Just disengage it. It's all about getting used to it.

If you still need to use the dampener when you're playing on the first fret... You really suck...

no, i mean when u using the dampener n doing a solo, the solo runs from 1st fret to .... say 15 fret, then u gotta disengage while solo-ing?

my guitar teacher say it's the best to practice to mute using palm thou. still practicing......

You can still do it...
It's like you slide your finger under the dampener to fret the first fret...
And if done properly, you won't disengage the dampener...

Of course the best way is to practice everything with proper muting techniques...

Having a dampener on a guitar is like broadcasting to the world that "Hey! Look at me! I can't mute properly so I need a dampener to help me out!"...

Unless of course your last name is Batio or Batten etc...

Hehe, actually Rossie doesn't want to scare us. it's not really a string dampener but a force field dampener that protects the surrounding area from the effects of 4 billion nps shredding. That way Rossie can kick @ss without worrying about the Sun exploding or his fans just dropping dead. It's pretty amazing.

7 String owners rejoice however. I tried out a J&D Brother's 7 String in Chambers in Sungai Wang. Pretty decent enough. SSH config, 24 frets, Licensed FR, But a bit on the light side. Price? RM1200........

If not for my Egen, MIGHT have gotten this and modify it with Evo7 pickups.
