Hi all,

I will be having a virtual interview soon with a company that is in the same industry.

Would like some advice on what are the do’s and don’t when a hiring manager is asking about why you’re leaving your current position 😊

don't ever talk bad about your current company. You can state other reasons for leaving such as want to learn new things or seeking for better pay.

Other than that, research the company you're interviewing for and find out what is the thing that you like from that company. And explain that you want to leave your current company because you are seeking for this one thing that you like from that company. Example, if the company's location is nearer to your house, you can use that as your reason to leave the current company, to save time and cost of commuting

Appreciate your advice and insights 🙏🏻

Hiring managers really won’t mind if you tell them that you’re looking for higher pay? As you mentioned

You can say whatever you want.... there is no right or wrong.... hiring manager is also just another human...

They would understand if you are looking for a job because you want higher pay...

Whatever you do... just don't bullshit or lie.... cause unless you are a pathological liar... they could easily catch whether you are talking nonsense or trying to hide something...

Don't say you did this or that but in actual fact you didn't actually do those things.... I've caught a lot of low-mid level position candidate trying to sell themselves like they are doing senior manager work but actually just assist to process a couple of cases.... very easy for me to find out by drilling them deeper cause they only know the surface stuff but don't know the technicality of the work..

It is OK to talk bad about your current company.... but by talking bad.... I don't mean talking shit about your colleagues.... you can highlight the flaws such as processes and what you think it should have been.... that shows you are a critical thinker and most hiring manager would also appreciate honesty rather than just generic interview answers.....

Remember.... hiring manager is just a human like you and me.... just put yourself in their shoe....

How long have you been staying in the current job?
Did they raise your salary?
Give more context before advise

I've been staying at the current job for 2 years.

Have not talked about salary yet but yes I do expect a raise in the company.

Just position yourself in a way that you are looking for a fresh challenge in the new role. Tell him more about the excitement you see in the new role, like handling logistics system, you can see that the system plays a vital role for the business itself. There are many more things you can talk about. Salary perspective, growth, environment, etc...

By the way , what role are you applying to?

Thank you for the advice but I’ve already done the interview 😅

I’m not sure if I did well but I’ll just hope for the best that I do get the offer.

Copywriter role 😊

Just an update

I've managed to get a second and final interview with the HOD smile.gif

Would there be anything in particular that they would ask?

Thanks again

They would probably ask you some questions about what genre of movie you like to watch, what you usually do over the weekend, things like that.

Also, please prepare to describe more about your knowledge in that industry niche, how you research in that topic, what style is your writing, how you engage more readers, things like that.

Thanks for both your replies, truly appreciate it.

I've done it already, I wouldn't say it was good nor if it was bad.

Oh well, we'll just wait and see

yeah ditto on that, never talk about your current company, even if what you say is factual and widely accepted, doesn't reflect well on you as a candidate.

You give the reason enlarge your network, learning new thing and of course better pay. When I interview a candidate for non-freshy I will expect him to give me a reason to look for better pay. Because I know I can expect more from him if our company hire him since he got better paid than former company.
