Silicon Power?
Avoid this brand lower end like a plague.

Famous for bait and switch on NAND + controller.

Bought two SiliconPower A55 SSDs and out of nowhere drives can't be powered on and taking all the data with it within 1 and 2 years respectively.

did you claim the 3year warranty?
what mean "bait and switch on NAND + controller."?

mapren also had 3 SP drives fail within 1-2years of daily use. but he also had another SP drive which still in-use after 4years+.

About 2 months ago I noticed that the SMART status for the hdd was 'warning' on speccy, apparently there were 28 reallocated sectors, next day it went up to 29, then for 20++ days it was fine, no increase, then it went up a bit, and two days ago it was completely toast, windows ran like crap, I could not type anything without causing the computer to freeze up, disk activity pegged at 100%, tried to clone the C partition, DiskGenius said it'd take 333 hours ohmy.gif

The internet seems to be divided over this; some say a few reallocated sectors are fine, some say it's sure sign that your hdd is about to be completely effed.

Moral of the story, check your SMART status, pay attention to critical parameters, backup your data. Sekian.

Change to SSD/NVME for boot disc. HDD is for backup only these days.

quite old, from 2018; but I've had a maxtor that lasted longer than that, actually it was still working when the mobo crapped out, and it was a maxtor.

My laptop from 2016 has bad sectors but SMART still says OK and the Seatools Self-Test says Passed. On the other hand, from my experience with WD external HDD, SMART might say OK but if the Self-Test says Failed then it's only a matter of time before it bricks. Sometimes it passes the test but a few weeks later bricked. So I bought 2 Seagate external HDD instead. Fingers crossed, hopefully they don't brick. So far I haven't had any desktop HDD bricked. A few bad sectors maybe.
