. And Dr Pillai said he wont do spaying (female) because the success percentage for female is depends on the female's condition. (I also asked Dr Pillai to spay Momoy bcoz she makes a lot of trouble when she's on heat. But Dr Pillai adviced me to take a jab every 6 months).

If i REALLY want to decide to neuter Daddy, i have to mentally prepared. Bcoz it can breaks me down to see my pet in pain, suffer and stress (during and after the surgery). How u guys do this? I mean, how u guys prepare urself for this kinda surgery?

Daddy's progress:

Yesterday was the last day for Daddy to take his antibiotic. The lump is still appear, but not as big as before. Every morning and nite i will touch the lump, to make sure it getting smaller. Yes, it's getting slow but the progress seems quite slow la. So now i'm just wait and see the lump, either to go away or to reappear.

Baby Dinky's progress:

I've separated Dinky from the others. Now her cage is in my master bedroom (she's sharing room with me). Her runny nose seems to reappear. The vet asked me to continue the medicine (antibiotic, ciprofloxacin if i'm not mistaken). But i dunno how long shud i feed her with those medicine. When i asked the vet, he said, "As long as u give vitamin along with the antibiotic, u can continue the medicine for 2weeks to 30days,".. But until today (12th days), she doesnt seems to get better. And i'm so worry... Have any of u experienced my situation before? I mean any of u have runny nose rabbits (scuffles?)? Called my vet just now, he asked me to stop the medication, give her some vitamin and supplement and is she's not getting better in a few days, must bring her for jab (another type of antibiotic).

I wud like to share my experience rearing Nino. Nino had a runny nose when he was small (around 3-4months old) after i walked him outside (at the rooftop of my apartment's carpark). After taking some antibiotic, he got better. But after a few month, he suffered from runny eye (his left eye). It was watery and smelly and i had to wipe his eye as frequent as can, but it wasnt contagious to the other eye. Sometimes, when he shook his head and the water got into my eyes, i felt so itchy and i need to flush my eyes thoroughly with water. He suffered this condition for more than a year (until the day he died). I'd sent him to Dr Pillai so many times. From oral-comsumed-liquid antibiotic and jabs, it didnt change anything to his eye. But his condition didnt effect his daily routine.

But after i read some articles about runny eyes and nose, i know this is REALLY serious and almost untreatable. And i dont want it to happen to any of my bunnies.... sad.gif sad.gif

I'm so susah hati woooo...! cry.gif cry.gif

PANCHO, are u sure ur rabbit has no wetness anymore? Coz it looks dirty and wet. Try to wipe its face using damp cloth or trim the fur a bit. And please seek the vet's advice. Bcoz like sangterap said, it looks like u bunny is having scuffles.

KY8, RM100 per session for vet's consultation? I dont think it's that expensive. It depends on the pet's condition. Some of the vets offer their service with reasonable fees. My vet only charge me around RM30-RM80 per session for my rabbits. RM10 per bottle (for antibiotics, anti-inflamation, calendula gel, vitamin). RM30 for minor surgery (abscess removal, wounds treatment etc). I also went to other vet if Dr Pillai (my regular vet) is not available and the other vets also charge me almost the same fees.

DJSPINNET, ur father is in Penang? Can i know which vet he always visit when ur bunny get sick? 9 years old bunny huh? I also pray that all my bunnies will stay healthy and happy until that age... tongue.gif

SANGTERAP, u have so many years experience growing bunnies, rite? Do u think we shud vaccin our bunnies? (Bcoz people vaccin their cats and dogs to avoid their pets from disease...)

MAGHUL, nice cage setup! Can let us see more photo of Lebit & Lebot's cage? Very interesting! Can i know what material u use for the upper floor (tingkat atas) and the staircase instead of box board? How u hang the upper floor and the hut? Nice job!

My Nino also loved to bath tongue.gif . I bathed him maximum twice a month, after sprayed him with flea-treatment medicine. I soaked him in a basin of warm water and apply some cat syampoo to remove the medicine on his body. Then, i rinsed him in another basin of warm water.

He was very quiet during bath session. After rinsing, i let him shake his body before towel-dried him. (Never had a chance to snap any of his photo during bathing. Like Bebee, i bathed Nino myself sad.gif Boyfren refused to help! vmad.gif mad.gif ) Nino loved to lick my face when i rubbed him with the towel wub.gif , then i blowed him dry with hair dryer. He hates the sound of hair dryer.. so i'll try to minimize the hair dryer usage. I use 2-3 towels to dry him well..

His photo after bathing wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif . Sori a bit blur... i snapped his photo using my handphone buruk.

Daddy got a new lump! Before this was at his right shoulder bone. The new one is at the joint of his right front leg, 2 inches from the first one. The first one is not fully recover. It becomes smaller, but very slow. I still have to pat him with warm bottle twice a day and apply an antibiotic ointment on it.

I noticed the new lump yesterday, while checking the first lump. I'm sure it wasnt there before this bcoz i aredi checked his whole body after i found the first lump :sigh: I check him almost everytime i pat the first lump.

Called my vet, will bring him today after work. Let the vet check and decide what to do. Pray for Daddy.

The feed intake is affected by few factors:

1) Blood glucose level
The rabbit will start eating when the blood glucose level is low.

2) The pallateble/ digestible of the feed
If the feed can be easily digested and absorbed, then the bunny will eat less. Because, most of the nutrient in the pellet can be absorbed and utilized. If the pellet contain a lot of undigestible nutrient, the the rabbit will eat more to fulfill the nutrient requirements.

3) The health of your bunny
Normally, healthy rabbit will eat. The rabbit will loss appetite when it is sick.

I suggest, you may mix few types of hay to feed to your bunny.

I found that, the oxbow pellet is quite heavy in mass. So, I suggest you no need to feed too much of pellet.

You may feed the bunny evening, then you observe next morning. If still have pellet in feed bowl, then you may reduce a bit the amount of pellet. Normally, my rabbit will finish the feed in the feed bowl by next morning.

Nico,

yours is a very tragic story la. I wonder why you encountering so much headaches with your rabbits. I hope your Daddy will be fine.

my only advice to everyone breeding is that, this is the exact thing that you have to consider when breeding. Will you be passing on this type of problem to future owners or not. see our friends here always have to bring Daddy in and out of vet. So much trouble.

A lesson for all of us: Pass on GOOD STUFF!!!
*
I also dunno la.. Nino (my bunny which died from emphysema disease) and Dinky are from the same breeder. And i dunno how their farm looks alike.

Daddy is a happy and health and notty bunny... No problem at all when i got him.. So it's not people's fault. The lumps are pus, so everytime must flush them out. Vet said it caused by scratches or cuts. But dunno how he got them. Like i told before, he is so energetic, always find away to escape by climbing or crawling from his playpen that attached to his cage. Now i'm keep monitoring him. I provide him healthy food, unlimited timothy and Oxbow pellet of course biggrin.gif. And like i always mention, he is a healthy rabbit. And i always proud to own him.
