Honestly do these drivers even realized that you  CAN  switch to N anytime while driving?

Not for new cars these days as the shifter is just a mode switch not physically connected to the gearbox.

Older cars or modern cars with outdated tech has physical cables connected to the gearbox and able to do as u suggested.

Only if you are using traditional shifter. X50 using electronic shifter its very hard to enter N as the knob always returns to centre

For real? You tried?

I remembered I tried once with a Mercedes E300 W212. My dad passed me the car and for once I forgotten the blinkers on the other side and I pushed it. It engaged neutral and I waited until the speed drop down to 30kmh (from 60kmh) before engaging D again. Before this I did it once on an older Merc (big small eyes, not sure electronic shifter or not), traffic light was red and Im used to engage N and roll to a stand still on my vios. Suddenly it turned green and I shift to D. It starting to shift from 1st to my horrow (although I was not fast, maybe 40-50kmh). Hence this experience made me wait for it to slow down before engaging D again on the W212.

Yes la.

My Naza Ria still used physical cable to the gearbox but my Exora CFE don't. Heck, my backup Savvy AMT also don't.

So, those newer cars will need to use the handbrake or bang into a divider to completely stop.

Then again, modern cars don't use cable handbrake anymore. All electronic switches.

but even if it was really user problem, i think car manufacturers need to step up their game to design "idiot-proof" vehicles. Err on the side of safety.
