Given its partnership with Geely, it is likely that the upcoming Proton EV will be based on existing models under the Chinese automotive group. Several possible options include the Geometry brand which has several electric SUVs like the Geometry C and Geometry E

Galaxy E5 is developed for RHD in mind so maybe this is the one for Proton
https://carnewschina.com/2024/04/15/geely-g...n-chinese-miit/
*
The size of the Geely Galaxy E5 is 4615/1901/1670 mm, and the wheelbase is 2750 mm. That make it longer than 4519/1831/1694 mm and wheelbase of 2670mm of Proton X70. Proton X70 is already retailing at RM100k, that will makes E5 an unlikely "affordable EV".

It may still comes but perhaps as the second or third models?

plenty of wiggle room then...

Good thinking...Added to the injury, the road tax of EV can be creative too, to protect P1 and P2, just wondering how it will comes out by this month

Proton brand has legacy baggage. Don't think it can hold up EV image in market with new players and no ice baggage. Better off with Geometry brand than rebadge to Proton.
*
Except Tsla and some Chinese newer players like Nio, Xpeng, leapmotor, etc. , most EV makers or brands actually comes from ICE making first including the EV pioneer Nissan, BMW, Volvo, Renault, Hyundai Kia and a whole load of EV makers from China, e.g. Chery, GWM, SAiC (MG), GAC, Changan

So I don't think Proton is that unique in that sense of carrying such baggage

Not scared no spare parts ke?

And the usual “mmg macam tu punya” when complain of issues with the car, but to be fair I also hear it fromHonda SC too.
*
Let put it is this way, BEV =less parts , less spare parts required, problem solved?LOL

Also data show BEV less likelihood to breakdown compare to ICE

But given a low price, some folks may just risk it, right?

Of course you have a point.

Also , buying cheap keeps people poor, I certainly have that experience when buying cars cheap , two times. Poor me!

But the key to these is affordable, if you live paycheck to paycheck, and want a BEV , an affordable BEV is a heaven sent.

So far the poll does show desire for both proton or perodua affordable EV....albeit to very varying degree, 20% of survey said waiting for Proton while less than 7% is waiting for Perodua

Almost 40% don't want BEV and almost 40% also willing to b to pay more when buying BEV beyond affordable pricing of P1 and P2

The encouraging note from the survey is more than 60% considering BEV

the keyword here is too open and many question marks are raised. affordable cz need to put it cheaper hence putting lower tech battery/ lesser range distance to compensate for the price? Or best just take the existing proven, finished product China EV or other EV and make some slight improvement for our market demand, better interior, etc.

EV is about technology and its a game of big players.
*
I think we can still expect a few trims as P1 and P2 has room to play with that

NINGBO (China), April 24 — Zeekr, a luxury electric vehicle (EV) brand under the Geely group, is mulling over entering Malaysia’s automotive market with its newly developed right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles.

Zhejiang Zeekr Intelligent Technology Co Ltd technology vice-president Zhao Chunlin said the global electric mobility technology brand aims to sell the RHD vehicles together with the left-hand drive vehicles to at least 50 international markets by year-end.

The brand is currently present in over 20 foreign markets, with plans to expand to Malaysia, Thailand, New Zealand and Australia, among others, he said to reporters during a site visit to Zeekr’s factory in Ningbo here today.

Zeekr is actively pursuing opportunities, including expanding into international markets — a move which could potentially benefit Malaysia in light of the partnership between Geely and Proton Holdings Bhd.

Geely Holding currently owns a 49.9 per cent stake in Proton.

The Zeekr Intelligent Factory, located in Ningbo, utilises advanced technology and innovative processes to guarantee superior product quality by prioritising transparency, efficiency, and sustainability throughout its operations.

Zeekr aims to double its delivery in 2024 to 230,000 cars from 118,685 cars in 2023.

Last month, the automaker initiated pre-orders for the RHD Zeekr X urban SUV and Zeekr 009 MPV vehicles in Thailand.

This decision was made in response to the growing demand for high-quality smart EVs in the Southeast Asian region.

Zeekr utilises Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) and includes its own battery technologies, battery management systems, electric motor technologies and electric vehicle supply chain. — Bernama

Poll number has jumped from 30 respondent to 39, result has also changed in positioning.

Now it shows equal 20% waiting for Proton EV and another 17.5% waiting for Perodua.

32.5% will buy other BEV

That makes 70% willing to buy BEV

The reluctant to buy BEV percentage has dropped from 40% to 30% only

imho... resale value... this is the stigma... stem from our low pay...

also bev quite new here... most folk taking the wait n see attitude because there is no real push yet away from ice... and public charging is confusing as fak...

people also don't realize the pull factor... i see ppl comparing say 100k mg4 to city/vios... its only 100k because zero excise duty, otherwise its really a 200k car for fair comparison here... des why when i looked at the electre... so cheap!!! but that car really too big... looking at the macan... still big... i prefer small pocket rocket, may have a long wait for this
*
Resale Value won't be an issue if you can buy them cheap and in cash for some. RM100k is a big sum to pay in cash but, how about RM50k?

The real issue is PPP (Protection of P1 and P2). The protection comes at a cost. Bacause where they are no protection, see what happens :

In Indonesia

https://en.tempo.co/read/1839049/top-10-car...guo-ev-included

In Thailand

https://www.dsf.my/2023/12/wuling-air-elect...st-in-thailand/

In Vietnam

https://e.vnexpress.net/news/business/compa...er-4677483.html

In Philippines

https://visor.ph/cars/you-can-now-buy-wuling-evs-in-ph/

Does Indonesia has good charging infra, does Phillips has it, does Vietnam?

It doesn't bother them there, why would it bother us here, right?

proton is a unique brand that make cars that cant sell globally
*
Yet local seems to be supportive

https://www.wapcar.my/news/proton-sales-in-...-of-civic-79193

Also, we are not that unique, GM cars of America also can't sell well globally. So bad 7ntil they exited Europe and South East Asia

Only USA and China care about them

A bunch of Indian cars also don't sell elsewhere.

x90 sales lack vs CX8 tell everything, this car model is failed big time. Thanks to fire accident last time, keep using 1.5T 3 cylinder engine + mild hybrid (taboo name for normal buyer) for the sake of getting 300nm and rival Tiggo 8 with better bang for money. If they need 300nm should use 1.8T engine instead

That is why Chinese +ICE is no good as far as I am concerned

Look at Chery Omoda , and look at this Proton

The X series been years already, sure wow factor no more. Need facelift asap with meet customer features demand, AA and ACP. All China brand no issues giving that while Proton still slow with Acotech junk company
