China's Retail Sales Exceed Expectations Despite Trade War and Economic Challenges

• China's retail sales in May surged to 6.4% year-on-year growth, surpassing the projected 4.9% and significantly improving upon April's 5.1% increase, offering a positive outlook for the nation's economy amidst ongoing trade tensions with the US.

• This growth, however, contrasts with a weaker-than-expected 5.8% increase in industrial production, highlighting a disparity in economic sectors and suggesting that consumer spending is a more resilient aspect of the Chinese economy.

• Despite the positive retail sales figures, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) acknowledges persistent economic challenges, including a slump in domestic consumption, a property sector debt crisis, and falling commercial property prices, indicating continued consumer caution.

• While China aims for approximately 5% economic growth this year, the ongoing trade war with the US remains a significant factor, with recent talks between trade delegations yielding positive communication but no concrete lasting agreement, leaving the overall economic outlook uncertain.

inflation/deflation = prices.
consumption = total spend (price x transaction no)

In essence Chinese consumers spend more to buy more goods at same or lower prices. That's why consumption can go up in deflationary situation.

THey can buy all their cheap stuff online but domestic consumption slump means public and/or private sector not consuming. Meaning no increase in raw material purchase and capital expenditure by industry. No new trucks being added for freight folks, no new machines for factories

Household consumption can only carry so much

They will still flood here for their survival

Looks like they're lowering production, most likely will compensate by increasing prices. This is a great strategy for them.

China already said during their recent 2-Sessions Conference, that they were gonna increase domestic consumption.
Somemore USA everyday complain that China keeps exporting their over-production and destroy everyone else's local production, so Xi give Trump some face lo.

China GDP was USD 2 trillion in 2005, USD 11.3 trillion in 2015 and USD 18.2 trillion.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/263770/...t-gdp-of-china/

Should be collapsing past USD 20 trillion soon.
