I have done releasing of hermit crabs a few times already.
I am always happy seeing them joining to the colony in their natural habitat.

And Why do I do it at night, although it is dangerous for me?
It is because if I release them during the day, they would be exposed to heat and sunlight, and may die from it, if they unable to to find a hiding spot and no other hermit crabs within range. Further more hermit crabs are most active at night.

i choose not to disclose the beach location due to it may endanger the hermit crab population there. Pls understand.

You can release it in the mid morning from 9am to 11am. Best place to release them is under a shady tree or large rock spots, within minutes they will start wandering around for cool spot for burrow.

if you have a marine aquarium, with some clown fish, cleaner wrasse and damsel fish. Marine hermit crab will be a good tank mate that crawl the bottom of the tank picking up leftover food and particles.

Marine hermit crabs are not as messy as keeping land hermit crabs. Marine hermit crab are also less choosy on it diet, it eats dead fish and sinking fish food in flakes or pellets or even sea algae.

You just need to control & maintain the water parameters & salinity and frequent water changes necessary weekly or bi-weekly at 10% to 25% of a full tank of sea water.

In this case you need to have ready mixed sea water, prior to the water change.

I have posted a video and pictures about marine hermit crabs in previous postings you can have a look.

As to the lifespan to marine hermit crab, it is still unknown to me. Anyone knows are welcome to post here.

Haha, thats the winning advantage tongue.gif

Adding to your explanation above, marine hermit crab have variable life span in captivity. It ranged from 5 years to 45 years just like the land hermit crab. What pressure them is the water ph level and temperature. True marine hermit crab is easy to keep since it only requires 35% of land and the rest is water so most of their waste will be in water than on the sand.

Go ahead and ask. I guess alot of old members have stopped coming in here. For me, I stopped keeping hermits coz I decided to concentrate on other pets. But do have a crab. A Mangrove crab which I find easier to keep. But I can still remember about hermit crabs.

Not only dry as we do have raining season too so it will be cold at night. Its best to have a dry and wet column for them to shift around to their needs.
then juz put a small delicup to let them drink.
They dont only drink the water, they do take dips to keep their inner shell moist for breathing. Being too try will kill them naturally. Best is a dish of sea salt and fresh water, deep enough to submerge the largest crab in your tank. If you have any micro to small crabs with the big ones, put bedding in the dish.
feed them with rice , bread , fruits will do.
Personally i have not try rice but hermit crab generally eat anything, raw.

Hope this put a clearer direction to new hermit crab keepers biggrin.gif

Can we use coral sand for the crabitat? It's the sand commonly used for marine aquariums.

hi...yes u can....u can even separate it into 2 areas...one with coconut fiber, the other with the sand....i prefer fine sand because it can be the comfortable mediu mfor the hermit to dig into it :smile.gif
