this preauthorization was more "transparent" before pin&pay initiative. mostly ppl uses cc to pump.when p&p started, we all were forced to debit card whereby it's more obvious whereby the pre-auth amount seemed to be deducted from DC/account.
if you browse each bank's website about Pin&Pay, there is literature explaining this behavior. it's more of education and public awareness.
