short circuit usually kena board and power supply.. if both gone, 500 cheap.. if only powersupply, expensive.. eventhough out of warranty, you can still go acer but pay for it lo.. i think under warranty if short circuit also not covered by warranty.. to prevent, use a power surge protector next time kimpetras2 liked this post

Unless its just a matter of changing some IC components, board level repairs are also not a surety it will last for much longer. Imho no harm to try, but if it dies again consider it kaput and just buy a new one hopefully with a UPS as well.

imo 500 is abit overkill but i dont know whats wrong with it
some boards have an onboard fuse thats shorts when overloaded, and changing it will solve the problem, that wont affect much on the other parts, but TS says the tech mentioned CPU, hence inm he will be doing a reflow on the cpu, well thats a 50/50 chance as the cpu itself maybe bad or while reflowing the cpu; overheats and spoils |

Thanks all. |

Different OEM has different levels of protection, some are robust enough to limit surges at the power brick so it only kills that. Cheaply designed/made ones does lack good protection so surges goes directly into mobo. kimpetras2 liked this post

QUOTE(kimpetras2 @ Dec 5 2024, 05:02 PM) Just want to check is RM500 to repair my short circuited Acer Nitro 5 legit? Is it a BGA replacement for the CPU? If that's the case that's not too bad really, but the main issue is as with many BGA or even board level repairs, you should always ask for the warranty period as board level repairs can be a bit unreliable The repairman says because home in Malaysia usually kena short circuit? If i repair back what the chance to kena balik? He says lucky if not kena the graphic card but the rm500 only to repairt CPU Dekat building sebelah loyat. QUOTE The repairman says because home in Malaysia usually kena short circuit? IINM, certain Intel CPUs (from 7th gen -> 11th gen) are very prone to PCH/CPU failures due to inadequate protection from the MOSFET You might want to get second opinion from other board level repairers, Armand666 is a good one (he managed to repair my ASUS router about a year ago, prices are quite good too) This post has been edited by chocobo7779: Dec 7 2024, 09:05 AM kimpetras2 liked this post

QUOTE(hightechgadgets8 @ Dec 5 2024, 05:12 PM) Actually they do, in a different way - Lenovo for instance does board level repairs, but only after a board replacement (under warranty) where the old faulty board is returned to Lenovo for board repair so that they can be reused for warranty repairs kimpetras2 liked this post

My Latitude E6540 has the same problem. Few MOSFETs kaput. If repair at Digital Mall, need about 250. If replace the entire motherboard, need about 350-450 from AliExpress. In the end, I chose to repair it at Digital Mall instead as I couldn't wait 1 month for the new motherboard. Since the repair, it worked well for almost 2 years now. I even upgraded the LCD to IPS and maxed out the drives to 3 and RAM. kimpetras2 liked this post

Updated guys, thanks for giving me advice:
I got it repaired today at a repair shop, in Lowyat. Level 4, I dont remember the name hehe. Cost me RM350 today. But this is the journey: 1. I go to LVL 4 Acer Service Centre, they do for this kind of repairs. But the man said it will take 1 week. With an inspection charge of RM68. They will see first before doing anything. 2. For me I dont want to leave my Laptop there, and go to ask other shop. 1 cannot quote price, and another one yang quoted RM350 and they promise within one hour. 3. I left my Laptop one hour at the repair shop. Checked my things after done repair and okay then I pay. They give me a new charger for my laptop. I got a month warranty. Apparently they said my model one selalu kena rosak since they also repair that model alot. And I ask what to do to prevent, and they said my luck la if kena lagi and dont use my extension with to many things. Use power source for the laptop alone. So now I am scared to use my laptop without protection as advised by others earlier. For me okay lah, not so much as RM500 i said earlier, as I already save money and get quoted RM350. But maybe can get cheaper, I am not sure but grateful to get my laptop again today. |

QUOTE(kimpetras2 @ Dec 7 2024, 09:39 PM) Why would it short? Basically power adapter is converting ac to dc to charge the laptop. A short usually is just failing component or some water damage. The stock power adapter has a fuse just in case of power surge. Even if it fry, also fry power adapter first. If power adapter is okay, then I see no reason to buy a surge protector. Basically just failing components. kimpetras2 liked this post
