Potter 6 - 10/10. Best Potter yet.
My Sister's Keeper: 9/10. Never thought Diaz as an actress until now....Breslin and that other girl were fantastic as well. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Aug 12 2009, 01:58 PM) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy I could not agree less. HGTG was an absolute mess - a trainwreck. I didn't find it funny, I didn't find it absurd, I just found it boring. Awesome movie! Stop trying to look for a real story here, because there isn't really one. Instead just sit back and enjoy the details and individual moments of hilarity and absurdity... that is, if you can get the humour. The love story is actually pretty good. It's not overbearing and doesnt impose itself, but in the end when they get together it feels genuine. Plus that dolphin song is awesome as hell! 4.5/5 (Btw, I've never read the book, but judging from the movie I think the book should be even better) Adventureland At first I thought this was an Apatow production, but I wasnt surprised to see that it wasnt because this is so much more grounded than any of the movies from the Apatow factory. It's decidedly more mature, and the comedic elements are mere side dishes and not found in abundance (though it is reminiscent of the Apatow comedies). I think its unfair to label this a comedy when I think it is more of a drama. While the pace and characters can (rarely) be a bit... languid, I very much liked it. Ending is a bit too convenient though. 4/5 But I'm glad someone likes Adventureland. I'm quite a Kristen Stewart fan This post has been edited by kobe8byrant: Aug 13 2009, 01:02 AM |

Up
4.5/5 I liked it but I just didn't completely 'buy' the story. It's better than Ratatouille and Cars but not as good as the rest of other Pixar's work . |

QUOTE(Mov_freak @ Oct 9 2009, 09:21 PM) Rebecca (1940) Sorry mov_freak, that doesn't prove you're a Hitchcockian. That proves iMDB and Wiki makes everyone an instant movie buff Directed by Alfred Hitchcock Produced by David O. Selznick Several interesting facts about this movie. David O. Selznick had produced Gone with the Wind and it was a smashing hit. He then brought a famous director form England to Hollywood to make Hollywood movies. He lured Alfred Hitchcock to Hollywood by buying the rights to Rebecca a popular book and he knew that Hitchcock wanted to direct the movie version of it (Hitchcock himself wanted to buy the rights to the book). Having "invited" Hitchcock to the States, it was immediate apparent that both person have strong will and did things differently. David O. Selznick wanted the movie to be a word to word translation of the book, and Alfred Hitchcock wanted to take some artistic licensing (changing things that would not work for a movie) David O. Selznick was a workaholic and is often sleeping on his couch in his office at night whislt Hictchcock would be home for dinner. Through David O. Selznick "adamentness" Hitchcock was able to make Rebecca the way his intended. One of the way he managed that was that everytime David O. Selznick was on Location, no filming was done (therefore he cannot intervene) and as soon as he left the stage, Hitchcock would quickly filmed what he want!! Now for the movie itself. There were conflict between the two leads. Laurence Olivier was already a well known actor at the time whilst Joan Fontaine was very new to the game. Apparently Laurence never gave Joan the time of the day between the takes. There was even a story which states that everyone threw Joan a birthday party because it was her birthday during the filming of the movie, and Laurence didn't even drop in!! This could be due to the fact the Laurence wanted his real girlfriend of the time, Vivien Leigh, as the role whom Joan is currently playing. Another interesting note is that the role whom Joan played, has no name, and the movie title Rebecca is actually the name of Laurence character's first dead wife, who she (Joan) feels like she is still competing with. The story is interesting. Shy girl meets rich widow man, widow man falls for shy girl, sweeps her off her feet and marries her. They toured Europe and everything is great until he brings her home... where the proverbial $hit hits the fan. I don't want to say more until the interested parties had the chance to see this I hope this is what you meant Makakeke! |

Didn't you mention earlier back you're a Hitchcock fan? never mind. Just messing with you.
Came back from (500) Days of Summer. What I can say though is that if Billy Wilder were still alive, you wouldn't bet against this movie being made by him. I've read a lot of reviews comparing this to Annie Hall and High Fidelity and I don't know why (never watched those movies) but this movie reminded me a lot of The Apartment. JGL played his character the same way Jack Lemmon played his in The Apartment- funny, sympathetic, quirky but most certainly believable. I don't know what to think of it in the long run but I certainly haven't seen anything like this before. The first great romantic comedy of the new century? I think it would be in the Top 10. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Mar 10 2010, 11:48 PM) Sometimes I can never tell if you actually liked a movie from your review. A lot of movies you see now, you go "Meh, I've seen that millions of times" and Airplane! is like that but it's a kind of movie where every time I watch it, I notice a new gag. It's crude but I think it's considered tame compared to a lot of what we see nowadays.Airplane! - Finally got to watch this. Mehhhhhhh. I dont see how it is much better than the Scary Movie movies, and the first 30 mins were embarrassingly bad. Only after Leslie Nielson appears and an actual situation arises (people start getting sick) with a semblance of plot does it get better. It's still mostly crude, unfunny, toilety jokes though, the kind every critic pan these days. 2.5/5 |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Mar 12 2010, 12:04 AM) Yeah I think I'll watch Green Zone. Ebert gave it four stars. I may not agree with him all the time, but I can enjoy a good action thriller. I just hope it doesn't lay on the politics too thick. Didn't know you were a fan of Greengrass. I love the man.I liked Sky Captain as well, when I saw it a few years back. Looks great, leads have great chemistry, good humour. Third act as you said should've been better. Just finished watching The Princess and the Frog. Pretty good, but nothing particularly memorable. As light entertainment for the family, it works. The animation itself is underwhelming at times, after you've seen the rich drawings of classic Disney like Beauty & the Beast, The Lion King, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Aladdin. Anyway, it adds to a string of fine animated films from 2009: Fantastic Mr. Fox Up Ponyo Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs Coraline Mary and Max The Princess and the Frog OK, maybe none of these is ass good as Toy Story, Beauty and the Beast, or Spirited Away, but surely they to add up to the best year for animation ever? |
