Seems like Ally X quite picky on 100w charger ?

Just bought a Baseus Desktop charger <Link> and Ally X is behaving weird.

If battery care mode on with 80% above, Ally X can bypass charging and activate 30w turbo mode but the charge wattage like showing 1w only.

If battery care mode off with less than 100%, Ally X will connect and disconnect charging and repeat until i unplug the USB-C.

* Tested with differ 100w cable - Ugreen & Baseus resulting same issue

I have another 100w Ugreen dekstop charger but doesn't have this issue, hmm..
Original 65w charger also no issue (obviously tongue.gif )

I’m also using the 100W UGreen charger with my JSAUX docking station. I found that a 65W charger isn’t sufficient when charging the Ally while using the docking station, as some of the power is drawn by the docking station itself, leaving the Ally unable to charge. That’s why I opted for a 100W charger.

Regarding your BASEUS 100W charger, it’s likely not providing sufficient voltage or amperage, which could be causing the issue you're experiencing. Could you share the link to the specific BASEUS charger you're using?

Here’s the link to mine: https://my.shp.ee/x92TmKG

You can refer to the spec as per my attachment

It has both:

1) 20a5v = 100w
2) 20a3.25v = 65w

I not sure what is the issue though but when i check reddit, seems like Ally X is quite picky on 100w charger and Asus also make some changes in Bios to somehow "reject" certain charger

I got post in reddit : Reddit 100w Baseus so u can see the GIF

I just updated my ALLY to Windows 11 24H2.

I haven’t tested it with games yet, but I noticed something: the idle RAM usage seems slightly higher compared to 23H2.

On 23H2, it typically stayed around 3.5GB, but after the update to 24H2, it’s now sitting at roughly 4GB.

What’s interesting is that my ALLY is really barebones—I’ve removed a lot of the bloatware that comes with Windows 11, and I don’t even have Microsoft Office installed.

Hopefully, the RAM usage stabilizes and drops back to 3.5GB after a few days.

Interesting, mine is with all stock running the latest Win11, the usage now is at 5.8GB (after freeing up memory using the MyAsus program could get 4.7GB).
Your figure is pretty impressive.

A clean install works wonders—no unnecessary ASUS bloatware except for MyASUS and Armoury Crate SE.

I also went ahead and removed some of the pre-installed Microsoft bloatware to keep things lean:
Note: You may need to use elevated PowerShell commands to remove some of these apps.

1. Phone Link (formerly known as Your Phone)
2. Camera (ROG ALLY doesn't have a webcam so what's the point?)

So far mine also running vanilla Asus Windows 11 out of the box which initial setup and windows update already give me 24H2.

Not sure about the idle memory of mine, maybe will check it once i get home.

Yesterday released the new AMD driver that support AFMF2 but no matter how i check and restart, it just won't appear in both MyAsus app or Armoury Crate app.

I end up download from the Official Site and manually install.

You guys punya when device idling, how does the fan noise or fan blowing sound like?
Is it noticeable?

I'm using 13w silent mode and in windows desktop only without doing anything i can hear it blowing
Not sure is my ears too sensitive or what.

Under system assist showing 4800rpm and 3700rpm with 17db normally.

After not using that charger to test again for since 17th December 2024, today plug in and test and magically it works :\

Dunno what magic or any update that trigger Ally X to receive the charging.
As far as i know middle only has the AMD driver and the AI sound driver thing update.

The rest only daily Windows defender definition.

The Legion GO S sounds impressive, especially with the Z2 Extreme chip, 32GB RAM, and dual fans. I always prefer handhelds with a dual-fan setup over a single fan—cooling is such an important factor.

As for the ASUS ROG Ally 2, an AMOLED screen and 32GB RAM would be amazing! Hopefully, ASUS delivers.

Zotac Gaming Zone's handheld is definitely unique with features like the built-in camera and touchpad, but the single-fan setup is a letdown. Better cooling would’ve made it even more appealing.

My ALLY shows an "insufficient power" message (though it still charges) when connected to the JSAUX docking station with the UGreen 100W charger.
However, when I plug the UGreen 100W charger directly into the ALLY, the message disappears.

Weird, right?

By the way, how’s everyone enjoying their ALLY X? What games are you currently playing?
I’m in the middle of The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria—having a blast so far! Although I do wish I had a bigger screen to play on.

Here’s hoping the ALLY 2 will have a bigger screen (AMOLED would be a plus!) while keeping the 80Wh battery from the ALLY X. I’m already saving up! laugh.gif

My first impression after half a day with ally x.

Claw is pretty much a 1st gen product. Msi Centre M is barebones and the interface is not 'gamerlike' eventhough its a gaming device.
Claw is squeky on the bottom half of the device if you grip it thightly whereas ally x feels sturdy.
Claw is larger and feels a bit heavier compare to ally x eventhough not that much weight differences because of ally x compact size.

In terms of FPS i only test one games that is wuthering waves. Yes that game took over my life. Haha.
WUWA is not optimise for AMD because you can only toggle FSR on and off.
Whereas on intel you can toggle settings for XeSS intel version of DLSS ai upscalling.
The performance is on par between intel and amd but the TDP for claw is almost 40W most of the time and on the ally x is generally lower. I can barely play 1 hour on the claw.
On ally x more than 2 hours is not a problem.

Guess Ally X is very picky on charging as i mentioned above, lol ...
My Baseus 100w charger sometime will still trigger "stop charging - 1w" issue while sometime won't doh.gif

Bought the new Skull n Co faceplate and grip case recently to replace my Jsaux Mod Case (Cause top alignment doesn't match no matter how i adjust , heat it) due to my OCD sweat.gif

Playing Hogwarts Legacy right now which bought during the last steam sales RM62.25 and very enjoy it.
The new AFMF 2 doesn't impress me at all btw cause the ghosting issue when pan left and right as well as Frame Rate very not consistent since it still depends on actual FPS must be 45fps above so now just stick to FSR 2.0 (else FSR 3.0 if available)

I also bought skull n co case. I like take off the case to clean it and jsaux case is bit hard to take of at the trigger part.

You can try lossless scalling on steam just rm19.90. If dont like it can get refund.
They update the frame gen to version 3.0 couple weeks ago.
Use rivatuner to lock the frame rate so u dont get frame spike that can cause lag.

Yea, might wanna try but have to see how it works

So far still ok on the current setting of my games with manual TDP
But as a user coming from Steam Deck (i still own it), sometime really think Ally X consumption really quite high even with similar setting.

My tales of graces F remastered in steam deck 720p can consume only 7~9w overall usage but Ally X with similar setting and 9w TDP but the consumption is 13~15w.

That's just windows. Unless microsoft going to do something about it power consumption is going to be high.
More CPU & GPU cores & faster ram compared to steamdeck.
For ex. My msi claw also use more power to run games compare to ally x at the same settings.
I play hoyoverse and other gacha games so steamdeck is no go for me.

The only OEM can do is to switch to more power efficient chipset like msi did with claw 8 that use lunar lake.

The new MSI (intel) Claw looks nice but like minor improve compare to Ally X
I think Ally X next successor gonna be end of this year ?

Since Z2 series also not big improvement for the price comparison.
