Traffic jams and road congestion have become a common sight outside many schools in Malaysia, with endless rows of cars lining up during pick up hours.

Frustrated by the traffic jam, one Malaysian took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent, questioning why schoolchildren couldn’t simply take the bus or even walk home instead.

“Don’t your kids know how to walk home, take public transport, or the school bus?

“If it’s one kid per car being picked up, of course it’s going to cause a traffic jam all the way to the highway.”

Naturally this post went viral, sparking a debate in the comment section.

Many parents defended the practise, citing safety concerns and rising school bus fares.

“If they walk home, then if there’s a case of kidnapping or an accident, people will blame the parents. If they take the school bus, the drivers might be predators. If they use Grab, people question how the kid even has a phone. Let the parents deal with the congestion to pick up their kids — as long as their safety is ensured,” commented @13TheUntamed.

“It’s not like the old days anymore, where kids could just walk around on their own. These days, there are too many crazy people out there. Even school buses cost RM100 per child. I’ve got two kids — that’s already RM200. Add on RM160 for pocket money, that’s RM360 gone. So I send them in the morning before work, that’s already sorted. In the afternoon, they hitch a ride with their aunty. When I’m done with work, I pick them up,” shared @phyrdawoosh.

Meanwhile some took to the comment section to vent about how they would be stuck in traffic jams because of parents who double park or park by the side of the road to pick up their kids after school.

“I swear! Yesterday I was stuck for half an hour just trying to get home because the road was jam-packed with parents picking up their kids from school. The worst part? The school already provided a proper pick-up lane — but parents still parked by the roadside! A three-lane road turned into one lane, ya Allah. And some even parked right next to the traffic light!” shared @calmdiamond.

“Sadly the case in Malaysia. It seems like some people are taught from their school days, with parents parking right by the roadside as close as possible. Then, when they drive their own cars, they have the same habit of triple parking in front of shops and inconveniencing others. Education really does start at home. Dear parents, please be a little more considerate,” said @AkitiAl.

This is not a problem, is a benefit for Malaysia.
The beauty of our country is that when it comes to special cases, you are allowed to double-triple park, and the law takes a pause.

also same about 1km++, but I use bicycle instead, school got prepare a proper place for us to park bicycle inside school

but if wanna compare 10-15 years ago and the number of cars now, unless your area got side walk that intergrade with bicycle+walking, it isn't safe anymore to cycle as kids these days

Bugimak my time very few kidnapping cases. Used to walk to school and back. Sometimes hang out at friend's house for lunch and go back by 4-5pm.

Nowadays there are so many kidnapping cases so its understandable.

I used to walk home from primary school and secondary school.

Primary school distance from home was only 10 minutes tho.

Secondary school was further. 20 minutes.

I know a rich person hired someone RM3k a month just to become his kid's bodyguard because it's too jam to drive and it's too dangerous alone for a 9 years old girl to go school balik alone.

All the person need to do is follow her to school/koko/friend house/shopping and just make sure she is safe in LRT/Bus

If you say bas mini, you're definitely 80s or 90s kids.

Do you think the environment today is the same as back then

Later when kids kena rob, rape, kidnapped or killed, you're probably the one who start blaming parents for negligence

Those from 80s/90s that condemn either are lonely single or childfree couple by now

I notice that childfree couple or single won't understand the feelings/commitments of having kids

So just save energy arguing with them no matter what horseshit that came out from their mouth, i'll treat it as jealousy only

furthermore, the number of vehicles and crazy drivers/riders does increase a lot compared to 2 or 3 decades ago

Last time KL jam hah, I walk home from school about 40 mins, but taking public transport during heavy rain, public bus can take 2-3 hours, if outside not heavy rain, I won't take bus. No aircond somemore, while heavy rain, cannot put the windows down.... cry

because spare parts for bus got increase in costs now

Instead of every parent drive to drop/fetch their kids, if 1 car can tumpang 3-4 kids, that would really help cut the number of cars

Nope, for MBSKL, VI, SRJK Jln Davidson & Confucian - whenever Confucian holiday - traffic smooth2. But kudos to Confucian, when they opened the access next to Angkasa Hotel that helped much but then PNB 118 came up, but still much better - last time kena jam 30 mins, now max 10 mins only - same time comparison.

The MRT/LRT station also helped. With the access next to Angkasa, more students use the LRT d, further reducing traffic.

If like that you might as well say why Malaysians drive to work and not take bus and MRT?

As for Vietnam, do they have a huge population of foreigners like Bangla and Indon in our country?

Yes, why Malaysian drive to work? Maruah? Show off?

Now with MRT, LRT, KTM available still want to drive into city Center to work.

18 years ago, even with just LRT and KTM, I just drove to the nearest LRT or KTM , then took that to work.

You have a screwed sense of smooth traffic. It may not affect much within the vicinity of those schools you mentioned but overall it still contributes to heavier traffic. And wait till PNB118 is fully open.

Kuen Cheng gotta move. Period. And whatever happened to being schooled near where you live? I know parents just submit some fake address near the school they want their child to go for admission.

What do you think will happen if everyone take LRT, MRT, etc.?

Can our public transport take in all the additional passengers?

Today, a lot of our public transport is already to the max and you want more people take public transport

Now you want all school kids to take public transport too? You think all schools are built near LRT, MRT stations?

Even though I take public transport, I also won't make stupid statement like everyone should take public transport

Not everyone stays in area where there are accessable public transport

For some to drive to public transport and take public transport, the time taken is longer than driving directly to work

The reality is Klang Valley was planned for driving since the 80s

You can blame Tun M for that but its something we can't turn back

Our public transport is to complement driving and not replace driving

Don't even compare our public transport to HK, Japan or Singapore

Our planning for development in Klang Valley was never consistent and it is why it is now impossible to emulate them

Do you think school in Singapore and Japan all build next to LRT and MRT?

Kids took MRT&LRT, then change bus and drop off at nearby bus stop of the school,

Like I say, Malaysia people is entitled, always find excuses that this can’t work, that don’t work.

The fact that it’s so easy to get a car in Malaysia, cheaper loan, makes everyone entitled that must get a car.

Vietnam - imported car used to have 300% tax, now is about 100% - thus not many car on the car, mostly is motorbike

It’s the policy of country that will change the course of direction of development, at Mahathir era, the pride of nationalism and national car, make a cheap car for everyone, resulted this. Thus public transport is not fully been build across the country

Imagine if 50% of all the people who are driving today take public transport

That will mean public transport will have to accomodate 50% more people

Some people here say school kids also take public transport

You sure you still can get in your MRT, LRT, Komuter, etc with additional 50% people and school kids?

Our public transport was not built to be the major source of transportation

You cannot undo what was built for decades as Klang Valley development was not properly planned like Singapore, HK or Japan

I had my fair share of getting sandwiches in peak hour, que with everyone and sometimes got boobs squeeze from behind, man boob, woman boob ect

Like I say, as long the mentality in Malaysia change, getting and building the public transport, roll it out in phases, at residential , school, the route that can connect with public school, university.

People will take public transport.

P/s: I have 2 toddlers, I send my eldest to school by motorbike. 🏍️

And I’m not living in Malaysia

I did plan to come back to Malaysia when my kid going to primary school.

yea . i pick up my kids from schools often and the school is smack right in the middle of residental area. If I can snap my gauntlet and make all the cars dissapear and tell my kids to walk home... they wont make it pass 200m due to many illegal riders aka secondary school students zooming pass with little concern for other road users.

Even those licensed (parents) riders also showed little concern with kids safely outside the schools where slowing down is a must.

i don't think distance is the problem the safety is the utmost priority. today world is unlike yester world.
those days kids can walk 4-5km without worry. those have parent to fetch is a rare spectacle but nowadays is a norm. even if we are late home parent only get angry where have we been to play but now when kids are late parent start to worry what happen to them.

Because there is no public transport in this town lol.

Why not asking kid go to school herself? Because she’s 3 years old. When she’s 7 and we’re in Malaysia, she will go to school take public transport herself, maybe first few weeks I will accompany her.

Oh wait, she will 100% walk to school, why? Because the primary school at my hometown that I will enroll her is 400m away

Clearly you don’t understand what I’m on about. Being allocated far away & actually submitting some fake address so that the child could enter the parent preferred school are 2 entirely different thing.

Clearly you don’t understand what I’m on about. Being allocated far away & actually submitting some fake address so that the child could enter the parent preferred school are 2 entirely different thing.

Just because your parents did it does not mean everyone did it! LOL

i agreed, especially SJKC, some parents fetch their kids using a peti sejuk with grandparents and a maid. Imagine 10 peti sejuk double parked on the roadside. The school I referred to is located near Damansara

yea . i pick up my kids from schools often and the school is smack right in the middle of residental area.

Lots of cars also don't care about kids safety la. Don't only say moto.

Best is bas sekolah who speed through school area. I remember as a kid there is that 1 bus that does it daily.
