i still remember those long queues outside the apple store in japan — back then, the msrp there was cheaper than in china. this time, china’s msrp is a bit lower, but buying in japan is still worth it since tourists get a 10% tax rebate. that works out to around 50 dollars, or about 350 yuan in savings.

Save $50 for a phone that cannot silent the shutter sound? Nahhh

i bought ip11 there back in 2019, and after an ios update here the shutter sound went away.

True. I think india poses higher risks for foreign companies too... given their inconsistent regulatory practices, unreasonable scrutiny, bureaucratic hurdles, hefty fines... I have heard stories from my dealings with business managers and owners.

I was thinking it might just be better for apple to assemble their products in Vietnam or Malaysia. Some will say its due to costs reasons but I believe the culture, stability and proximity to China will outweigh that marginal cost increase.

Msia aldy making some products such as HomePod and Mac Minis, other more sophisticated ones such as iPhone is nowhere to be seen, infra wise we are not bad, but suffer from lack of skilled workers and need investment in the industrial automation pipelines

Vietnam ady making products like Airpods, iPads, but Vietnam suffers some electricity and poor logistics issues

yes, actually malaysia or vietnam are better option for apple assembly. I think tim cook also knows that, but India has its advantages, which tim sees this as a move to secure the india market which has 1.45b people.

if india is able to reach 50% of china's current gdp within 5-8 years, then its a win already for apple.
