bear in mind the opponents today also not like the opponents of the previous golden generation... the old peak holland wouldnt have so easily kena hoot by england.. lol... so in southgate case, its really super duper lucky... lol
Exactly. People seemed to forget how tough competition were back then. Few examples, Spain's golden generation during late 2000s to mid-late 2010s. Italy WC winning squad in 2006 has Pirlo, Cannavaro, Del Piero, Totti, Buffon, Zambrotta, Gatusso. Who do they have now? Holland 2002 squad has RVN, De Boer brothers, Kluivert, Overmars, Seedorf. Who do they have now? Depay? Gakpo? lmao
Having said that, take nothing away from previous England's coaches being sh*t as well - Sven, Roy etc. so yeah it all adds up.
In short, Southgate is a super mediocre yet lucky coach. Get such an easy path to Final and yet almost get knocked out in R16 to Slovakia. If it were the other half, bet my whole fortune they would have gotten knocked out earlier. I absolutely dread the possibility of seeing him managing Utd.
