Lol at the people at this thread thinking this is gonna tank. It's an adaptation being made by a Tony-nominated Writer & Director, starring a Tony winning Actress.

Though why are Hollywood fans are furious? It's not like they're gonna go to West End to see her perform....

even for west end, this is a bit too far out la, lol

black female dracula with a nose ring?

Why tho? West End is a place for experimentation, and a public domain work like Dracula is ripe target.

That said, there was already a "Countess Dracula" stage adaptation: https://www.warnertheatre.org/fierce-female-dracula/

Not to mention the various comedic or musical stage adaptations that is pretty much anything goes. Or those that had on-stage simulated sex acts and stuff. Nothing is too far out for theatre.

It starts at West End then continues to bleed into movies

It bleeds out if its successful. If you guys are saying it tanks at West End, then nobody at movies will pick it up. If its successful, just like Wicked, then it'll be adapted.

How many failed stage plays you know still got adapted into movies?

Sure, why not. Theatre guys are more open to this stuff.

But practically, things are taken one step at a time. Just because the performers are comfortable with it, it does not mean that audiences will flock to see it.

Then again, theatre folks can be more elitist than you imagine. Cynthia Erivo is not new to the West End. Great voice. I think back then she took on traditionally black women roles. Not sure if she can pull off dracula though lol.

Edit: Nick Jonas also tried to be Marius in Les Mis, dude was nearly eaten alive by the others. It is one thing to expand your roles and not be typecast, but it doesn't mean that guys like Rowan Atkinson can become the Itallan Stallion after putting on some boxing gloves.

That's the thing about theater though, the reason it's ripe for experimentation is it's fine if they don't make money since it costs far far less than making a movie. It's after all just a 6-day a week show running for 4 months. It is just another show at West-End.
