We have already seen competing format Blu-ray's PC hardware selling at RM2999 and most recently $2499 at Low Yat. Now Asus introduces HD DVD PC drive. With the XBox add on - external HD DVD drive for PC selling at less than RM1000. I wonder how more cheaper can this Asus baby be http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/11/0...t_hd_dvd_drive/ The HR-0205T is a read-only unit that can handled single- and dual-layer HD DVD media, and single-layer HD DVD-R discs, all at 2.4x. It'll also read all the many DVD formats at 5x and CD media at 15x. Unsatisfied with the drive's inability to burn discs? Then Asus offered the fact that it emits just 21.1dB of noise when playing HD DVDs, though it goes up to 23.7dB when it's spinning a dual-layer DVD. For comparison, both are less than a typical notebook hard drive's operational 26dB. Asus said the HR-0205T can be mounted horizontally or vertically. The drive connects to a parallel ATA port, but an PATA-SATA adaptor allows it to be hooked up to the more up to date, serial bus.

Well it cost less because it's not a burner (yet). I think if it has the burning capability of the Blu-ray drive the cost will be much the same. Whatever happens, I don't think it's feasible for us to own any of the drive for the next 2 years. I for one will stick with my tried and tested obselete 4GB capasity DVDs and it's RM2499, not $2499.

Actually right now Blu Ray is winning the war. This is because of the huge penetration of Blu Ray in the PS3. A major coup was when Disney decided to back Blu Ray.
The XboX drive is the best bang for buck though, if all we want is low cost HD video. IIRC, eventhough the Xbox drive is cheap, we still need to make sure gfx card n LCD is HDCP. Or else it wont work.

Dont forget hd dvd/blueray playback on pc still need directx hardware acceleration(DXVA) eg nVidia purevideo, and ATi Avivo, both also need external software player to works(only for h264 iirc) eg powerdvd or nero 7 ultra edition. Coreavc is another choice, which is "cracked" and distributed on some codec pack already our opensource Hero(ffmpeg) is still too slow for this

RM2K plus for a optical rom. like it or not main stream consumer have NOT interested what so ever in 15g or 25g recordable media. 4.7 is more than enough. If consumers want more bytes, double layer DVD would have already been extremely mainstream by now (10 years after its introduction) yet we are still looking at RM0.70 single layer DVD vs RM13 double layer dvd Added on November 7, 2007, 7:20 amQUOTE(1024kbps @ Nov 3 2007, 01:34 PM) hd dvd max bitrate is 29.4 mbps, bluray is 40mbps, but i bet u cant tell the visual difference between them unless one of them were badly "mastered". nope all the bits and byte looks fancier on BD spec sheet than HD DVD spec sheet. but they we look at the end result. Get a RM700 XBox 360 add on and a RM2999 Pioneer or Sony Blu-ray drive, play 300 on your 24in HDMI screen and see if you can spot the different. And now take into consideration that the cheaper HD DVD has MUCH MORE features - can download directly from website to HD DVD player, out of this world's advanced interactive features as compared to Blu-ray slight upgrade to DVD style menu .. and make up your mind again. But last i read no format is winning. People who bought PS3 not neccessary buy any Blue movies(ahem!)...and i believe one of the previous Blue Ray supporter studio also support HD-DVD format now (can't remember who)....so it's still 50-50. One thing's for sure. PS3 is the LOSER in the videogame war this generation. That is for certain. This post has been edited by Matrix: Nov 7 2007, 09:13 AM
