A friend of mine helped purchase something for me in US and I wanna use Wise to send money over to pay back.

Has anyone used Wise to send money to a US bank account before? When sending money, do I use ACH or SWIFT?

Have you consider other than Wise? For USD to USD checking account should be ACH (domestic) SWFIT for international transfer.

Can try either one

I use wise on a regular basis. Sending money through wise is pretty straightforward, all you need to know is your friend’s reference number, this is the number you’ll need to enter in wise.

The process of sending money in wise in general starts by clicking on “send”, then add the recipient (reference number or email), how much the recipient will get in usd (it’ll automatically calculate the amount in RM for you), then wise will ask you the purpose of the transaction (I usually will put for goods and services), then you’ll need to transfer the amount of money in RM (FPX is usually the cheapest option), then you hit send.

if he has a WISE account as well, can just send to him through the app, and he can withdraw himself to his bank acc.

  • Make sure you already created USD cash balance in your wise acct
  • wait for your actual US bank acct details to appear
  • you can now manually convert to USD into your USD wise cash balance
  • do ACH transfer to your friend. Take note Wise charges USD1.13 per transfer
swift is more expensive

The recipient needs to have a wise account also, and then he can withdraw the money through his bank account.

Thanks to let me know. I thought from WISE to their US bank account, where i failed to do so
It mean when they transfer back to their own account, less charges imposed.

I recommend splitting up your steps into individual actions. Wise will charge you more for the convenience

Deposit to wise MYR balance, and then manually convert to USD cash balance. Then only send out

Any remainder MYR cash balance, can empty out from Wise by topping up your ewallet like TnG

You can send direct, I.e. deduct from your bank via FPX and immediately send to his bank account in US.

When making the transfer, you can specify ACH, Wire or SWIFT.

The recipient doesnt need to have wise account. You can transfer from your wise account to the recipient’s normal US bank account via ACH as it’s cheaper.

I done it a couple of time. The transfer is immediate. But note that the receiver will be hit with a $15 transfer fee.
