Anyone hv used this rebate b4? Can get RM500 rebate off if you go for full medical checkup

From Public Ruling 2/2005. Pg 14 Computation of Income Tax Payable by a Resident Individual (pdf)

QUOTE
6.1.7 Complete medical examination expenses - para. 46(1)(h) ITA
Total deduction: up to a maximum of RM500 and forms a part of the deduction of RM5,000 under paragraph 46(1)(g) ITA.
Details:
i. The individual must have incurred expenses for complete medical examination on himself/herself, spouse or child;
ii. “Complete medical examination” for the purposes of the deduction under this paragraph would mean full medical checkup as defined by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
iii. Where the expenses for complete medical examination up to a maximum of RM500 is already claimed, the deduction for medical expenses for serious diseases which can be claimed by the individual is limited to an amount of RM4,500.

(ITA==Income Tax Act)

I called IRB today and she confirmed can be done, thou the normal Pathlab/Gribbles lab tests cannot la.. onli 'full medical checkup' is claimable for tax rebate.

However, the fees for a full medical checkup is quite high thou..I called Pantai Medical Centre some months back, it costs like above 500.. if anyone has any comments on full medical checkups.. do lemme know too. Thanks!

Damn, that's vague. Do they really expect everyone to go check with the MMC with regards to the specific tests that comprise a full checkup...
some ppl i know, they went for those pathlab/bp checks and submitted a claim..

I really doubt that LHDN wanna gonna chase for RM500 deduction, as effectively it will be say at 20%, RM 100 extra tax...

But again you'll newer know, based on my last briefing with LHDN ist like the normal medical screening that company send, which, yes normally cost more than RM1000.

Its not actually a 'rebate' but a 'deduction'.

Rebate is after computing the tax payable, deduction reduce the chargable income.

If they are audited then the claim will be reversed also have to pay penalty for false claims.

Thanks for the replies and feedback.. i always misuse the term deduction and rebate.. tongue.gif

1. yes, this can potentially 'back fire' if the medical check is not valid for deduction per LHDN's definition of medical check.

2. In any case, I will call first and try to determine if the medical check is considered 'full' medical check per MMC definition. I called up PMC Pantai, the answer was that their medical checkup is tax deductible but PMC Cheras has no clue.. of coz, the pricing for PMC Pantai is actualli more than than PMC Cheras.

3. If anyone's curious, Tung Shin's medical checkup seems to be the cheapest among hospitals in KL. Less than 700 for the one including lung test and stress test (treadmill). But I'll go verify if their's is 'full' *and* oso tax deductible.

If you go to private hospital like in pantai or SDMC for medical check up, yah the fees is more than RM500. But then again after considering the RM500 tax deduction, the check up cost is not that much. Good to go for medical check up especially women.

FYI, medical check up at SDMC at Subang Jaya more expensive than SDMC at Taman Megah, so go to Taman Megah for medical check up.

Also the cost for the medical check up depends on what test you select, but to be kiasu for older people like me, better check all necessary.
