For the past one month, I notice that I have about 20% high packet loss. I am looking at my router log and it is showing me these data. Some friend told me it was due to maxis having to comply to MCMC DNS changes. Is that the real reason, because if it is, then there’s no way to fix this except to change ISP. I also have DNS over HTTP turned on in my router, although I don’t think that’s the cause. What can I do?

My router is set to ping 1.1.1.1 every hour. This resulted in showing 20% packet loss.

High packet loss can be caused by a number of factors, including:
Network congestion: When a network is overwhelmed by too much traffic, it can cause delays or packet loss.
Faulty hardware: Damaged or outdated hardware, such as routers, switches, or cables, can cause packet loss.
Software bugs: Bugs in network software, firmware, or operating systems can cause packets to be dropped or delayed.
Latency issues: Long distances between network devices or multiple network hops can increase packet loss.
Environmental issues: Electromagnetic interference (EMI) or other environmental factors can disrupt network signals and lead to packet loss.
Overloaded devices: When a system is running at a higher capacity than it was designed to handle, it can cause packet loss.
Inadequate signal strength: If the signal strength at the destination is not adequate, it can cause packet loss.
Excessive system noise: Excessive system noise can cause packet loss.
Software corruption: Software corruption can cause packet loss.
Overburdened network nodes: Overburdened network nodes can cause packet loss.
Restarting your modem, router, and computer can help you narrow down the cause of your packet loss.

I’m using Firewalla.
So, what can I do for the packet loss? I don’t think calling maxis will help, does it? Some suggested I should keep on rebooting router and hope I get an IP address that works.

Ping once every hour? If that’s the case the 20% loss is over how many hours?
More importantly, is your browsing/streaming/gaming/downloading affected?
Visit https://packetlosstest.com/ (choose SG server) or https://speed.cloudflare.com for a more accurate representation.

I opened Terminal/Command Prompt and do a "ping 1.1.1.1" command, I get around 20% packet loss.

packetlosstest.com showed me a 30% packet loss to Singapore Server.

speed.cloudflare.com, connecting to server in Kuala Lumpur, is showing inconsistent result. One time I run, I get:
Video Streaming: Average, Online Gaming: Bad, Video Chatting: Bad.

Then I run again and I get
Video Streaming: Good, Online Gaming: Avergae, Video Chatting: Bad.

If I watch Netflix or Youtube, it's ok but often I have to wait sometime while the browser buffer it.

For what it's worth, I am on a 100mbps maxis fiber. Will updating to 300mpbs help?

Should I call maxis and complain? I just don't want to get turn around the garden saying reboot router la, reboot my computer la, etc bangwall.gif I may not have a choice but to try.

So, I'd like to hear - I suppose you both are maxis fiber users? No issues?

That's the first thing that you should do, call their Maxis SC to complain in fact for anything the related to the internet issue. Yes I'm on Maxis Fiber, migrated from Unifi 800mbps. It's probably due of your Firewalla setting. If you still have the original, try to use it without Firewalla first. Also turn off any VPN is you have one. Don't have any issue with Maxis Fiber, it's pretty stable compare to Unifi that usually lag at night probably due to high congestion.

Yeah, my maxis have been pretty stable for years and yes, I am always on Firewalla. There’s no new hardware introduced.

After some research and poking around Firewalla app,
I saw that Firewalla told me I’m double NAT. And that I should call ISP and get a public IP address. The article said that if I’m using Firewalla VPN or Site to Site, then I need public IP. I’m not using VPN nor Site to Site though.
Anyway at least this is a big clue for me to talk to maxis tomorrow. Will they easily gives public IP?

Thanks for your help.

I think its RM10 per month for the Public IP. Maxis Fiber use Private IP for its customer for security.

Rm10 monthly for public IP. Even TM has imposed private IP for plans below 500mbps.
