Heres a new found.

Rumors says that WMP somehow modifies the memory allocation of WOW?

I do notice a small difference. I dunno whether its just another placebo effect.

Only works on older machines. If you have C2D and above there's not much point in doing that.

on my machine... lol

but i am a lil interested in the lower latency part, but i doubt it'll work as its probably due to older/weaker machines having more resources freed/properly allocated and resulting in less hardware bottlenecking (especially the NICs) thus resulting lower latency. (eg: low ass FPS usually results higher latency, especially if ur proc's always on load/occupied)

as many people commented on that, its probably the audio libraries loaded so WoW dont have to bother with it. still a lot of guessworks atm though

=edit=
good finding nonetheless and would probably help a lot of people that runs on weaker machines

On some machines I would say YES.

I've used to run Counter-Strike competition/tournament.

There's one thing I usually do on Server PC, I on Windows Media Player. It will lower the latency of all clients.
Normally when on server without WMP, clients latency is around 13-15, after on WMP it drop to 3-5.

Newer PC I think doesn't face this problem, During World Gamemaster Tournament WMP is not needed, Latency is already low as 3-5. Last weekend CS tournament at DNA Internet Centre which use AMD, I need to on WMP to bring down the clients latency.

Theory behind this? I'm just too lazy to find out.

open WMP would up a system from 100 refresh per second(windows's default) to 1000 refresh per second. some hardware only capable to 500 refresh, not due to speed, but due to its design.

I have a dual screen set up at home, so it is not uncommon for me to be watching a DVD or some other movie/series on my secondary monitor while playing WoW on my primary. As most people know, unless you're PvPing, you can pretty much go on auto-cruise for farming.

I honestly can't say that I've noticed much of a difference with/without media player running so I guess what others have said in this thread is true, it mainly affects older system. /shrug

Ive been listening to mp3 while playing WoW since the first week i began playing, because im not to fond of listening to the WoW own BGM. When i found out about this a month back when i troll WoW EU forums there are no different on my WoW performance ( note that my machine is abit old ) so turn off my music player and my WoW performance drop down to death, i even lag out due to fps restrain in shattrah... this little wonder that ive been using for around 2 years and never found out... i lol'd a little inside.

BTW most music player works, im using jetaudio and ive tested it even with iTunes, but not winamp thou coz i hate winamp lol.
