Record close for KL Composite Index
PETALING JAYA: The KL Composite Index (KLCI) leapt to a new high yesterday, with sustained interest in newly-listed Sime Darby Bhd and a potential re-rating on blue chip laggard Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) providing the market with a major boost. The benchmark index was also bolstered by Telekom Malaysia Bhd's sharp gain to its highest level in almost three years. Top banking stocks Malayan Banking Bhd and Public Bank Bhd also contributed to the index rise. The 100-strong KLCI gained 22.36 points, or 1.6%, to 1,419.34 yesterday - its highest closing level ever. The index hit an intra-day record of 1,423.81 on Nov 1 this year. However, the broader market was in a sombre mood, with the lack of fresh leads to spur buying interest from retail investors. Rising stocks edged decliners 416 to 406 with 279 counters unchanged. Total market volume stood at 858 million shares valued at RM1.8bil. The FTSE Bursa Malaysia Small Cap Index, which tracks the performance of main board stocks outside the top 100 companies, slipped 0.04% to 11,788 points. "The focus is on quality counters, as investors are getting cautious about their outlook on equities with so many uncertainties around,'' a dealer at a local brokerage said. Sime Darby, the enlarged conglomerate listed last Friday, gained 50 sen to RM11.50. The group, which is the most valuable company on Bursa Malaysia, is a "must have" for portfolio managers tracking the performance of the KLCI. Rising stock prices - yesterday's gain added to the KLCI's six-day winning streak - also strengthened the ringgit by 0.2% to 3.355 yesterday against the US dollar. Meanwhile, shares in TNB received a boost yesterday on positive comments by the Second Finance Minister, and the perception that the utility firm was undervalued at current prices. Despite TNB's 45 sen advance yesterday to RM9.70, the stock remained 11% lower for the year. To compare, the KLCI had risen 29% over the past 11 months. According to Bloomberg's data, 90% of 30 analysts who tracked TNB rated the stock a "buy", with 20% to 30% upside potential from yesterday's closing price. TNB had also proposed to lift the 25% voting cap for foreign shareholders, and this could boost the stock's appeal in the longer run. Elsewhere, investors' sentiment remained fragile despite the country's economy growing at a faster rate than expected and strong quarterly earnings reported by local companies in the recently-concluded third-quarter results reporting season. The recent spike in share prices are also likely to attract some profit taking in the coming days. Elsewhere in the region, the equity markets were mixed yesterday with main barometers rising in Hong Kong, Australia, India, Singapore and Indonesia but were lower in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand. Crude oil price stayed below US$89 per barrel ahead of the US trading session yesterday. With crude oil on the retreat from near US$100 per barrel, traders expect price of crude palm oil (CPO) to fall in tandem. The benchmark CPO futures contract traded on Bursa Derivatives narrowed earlier sharp losses to close at RM2,926 per tonne, down RM4 yesterday. QUOTE(jasontoh @ Dec 4 2007, 09:55 AM) yes, that usually is expected when overall market sentiment is not that good with thin volume. They need a lot of volume to push their price up. If volume 1.5b-2b a day, they usually run up. These days is a far cry. Most investors are staying sideline. |

QUOTE(tsarena @ Dec 4 2007, 12:37 PM) Anyone know what happen to BOC-C1? BOC share price currently is 4.06. Exercise price is 4.18. convertion ratio 1:2. Expiry date 31/01/08/ so about 1 month plus to 'play' only. The price been dropping since last week.. DJI go up also this counter still dropping At Rm0.06, it mean HKD 0.14 so you cost = 0.14 + 4.18 = 4.32. It is still trading at premium. If mothershare is not moving much, BOC-C1 will be out of money. So only bet if you believe its share will go beyond HKD 4.32. I did use yahoo as my reference but i found it hard to check due to all the A, B and H share listing.Just go to Yahoo Finance then type the share full name in QUOTE search and then the list of names will pops out and choose the stock exchange. |

KLSE has very low volume lately. Up to now, today's volume only 0.6 Billion shares. Even with those HK CW actively traded, volume still so low. This is really a worrying sign. Really got no idea what is going on with our market.

Thanks pana, cherroy for the advices
Yeah i know the risk of this one... planning to FIFO (Fast In Fast Out) also. Not dumping alot $$ into this just see if possible TGIF. This wekeendthis simply speculation By the way as what cherroy observed last week, someone is playing the market. Before it end you will notice some stock being push up by one point by 1 lots only. seems like they want it to end up higher... look better on tomorrow , maybe? How does the given premium affects the CWs? Will the premium change daily? |

QUOTE(beginner @ Dec 5 2007, 01:02 AM) What it means is, they will be issuing new shares soon. The rights issue which is given or sold to their shareholders basically gives the person who hold the 'rights' to actually buy the new shares at a discounted price. From the statement, it says they are issuing 150 mil new shares. Thats about 100% increase in total shares. So just imagine the EPS is a cake, instead of 10 people sharing it, it will be 20 people sharing the same cake once the shares are issued. So thats why the price looks kind of attractive because people have already taken the new shares into account and aren't going to pay more for the counter because it wouldn't be worth it once the new shares hit the market. Thats what I meant by the market being efficient. This post has been edited by skiddtrader: Dec 5 2007, 01:17 AM |

Each online portal has its own rules, check respectively you can done the transaction in just second or seconds as long as the price is matched. |

for those who fancy HK CW
time to switch our attention from O&G counter to properties counter crude oil price keep dropping, you may put the PETROCH / SINOPEC / CNOOC / SHENHUA aside first recommending properties counter, eg CHEUNGK, HWL |

QUOTE(skiddtrader @ Dec 5 2007, 01:15 AM) What it means is, they will be issuing new shares soon. The rights issue which is given or sold to their shareholders basically gives the person who hold the 'rights' to actually buy the new shares at a discounted price. then actually, with new share issue, isnt it a lost for current shareholders? their current holding diluted by 50%...From the statement, it says they are issuing 150 mil new shares. Thats what I meant by the market being efficient. and how much need to pay for new subscription to right shares? |

Normally the company issuing new shares will try to entice the current shareholders and give them discount on buying the new shares. So maybe new shares will be priced at 50% or even 30% price of market value for the current shareholders. All depends on the agreed price in the statement of issue and differs from company to company. and how much need to pay for new subscription to right shares? What i see this will somehow fix the subprime issue a bit. QUOTE Subprime Rate Five-Year Fix Eyed by U.S. Regulators, Lenders By Alison Vekshin Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Federal regulators and U.S. lenders are focusing on five years as the duration of an interest-rate freeze on subprime mortgages, said a person familiar with negotiations aimed at stemming a surge in foreclosures. Such an agreement would satisfy the shortest fix sought by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. That period is longer than the minimum, two- to three-year modifications suggested by Fannie Mae, the largest source of finance for American home loans. The Treasury Department's Office of Thrift Supervision advocated between three and five years. ``Five years sounds about right,'' said Douglas Elmendorf, a former Treasury and Federal Reserve Board official, and now a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington. ``This is a useful and important step, but it isn't a panacea.'' Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is finalizing the accord as the housing recession enters its third year and threatens to undo the economic expansion. President George W. Bush and Paulson may announce the plan on Dec. 6, said two people familiar with negotiations. Officials and company executives have spent much of the past week negotiating over how long to extend starter rates on subprime mortgages, which are usually given to people with poor or incomplete credit histories. Almost 20 percent of subprime loans end in foreclosure, more than six times the number of prime mortgages, according research by the Fed's Boston branch. Republicans Meet Paulson Paulson will brief House Republicans tomorrow on details of the plan, Representative Adam Putnam of Florida, the chairman of the House Republican Conference, told reporters in Washington today. ``The Treasury is pleased with the progress that we heard from mortgage-industry participants,'' Treasury spokeswoman Jennifer Zuccarelli said. She reiterated Paulson's comment yesterday that he expected an agreement by the end of the week, while declining to comment on specifics. About 100,000 subprime loans will jump from their discounted initial rates every month for the next two years, UBS AG estimates. American home foreclosures almost doubled in October from a year earlier as subprime borrowers failed to make higher payments on adjustable-rate mortgages, Irvine, California-based RealtyTrac Inc. said on Nov. 29. Extending Starter Rates These mortgages usually begin with a rate of between 7 percent to 9 percent and then reset to between 11 percent and 13 percent. ``What we are talking about is having these loans modified, so they continue for a longer period of time at the starter rate,'' John Reich, director of the Office of Thrift Supervision, said in an interview in Washington yesterday. Paulson and Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke are concerned that falling home values will choke consumer spending, which has driven economic growth since the last recession ended in 2001. By heading off further deterioration in the $11.5 trillion mortgage market, officials are also aiming to stem losses on securities backed by subprime loans. The Bush administration's efforts to forge an agreement have become more urgent as the economy falters after a third- quarter spurt. Growth may cool to an annual rate of less than 1 percent in October to December, economists say, following an expansion of 4.9 percent in the prior three months. No `Silver Bullet' ``The number of subprime-mortgage resets is going to increase dramatically next year, and we need to make sure the capacity is there to handle it,'' Paulson said in a speech at a housing conference in Washington yesterday. While no ``silver bullet,'' rewriting a set of subprime loans would ``clearly'' ease the risks from the housing slump, he said in an interview later. Sheila Bair, chairman of the FDIC, has been working with Paulson and has said she favors extending introductory rates for between five and seven years. The OTS, which hosted yesterday's conference suggested a freeze of between three and five years. The cap on adjustable rates should last for at least two or three years, Fannie Mae Chief Executive Officer Daniel Mudd told reporters at the same event. ``That kind of number is what seems to make sense.'' Paulson identified four categories of subprime borrowers: those who can afford to pay adjustable-rate loans; those who don't have ``the financial wherewithal to sustain home ownership;'' those who choose to refinance their mortgages -- which he called ``the first, best option'' -- and those who can afford the introductory rate but not the adjusted one. The government is focused on helping the last category, he said. ``We are focusing on this group, determining who they are and what steps may appropriately assist them,'' he said. The plan ``does not, and will not, include spending taxpayer money on funding or subsidies for |

So maybe new shares will be priced at 50% or even 30% price of market value for the current shareholders. All depends on the agreed price in the statement of issue and differs from company to company. Whatever, rights issue generally is considered not so good for existing shareholders. It means you have to fork out extra money otherwise your holding in the company will be diluted. But yes, the current shareholders do tend to lose out in my opinion. Yes, sometimes, it is needed to fund the company expansion which might mean future profit will be improving and company grow bigger. But generally and personally not view it is a good news. It just means company run out of capital to fund their expansion or having high debt or cashflow problem. Normally highly profitable and well managed company don't issue rights issue, as they can fund their expansion through internal funding (cash or whatever liquid assets) or borrowing. I want my invested company to generate return for me, in the form of dividend and company profit. I don't want invest into some company then afterwards seek more money from me one. Anyway just my personal perference. As sometimes rights issue will do good to the company also for future expansion as mentioned earlier. |

But HSI-C2 should be more attractive cos its cheap and exercise at 30870 level... HSI-C3 still some way to go at 31xxx. However due to the complex calculation, I still not sure how to calculate HSI-C2 and C3 but I think its at negative. |

QUOTE(kapitan @ Dec 5 2007, 03:35 PM) Yalor... HSI-C3 is 31,888 <-- so easy to remember this figure. But HSI-C2 should be more attractive cos its cheap and exercise at 30870 level... HSI-C3 still some way to go at 31xxx. However due to the complex calculation, I still not sure how to calculate HSI-C2 and C3 but I think its at negative. Both are 'out of money', so worth nothing basically until HSI crosses their respective exercise price. Btw, KLCI is setting another new high today, I believe. But lot of people are making a loss at current market situation. It is almost identical to China market, index keep on set new high but respectively counters (small cap) are dropping more than 30%. QUOTE(c0c0nut @ Dec 5 2007, 03:39 PM) QUOTE(dEviLs @ Dec 5 2007, 03:38 PM) maybe you can consider that BURSA is dropping from 16.xx to 13.xx these day (thanks to the black november) so basically BURSA still not yet fully rebound, you may consider pick the CF as mothershare move, cw will follow, too |

(forgot spelling) will get listed on that day ? Will europe/US cw surge that day ? It depends, as those CW are issued at a high premium, it depends on the market conditon on that time as well as market makers and syndicate willingness to 'push'. Yes, no doubt if Exxon or Apple mothershares surge which definitely will mean higher open for the CW so better watch carefully about the mothershare condition. If mothershare doesn't change much in this period then it all depends on willingness to 'goreng' as mentioned.Exxon mothershare price is highly related to crude oil price while Apple share price is highly related to technology sector issue. US and Europe market are more mature, individual share won't rise purely on overall market sentiment like here, their share price is highly related to their individual fundamental. Market already anticipated a 0.25% rate cut, that's why DJ had risen more than 500 points im just few days. This post has been edited by cherroy: Dec 5 2007, 04:01 PM |

The increase is very wide spread... Although counters like KNM, LCL, BURSA, SIME, push KLCI up a lot, but still smaller one also got increase. Anyway, I think I will take a rest... too high liao... |

QUOTE(tsarena @ Dec 5 2007, 05:25 PM) Is there any important announcement apart frm OPEC meeting tonight causing asia to rally in afternoon session? People bet on high hope of rate cut next week by Fed. Some even predict another 0.5%. The market is 'rate cut' addicted currently, got rate cut hope, market shoot up, then economy or housing and financial problem still persist, market tumble again, then when Fed meeting near, hope another rate cut, cycle repeat itself since the surprise 0.5% cut in Sept. or tonight will just be technical rebound? The employment data on this Friday in US might hold the crucial clue how Fed will do next week. OPEC meeting has nothing to do with the market directly except for the crude oil movement. Another thing is US regulator works with lenders to work out to 'freeze' the subprime interest rate resetting issue to avoid foreclosure which somehow become alarming. This is also a half tank issue, half empty or half full. Doesn't necessary 100% positive side. Forget another thing, year end is coming, might see some window dressing activities as well especially those being battered hard one. Financial stock in US? QUOTE(robertngo @ Dec 5 2007, 06:09 PM) the last rate cut still not show any sign of improvement, so fast want to cut again? later if inflation increase hard to cool down. Fed is depress now. Even they cut rate, interbank (LIBOR) rate is staying high (LIBOR is the place or interest rate for banks lend to each others).By right, rate cut need at least 6 months to work into the system, but financial situation and housing problem worsen which make Fed a little depresse and opt to 'pre-emptied' the downside risk of the economy. There is huge debate whether Fed is doing the right thing or not. Most (99%) of market people welcome the rate cut, mean equities market shoot up, surely good for them |

QUOTE(panasonic88 @ Dec 5 2007, 06:51 PM) STOCK MARKET WINDOW DRESSING: THE ART OF LOOKING SMART! As investors, and we all are investors these days, it is important that we understand the idiosyncrasies of the Stock Market pricing data we use to help us in our decision making efforts. On Wall Street, investing can be a minefield for those who don't take the time to appreciate why securities prices are at the levels that appear on quarterly account statements. At least four times per year, security prices are more a function of institutional marketing practices than they are a reflection of the economic forces that we would like to think are their primary determining factors. Not even close... Around the end of every calendar quarter, we hear the financial media matter-of-factly report that Institutional Window Dressing Activities" are in full swing. But that is as far, and as deep, as it ever goes. What are they talking about, and just what does it mean to you as an investor? There are at least three forms of Window Dressing, none of which should make you particularly happy and all of which should make you question the integrity of organizations that either authorize, implement, or condone their use. The better-known variety involves the culling from portfolios of stocks with significant losses and replacing them with shares of companies whose shares have been the most popular during recent months. Not only does this practice make the managers look smarter on reports sent to major clients, it also makes Mutual Fund performance numbers appear significantly more attractive to prospective "fund switchers". On the sell side of the ledger, prices of the weakest performing stocks are pushed down even further. Obviously, all fund managements will take part in the ritual if they choose to survive. This form of window dressing is, by most definitions, neither investing nor speculating. But no one seems to care about the ethics, the legality, or the fact that this "Buy High, Sell Low" picture is being painted with your Mutual Fund palette. A more subtle form of Window Dressing takes place throughout the calendar quarter, but is "unwound" before the portfolio's Quarterly Reports reach the glossies. In this less prevalent (but even more fraudulent) variety, the managers invest in securities that are clearly out of sync with the fund's published investment policy during a period when their particular specialty has fallen from grace with the gurus. For example, adding commodity ETFs, or popular emerging country issues to a Large Cap Value Fund, etc. Profits are taken before the Quarter Ends so that the fund's holdings report remains uncompromised, but with enhanced quarterly results. A third form of Window Dressing is referred to as "survivorship", but it impacts Mutual Fund investors alone while the others undermine the information used by (and the market performance of) individual security investors. You may want to research it. window dressing usually occur 2- 3wks before English New Year, but I have to go to Tokyo for personal matters, won't be able to witness the exciting moments. |

IMO, since I also bought IOICORP, I think if one really calculate, I think it already exceed the 32x PE when the price is at 7.50 and above.. hence it drop to 7.10-7.30 which didnt hold out for long. I sold mine long ago after realising its too damn bloated.
In HK, you probably get shares (mainly China related shares) that are trading beyond 40x PE and yet they still prosper. But then again, with China trying to cool the economy and reduce the trade deficit, who knows what might happened. Just a matter of fact, my company usually bought around RM20~30M steel materials from China yearly but this year has been reduced not in amount but quantity. China has already taken a drastic step to cool its export by cutting off rebates and imposing export tax to curb them from exporting too much. Products from China (using steel as reference) has increase almost 30% (used to enjoy 7% rebate, but now thats taken off, and slapped with a 15% export tax which will be increased to 20% early next year). Shares like Sinopec, Cheung Kong, CNOOC, PetroChina (surprise, surprise, but it has since drop to a more realistic ~20x PE level) are few of the decent of trading off 20x PE. Shares like ICBC, Shen Hua, ChMoly (China Molybdenum), China Mobile, and China Life are trading with a PE exceeding 40x. Of course China has a big market and its impossible to have a forecast for their future expansion but with China intervention to cool down its economy, I think its wise to practice precaution when buying HKCW. Added on December 5, 2007, 11:59 pm QUOTE(beginner @ Dec 5 2007, 11:51 PM) pana is watching over you and everyone of us here... becareful. I think will be quite stable till Chrismas.very long time no see continuous green so many days dee, hope this rally continue till chinese new year. Next year will be hard to say cos as subprime figures will be released along with rates cut again, who knows what might happen. This post has been edited by kapitan: Dec 5 2007, 11:59 PM |

I think this afternoon's market would be better because many investors become more confident & participate.

Hello there...I'm very new to the market and I'm still finding my feet. How do you earn almost 3K? What's the price you sold the warrant? 300 lots = 300 * 100, right? So 30,000 @ 0.015 = RM 450? Still can't understand how 450 bucks can earn you 3k? Can anyone brief me? I'm now holding PetroCh-C5. Trying to understand the whole warrant "tactic". So I can maximise my returns... |

QUOTE(Ya Rerd @ Dec 6 2007, 11:04 AM) Hello there... I reckon he is talking about 300 lots of old old system (300 x 1000), as most old timers in the market still treat 1 lot= 1000.How do you earn almost 3K? Actually I am a little surpise the HSI only rise about 300+ points after DJ surge nearly 200 points. I initially thought HSI will open up at least 700+ point to test the 30K mark. Locally, besides the index and index linked, others so so only, not much exciting, volume though improves a bit compared to last few week, still market is queit throughout. But Sapcres does have very good bounce for the last few days. Time to defroze for those keep in the fridge and put in 'goreng' pan ? This post has been edited by cherroy: Dec 6 2007, 11:31 AM |

QUOTE(jasontoh @ Dec 6 2007, 11:41 AM) well, in stock market , nothing is impossible. I will stick to my plan because this company's earnings will be reflected from 2008 onwards. Too many times, I sold my good stocks too early (hit & run) & earned lesser than stocks(good potential stock) that I held. But if you think you have earned enough, why not sell? Today I bought HSI-C1...
Seem like whenever I buy this one it will curse it... Bought @ 1.28, even till now still got negative premium yet no movement... even when HSI approach 30K it gives little away... I think investor are more interested in the smaller sized HSI C2 n C3. Added on December 6, 2007, 4:41 pm QUOTE(cherroy @ Dec 6 2007, 04:35 PM) Out of money, going to expire this month. QUOTE(kapitan @ Dec 6 2007, 04:44 PM) Its ok... calculated... C1 has the shorter lifespan, expire 29 Feb 2008, while C2 and C3 has longer lifespan expire at May and June respectively. So theorectical, C2 and C3 has more 'value' in it.Based on HSI closing, its worth 1.25 at least... Its like that... when C2 and C3 hot, C1 will be abandon... But I like it... cos at least got value... Yup, sometimes people will choose the 'cheaper' price one for entry level. People will have the mentality (not necessary correct, just people tend to have that view), C1 is Rm1.20 while C2 and C3 is 0.1x and 0.2x. People will choose the C2 and C3. They think from 0.2 to 0.3 they can gain 50%, it is similar to the HSBC-C1 case, from 0.015 to 0.025, you already can gain more than 50%. By right, all are the same if the CW gearing is the same. By right at negative premium, C1 is more worth to play but still people will go after the 'cheaper' one although it is not really 'cheap'. In term of value, C1 is actually the cheaper alternative. Btw, I wonder why IOI shoot up, CPO price is plugning quite heavily, drop more than 50-60 across various months. This post has been edited by cherroy: Dec 6 2007, 05:23 PM |

If mothershare doesn't rise or rise enough to make it possible to be 'in money' then its CW won't go anywhere either. So better monitor the movement of HSBC mothershare to judge the HSBC-C1. Just my 2 cents. |

Mahsing have many unbilled sales and disposals, you can try to get it but it wont be a fast one, I got it at 1.68. No time to monitor, so just let it be. |
