The sales pitch forgotten to tell you running cost?

And the oh shit cost if you do crash?

Your "hidden Motorsports costs" tend to escalate very quickly and you can only pay cash to settle. Then what? More personal loan? Then crumble under compounding loan interests of multiple loans to cover multiple loans?

agreed, the "hidden" cost will sometimes cost sht tons of money.

The regular cost is tyres tyres tyres. I race RC scale cars once and even then, those damn rubbers make me bleed.

I can only imagine when scaled up it will cost 10x more.

Actually to be completely honest if you have the talent and no money by now someone would've signed you up.
If you have money and no talent you won't be here asking questions about cost.
If you have neither, then maybe its not for you.

Hi all.

As per subject so let me give you a bit of background.

I went to a local motorsports academy open day recently and they are offering a program to kickstart car racing journey. They have various packages but one that stands out is to buy a Suzuki Swift complete equipped with all the necessities (bucket seat, coilovers and other mods) not to mention unlimited access to their theory classes and mentoring. Basically the car is track ready upon purchase and price quoted includes classes and mentoring. They have a roadmap on how they going to groom their students from absolute beginners to season debut at local circuit to compete in their own championship.

I see this as an opportunity of a lifetime and I thought finally I found what I always wanted since kid. Problem is, I need to pay at least 50% of the total cost to secure my place in the academy and tbh I don't have that kind of cash stash somewhere. I've been thinking non stop since that day on how can I earn that deposit amount before they jack the price next year.

I earn round 120k/year. Married with a kid who's still in kindergarten. Have no long term loan under my name except for my daily. Credit card paid in full every month without fail. Maxing out the card is out of option since I use it for household expenditures.

Really need some sound advice from the community as I can't stop taking my mind off this.

Come across this video and reminded me of this thread... motorsport is not a cheap sport. Thats why most F1 drivers are from wealthy family or got support from sponsors.

i think the real question is why do you wanna get into motorsports?

Sepang racing may be a far stretch on money commitments.. especially if you dont know if you can commit to the whole program yet. Ever thought of trying autocross? lower barrier of entry, bring anything and drive it thru a course set up with cones. clock your fastest time. Some bring their daily cars, some bring their weekend warrior cars.

maximum 3 mins of focus and intense driving, so all fitness levels can easily adapt. relatively safe environment, crashes do at times happen but at much lower speeds so normally it isnt too bad. Cars dont need to be anything special. These days thers even an auto/cvt category.

so cheap starter cars anything on the marketplace will work smile.gif

Been a few months. Wondering how TS is doing in his persuits (pun intended)

Lets face it,

Motorsports is expensive. It's like really expensive and topped up to a whole other level. Even at amateur club level racing.

If you are really keen, just keep doing what you are doing. Attend track days. Practice. Get your own car. Learn to work on it. Keep it as a hobby that you would enjoy for some time to come.

I'm an ex-instructor myself and have done some club racing. And I can tell you. Even if you think you are talented, you are only scratching the surface. There are a lot of fast guys around. Those that started much younger. More driven. Less commitments. Bigger pockets to back them up. Just having aspirations of being a good driver isn't enough. It wont make you go pro.

The intention of this post is not to discourage TS. But I have been there a long while back. If there is interest, all is not lost. You can still be a gentleman's racer later in life if your skills finally matches your talent and have money (or someone) to back you up.

Just not now.

How's it going? Updates?

Are you already in the local touge scene, weekend drives, typical famous modified car workshops events in PJ/Sunway etc

The above helps alot in giving you an entrée of performance oriented car driving and all the untold costs, and might even be enough to satisfy the urge for "motorsports", because it damn well did for myself and alot others of like minded folks.

Among friends in the weekend touge scene, there are those that wants even a step further, but not full-blown raceteam, so they're into GT 7 world series races, and their online races - one of them got very close to qualify in malaysia's nation cup, which entails him travelling to europe if he won, but ain't nobody knows or cares who comes 2nd or 3rd place lol.

Don't laugh, but if you're innately good at proper simracing game (gt7/iracing etc) - you can bet your ass you 100% have talent in real life peformance car driving, as told from my friend who casually got gold trophy for all license tests by quite a margin: "It's not about how realistic or true to life this Cayman S ingame is as compared to your real car bro, it's about how you can TELL the characteristic of the car you're currently driving ingame, and adapt to it's quirks and extract the performance from there"

Well, that shut me up nicely because i was making excuses on how GT7 is so fake or how come so many car handling macam sampan, tyre tarak grip, brek abit then spin, lanciao impossible to get gold trophy on nurburgring without dq's etc etc. And true enough... this fella could powerslide, rotate and screech his tyre to hell in real life driving, when the rest of us - the moment steering feel light already kecut bola and car goyang goyang lol, so you might want to see if you have talent in actual sim-racing GAME. (important emphasis on what simracing game you're playing, if it's forza/need for speed or some other initial D arcade game, those are pointless games, you need real racing sim games)

edit: more links https://www.gran-turismo.com/gb/live/ ,some example of how huge this e-sports scene for simracers, if you're a hidden gem - you might even get signed onto an international raceteam.

Wah still got people replying this tered.

Updates? Well I didn't go through with the initial plan. I save up a bit, bought a Proton Savvy manual for cheap, replace whatever I can and practice manual driving.

I was supposed to join an autocross event last month but Savvy being Savvy, crank sensor went kaput the night before.

All hopes are not lost. I spoke to some people around and turns out there are opportunities I can grab by joining those small2 events. Need to do some networking of course.

All in all, my passion in motorsports is still burning but I'm doing it smartly.

Thank you all for the kind advice and sharing your experience. Much love 🫰🏼

I have GT7 on my PS5 but somehow I still go back to EA WRC or DiRT 2.0 . There's something about rally that hits different compared to circuit racing.

I myself had done countless unspeakable things with my Savvy and daily. I can't forget the first time I did heel and toe my wife said I'm gonna break the car by revving the car that way, disregarding the fact that there wasn't any jerking during the downshift lol.

start slow bro.. married with kids? and at the same time you wanna do motorsports? its contradiction, both need the attention and believe me it will wear you down..

my advice, focus your family first.. then when all your kids grow up at least to teenagers, then you can start slowly..

If you need some guide, can pm me, i can try to share what i can. My background, i’ve been doing S1k since 2012 till now, did a few season of MCS. Some success here and there. Still chasing for the top step lol.
As a family man with 3 kids now, it is tough to spend any extra time in circuit. Priority will always my family. As much as i still have passion for motorsports, i just make do with whatever time i can spare.
