This past 1 month I had 3 encounters within my network of friends that own pets - pure bred dogs to be exact, like Husky. I don’t rear pets because my wife is not supportive of it - she thinks they are dirty. Gotta respect that so I can have a harmonious family. Anyway my jaw dropped I learnt that my friends they spent a fortune to upkeep their pets. They spent on:
1. Dog walker walking the dog 8 hours a day, 5 days a week
2. Pet hotel when they are away for holiday abroad
3. Pet insurance
4. Monthly grooming - this I’m aware. Seen a lot of that
5. Pet nanny. They even paid RM2,000/month and took the trouble fetching their dog after work
6. Pet funeral service

I can understand nowadays many people don’t want to have kids and chose to rear pets instead, treating them like own family members. Having pets meaning less headache no need to worry about kids doing drugs, send them to university, get them a driving license…etc. Gosh, my dad my used to rear stray dogs in my younger days to guard the house from intruders. Pets nowadays are spoil brats I think

On vet bills,
Mongrels are more hardy. Pure breeds usually have their particular issues eg goldens have hip issues

I have a family of Mongolian Gerbils (from a pair) and had to separate them before it's out of control ..

The cage upgraded from RM100 to each Rm500 and requires only 2 for each sexes .. lucky is one time off.

This did not include weekly sandbath, food of my choice for them from Oxbow brand and Versele which is one of the most expensive pick for them smile.gif

Also throw in at least 5 variety of snacks on a other plate (each cage got 2 serving portions : 1 main bowl and 1 snack bowl) such as sunflower seeds, mealworms, dry grass like alfafa hay, molar stick (strawberry), freeze-dried tofu, dried dandelions, vitamins drop in their water bottle, etc )

They just have a short lifespan and living in caged; might as well let them enjoy under my care ..

P/s: No money, pls don't adopt a pet ..

I just spent on dog food and snacks for my good friend (rescued Doberman Pinscher) around RM250 monthly.

Annual renew license RM10 and vaccination is around RM70 per shot. No grooming need (short hair) and I bathed him myself once every week.

He's healthy and seldom visit vet. But he got diagnosed of cancer in 2022 and we decided to put him to sleep. Euthanasia + funeral (cremated) cost RM2k.

I have a cat, and yeah, taking care of pets can get pretty expensive, even if you try to keep it simple. I usually spend around RM200-300 a month on food, litter, and vet check-ups. Sometimes, unexpected costs pop up, like when my cat got sick after eating something she shouldn’t have. Grooming isn’t much of a problem since cats clean themselves, but I still buy brushes and basic stuff to keep her looking good.

I found a forum with tips on saving money on pet care, and people shared useful ideas like making homemade toys and choosing budget-friendly food without losing quality. One thing I’ve learned is that regular vet visits can actually save money by preventing bigger health problems. If you’re thinking about getting a pet, it’s a good idea to check out cat insurance singapore forum to help cover unexpected vet bills.

I have 6 kampung dogs in my kampung house and a cat.

I'm giving them 2 meals a day.

Morning, a cup of 26% protein local brand kibbles. at night giving biljac kibbles a little, mixed with white rice. Can't afford to go full kibbles for 6 large dogs.

Average biljack 13kg RM280+ last for 1.5 month,
Local brand dog food 8kg RM70+ a month
White rice 2 packs a month roughly RM80

Treats RM30-50 month
Supplement, on and off depends on their condition, average RM50 a month

Shampoo and conditional, 1/4 bottle a month, about RM20

Vaccination 70+ per dog annually

Anti flea med, giving them twice a year, about RM80 per dog

As for my cat, brits renal about RM190 for 5kg, last for 3 months, so about RM60 for food.

Tofu little about RM50 a month

He had kidney condition, required to take long term medication. About RM11 a day, so RM330 a month

I'm feeding the dogs outside my house everyday, in my kampung. There have around 7-10 dogs. 1 pack of cheapest brand dog food 15kg a month, RM 80

I think I spent too much on my pets, I don't have any children.
After listing all above, I'm too afraid to sum it up to know my monthly spending on pets...
