About 2 months ago I noticed that the SMART status for the hdd was 'warning' on speccy, apparently there were 28 reallocated sectors, next day it went up to 29, then for 20++ days it was fine, no increase, then it went up a bit, and two days ago it was completely toast, windows ran like crap, I could not type anything without causing the computer to freeze up, disk activity pegged at 100%, tried to clone the C partition, DiskGenius said it'd take 333 hours ohmy.gif

The internet seems to be divided over this; some say a few reallocated sectors are fine, some say it's sure sign that your hdd is about to be completely effed.

Moral of the story, check your SMART status, pay attention to critical parameters, backup your data. Sekian.

Thanks for reminding me to check my s.m.a.r.t status. I learned years ago, as soon as it's sluggish to access a disk, and/or starts reallocating sectors. It's time to find a replacement. Also robocopy is your friend if you're on windows, rsync on linux, to copy stuff to the new disk.

Time to make a disk copy of that failling HDD.

To perform disk copy you will need new same size HDD or SSD.

quite old, from 2018; but I've had a maxtor that lasted longer than that, actually it was still working when the mobo crapped out, and it was a maxtor.

I imaged the c partition after I first saw the reallocated sector.

No need lor, as long as the data in the original disk is less than the capacity of the new one, you can clone, I use DiskGenius to do that. Cloning programs that come with ssds tend to be more restrictive.

used to claim faulty NASx 2 units before… sent to supplier with the necessary documents… they returned similar NAS but with sticker showing replacement ( or to that effect)… but both didn’t last too long.. died within 2 years… the other 2 still running after 5 years..
lesson, even if it’s an exchanged unit, always backup

I have an old wd black, using that in the mean time, already installed an ssd for the boot drive. I'm a bit wary of ordering 3.5" hdd online though, malaysian sellers don't pack them correctly; bubble wrap is not acceptable for hdd, esp desktop hdd.

Silicon Power?
Avoid this brand lower end like a plague.

Famous for bait and switch on NAND + controller.

Bought two SiliconPower A55 SSDs and out of nowhere drives can't be powered on and taking all the data with it within 1 and 2 years respectively.
