Currently I am on Time Fiber 200mbps paying RM99 per month.

However, the speed/stability in the farther rooms are not that great due to walls/distance (but still stable and useable). Even my PC, is using WiFi connected and there is no fiber connection to any device.

I see Umobile has 5G broadband at RM68. Seems like I can save quite a bit a month and have the flexibility to place the router in a more central location which should offer better speeds.

But is 5G broadband stable enough? At the moment, Time Fiber broadband has never failed me for nearly 5 years, WFH is also smooth. Can I expect the same from 5G Broadband?

5G broadband can handle work from home activities just fine if you have a strong signal. However, if your 5G connection drops or experiences congestions due to many people connected to the same tower, it will be your worst nightmare for video calls and upload/download. You can buy a prepaid sim, subscribe internet and test it according to your use case. Also, 5G definitely cannot beat fibre in terms of latency if you play games.

Your best bet is to continue using Time fibre and invest in good mesh system for your home.

True, never use stock router from the provider, in my case i ask the provider technician to install and configure my own router which is better, even the provider technician told me the stock router by them not so good, just average 😉

Pls do not go from wired to wireless.

Indeed, spend some $ for better router like mid spec ASUS ( rm300+ and above ) and you will be fine

What difference will buying a different router make? My main issue is that my master bedroom singal is poor, I just assumed it is due to multiple walls / distance.

it is better you add another AP with LAN cable.. It is normal for high rise apartment to have lower reception of wifi because neighbour wifi also using same channel and thick wall of course.

The problem is with your Wi-fi router not being able to cover your whole house or penetrate walls, not with the Time fibre connection itself. If you use umobile 5G and it has a similar wifi performance, it will be the same.

Yes, that's why router can range from RM100 to more than RM2000. If there's no difference in signal strength, everyone would have bought the cheapest.

How big is your house in terms of square feet and do you have a layout image?

For reference, my old house was 750 sqft and a TP-Link AX20 router (rather old model) was able to cover the whole house even though it was placed near the edge of the house (a bit slow at the furthest room). Stock Unifi router back then couldn't reach the furthest room.

Now I moved to a larger unit with around 1200 sqft, I use a pair of mesh routers to cover the whole house (Main router in living room, 2nd unit in my master bedroom connected to the main via wireless backhaul).

It's a bit disappointing to see that our telco is slow in educating consumers. They give out the same router to everyone, regardless of individual needs or setups. In fact, it's a missed opportunity,they could offer better routers at their service centers. It's a waste to see people sign up for 300-800 Mbps plans but not fully utilize the speed due to router limitations.

5Ghz signal penetrate only things like cardboard.

2.4Ghz signal penetrate like 10mm plywood only.

Expecting 2.4 and 5ghz signal to pass thru brick walls, or worst still Reinforced concrete load bearing with thick iron rods... Yes 2.4... can little bit...but don't expect good speed.


Even over the air television signal, took them like 50 years to digitised and improve the quality. Those are 470mhz to 722mhz. Can penetrate buildings and mountains but the speed is way slower. So unlikely to have 4k livestream OTA.

Anyhow, pull ethernet cable from router to your master bed and put one AP. Definitely worth it.

I have switch from Time to Yes 5G using CP502 since May. I WFH 71% of the time and I have only encountered around 7 interruptions a few mins disconnection. I have never encountered any slowness. My speedtest is always around 300-400mbps down and about 60-110mbps up.

I have line of sight to the tower and distance about 1.5KM away.

This switch save me about 41 ringgit every month.

the bestest 5G modem for MTK 7981 chipset with T750 baseband chip. tested any data sim can work with this modem.

yes+no, mine is oem, not using suncomm, but this using same casing and possibly the same main board, but suncomm branding it as theirs. mine is using MTK for baseband, suncomm using SD. so big difference there. also the RAM and Flash also different.

forget about 5G broadband, 5G in bolehland, no only coverage is still weak, but also the speed, latency all sucks...
