Even 1 day is good enough.
Those with 2 - 3 days are great.

Some companies don't even have compassionate leave. Not written in contract.
House flood, burnt down, passed away still need to work unless deduct AL/UL and you still need to answer boss' message.

Have a chat with your staff on how long they need. In cases like this if she has to take care of the kids and some family members whilst her husband does the funeral preparation, it does take time.

THIS.

It's best to talk things out to get a clear picture of the bereaved's situation, travel distance to the funeral rites, length of the funeral rites and time required to settle matters. In the past I've given 1 month compassionate leave to a dutiful employee of 8 years who was never late and never taken a sick day.

Put yourself in the exact same position as your staff, and think how many days of leave you would need. Then use that as your guide.

agree. treat employees well and employees will return the favor 10 folds.

Honestly 5 days of FREE compassionate leave is a bit too much on a per event basis.

If company generous then 5 days but 3 days is the norm.
