low light photography without flash is possible due to the f/1.4, which is a great advantage. thumbup.gif

Well, most likely you will use 1.4 very little but its sharp at 2.8 which is a nice aperture range for potrait, still photog like food and stuff.

Since you are stopping down from 1.4-2.8, it will produce sharper images smile.gif

Therefore, you are getting a fast lens, a sharp lens and one that can AF with the D40/x smile.gif Not to mention, shooting at one focal length will let you experience photography in a different way.

i think any kens can be used to craete HDR shots...all you have to tweak with is the exposure compensantion smile.gif some people use RAW files to get the most out of the photos...

looks like u have never used an SLR before. I suggest u get a PnS for the dinner prior to no experience in using the D40 DSLR. If u still want to use the D40, just turn it to auto mode, and use the external speedlight (if any) to be on the safe side. why i suggest so is because there's no exact settings for a dinner. You'll have to gauge it the environment yourself and do the proper settings yourself based on experience. wink.gif

I agreed with edministrator, used up PnS.if u insist on using SLR Setting.base on my 2cent,I would say you are using kit lenses and would be taken at indoor,ISO400,shutter speed 1/4 to 8,aperture F 5.6-F8.please have a firm+steady hand to do this,as the lighting maybe poor and please use up the AutoFocus we have here, dont go for MF.
I suggest you give it a try now in the indoor situation, try to train yourself up 1st at least before the dinner. smile.gif

Since you're asking here i assume you're interested in Nikon. With your budget you can already get D40, D40x or even the slightly new D60 hehe. With kit lens of course. Definitely can get below 2.5k me thinks.

nonono...the shutter speed is too low...i suggest you getting used to the camera yrself...try out what settings does what.. nobody here knows the lighting condition in your dinner venue, how far are you from the subject etc etc... if not in time to learn then better use PnS cam...why do i say that? my friend just bought his d40x and went for his relatives dinner...ended up calling me 5 times just to ask about what settings to use... 1/4 is surely too low..you may not be shaking but your object is...thats why my friend what like: " everybody looks so blur in the picture even when i use tripod!!" tongue.gif

Depends if you need the extra megapixel on D40x or the extra features on the D60. If not just get the D40. smile.gif

perhaps u should get more infos here :
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/612308

for the mean time, just few to recommend :

Beginner / tight budget :
1) nikon d40 / sony a200 / canon 350D

no really tight budget / ready to add more lens in futures.
1) canon 400D/ 40D etc.
2) D80

personally, not advisable for you to get the d40/x/d60 if u plan to play with lots of lens,
the lack of motors will definitely limit some of you ur lens range.

And the sony A200 is cheap and best valued in its range.
