Then again, theatre folks can be more elitist than you imagine. Cynthia Erivo is not new to the West End. Great voice. I think back then she took on traditionally black women roles. Not sure if she can pull off dracula though lol.
Edit: Nick Jonas also tried to be Marius in Les Mis, dude was nearly eaten alive by the others. It is one thing to expand your roles and not be typecast, but it doesn't mean that guys like Rowan Atkinson can become the Itallan Stallion after putting on some boxing gloves.
That's the thing about theater though, the reason it's ripe for experimentation is it's fine if they don't make money since it costs far far less than making a movie.
