In my 30+ years of working with electricity, every A/C fan motor I have come across have been Induction Motors without carbon brushes, I have yet to see an A/C ceiling fan with a universal motor till today. Could you please name me one model that uses universal motors?

Yes you are right.

The bad capacitor can be due to AC spike in your house or reverse voltage produced by the fan coil. Usually it considered at 2x AC voltage but most capacitor in shop has rating of 450V. If you can find the 500V, then it would have longer lifetime.

Boss, you sure you supposed to reply to me? tongue.gif
I'm calling out that other poster who sounds like a salesperson trying to promote their D/C fans, and so they are spreading bad information about A/C fans to confuse people.

Hi bro, thanks for correcting me. I am trying to learn on types of motor.

AC Motor: Induction Motor
DC Motor: Brushed DC Motor (with Carbon Brush?)
BLDC Motor: Brushless DC Motor
Correct me if I was wrong. Thanks.

I was seeing a pump motor in water heater using carbon brush, thus I thought it was AC motor, and thinking of similar motor was used in ceiling fan.

I am not seller / representative of any BLDC Ceiling Fan brand. I see many countries started to use BLDC Ceiling Fan, but Malaysia market still very slow in promoting BLDC Ceiling Fan (and set it at high price range), thus I did a study on the energy consumption and trying to understand the benefits of using BLDC Motor. For India market, they can sell a BLDC Ceiling Fan below MYR$200, with bi-directional rotation and speed up to 400rpm (5-Star Energy rating set at <35W @ 350rpm). While Malaysia ceiling fan generally set rotation speed between 90rpm to 300rpm (up to 80W, depends on types of motor used).

Let's continue discussion and share knowledge. Thank you.

Then you shouldn't have made the statement like you are an expert at it. You create FUD for readers when you post misinformation, considering that the TS is trying to get information about ceiling fans.

But here's the thing - I don't think you are a layperson learning and contributing.

Alpha and Deka offered many choices, but in term of reliability, they are always having spoilt CBB capacitor (especially AC Motor Fan, unable to control speed or the speed becomes very slow).
A layperson only thinks of the capacitor that controls the fan speed, while you know to say the type "CBB" capacitors.

Bro, you must be strong supporter of AC Fan. No offence, AC Fan is cheap and function as it is.

Sorry, I said I am learner on types of motor, doesn't means I dont know about basic electronics.

I know about "CBB" capacitor because I fixed it before, not to mention such info is available online easily.

Nope, this is not about me. Since I correct the misinformation, I am a supporter of A/C motor fan? That's the logic of a 5 y.o.

Impressive pictures! Since you already opened a fan to make repairs, how many carbon brushes did you find? Was it the same as the water pump that had carbon brushes in the heater that you looked at?

Feel free to reply, but I'm going to get back on topic for any further addition to this thread.

Maybe can consider KHIND? I think it matches the criteria you want perfectly, it has LED light & has low noise operation due to BLDC. Varies in colours too.

"There are 3 kinds of lies: Lies, damned lies, and statistics." I decided to read the "research paper" quoted, and unfortunately I found some discrepancies. I post an image without any text edits, but with it slightly shortened.
