PETALING JAYA: A climber died while descending from the summit of Mount Kinabalu in Kundasang today.

The 54-year-old local woman was reported to have experienced hypothermia at the 8km mark on Mount Kinabalu, Harian Metro reported.

Ranau fire and rescue department chief Ridwan Taib said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 11.24am.

He said the rescue team and the victim’s mountain guide requested additional assistance from Sabah Parks (TTS) staff and the Mountain Search and Rescue Team (MoSAR).

The victim was then taken to a sick bay for further treatment, including additional oxygen assistance and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with the help of an automated external defibrillator (AED), he said.

However, the victim remained unconscious. She was then carried down to Timpohon Gate by the MoSAR, TTS, and mountain guides.

He said the woman was examined by medical officers from the health ministry upon arrival at Timpohon Gate, but was pronounced dead.

The body was then handed over to the police for further action, he said.

A lot of my old fag friends think their frequent hikes at ttdi or broga makes them fully readuly for the mt kinabalu climb. There are plenty of other risks involved. RIP to her.

Did this climb before the quake years ago.

Wouldn't do it again.

Definitely wouldn't do it in my 50s but I understand why many would

Unker dun get your point. Everything also got risk. Got other risk involved means better dun go?? If oldfag friend is hiking weekly that already makes them more prepared than many.

The Kinabalu trail is difficult, but it very well maintained and many local sabahans go weekly basis. Non locals signing up must have a local guide accompany to go up and down with them.

Jangan main2 yo, from laban rata to peak and peak down to laban rata is quite challenging even though its just 2km

The weather when i climbed was -2 degree celsius and 99% humidity.

Kiara or broga height is very low compared to kinabalu tats why.

If your not very fit, even tahan also you will feel half dead already.

Want to be fully prepared for kinabalu, go climb mountain not hill.

RIP to tat woman, did not expect the cause of death to be hypothermia at kinabalu.

Saw someone think that can climb mount kinbalu is just another day of hiking

Let me remind you a old random internet wisdom : just because you can do it doesnt mean u should do it

Even my sister say need adequate preparation like at least regular hike 3-5 years before going to this mountain .

Unker never said dont do it. But make sure that one understand all the risk and prep accordingly. Agree that they are more fit than many (me included) but that is just a part of the preparation.
