i read up on the history of south africa a while back and it's kinda understandable why the native africans are historically unhappy. its like a worse version of the colonialism in malaya - basically two colonial powers (the brits and the dutch) were competing on who can take more land and mines before the other does and africans became the victim.

so not only did the colonial governments (both the british cape government and boer republics) essentially waged war on african kingdoms (and then each other) and parcelled out thousands of acres each to individual whites, they also legislated laws that kept africans only to labour work with zero chance of education. so not only did some africans were robbed of their land and then forced to work on their own farms as low-paid labourers, new immigrants (like gandhi) who are educated became a higher class citizen than them.

so the anger is a bit understandable.

that being said, there's a proper way of doing things. you make sure the people who you want to take over know what theyre doing, instead of just being cronies. the way south africa did it combines the worst of populism and socialist land redistribution.
