I made this mistake myself before, got one time I offer my friend  McD Beefburger when he came to my place, at that split moment I forgot he is Hindu. He said he is Hindu and can't eat beef. I instantly apologized and offered him McNugget instead.

This whole incident never affected our friendship as it's an honest mistake.

The moment my well educated M friend jumped on bandwagon in FB saying how dare kay kay mart do this disrespectful thing on purpose, boycott je ,  I realized its hopeless.. if even the creme of the people think like this, I wonder how the less educated think, maybe worse than calling for boycott.
