I am pretty sure TM Unifi will reply back feedback to MCMC and government and demand them to revert back their action of this DNS Hijacking
*
Too early to say if this is the end. I don't think they will revert completely despite the blunder. Fahmi really wants to push this out and didn't back down when he was interviewed earlier.

For sure they won't U turn. They spent months working on this, possibly as early as April/May and the ISPs spent a lot of money on the servers to block the 3rd party DNS.

I think they are just going to try to soften the backlash or try to make it look like it's a non-issue.

Best we can hope for is they leave DoT and/or DoH alone for the time being as those have legitimate security uses as well.

I wonder how well this blanket hijack on the generic port will turn out. We're the consumers still have the option to encrypt via doh, dot, dnscrypt, vpn, tor, proxy etc but problem is legacy hardware out there used by business. I bet theres still plenty of legacy server, modem, router, payment gateway chucked in a basement somewhere, can't use modern encryption protocol but rely on plaintext port 53 for simple curl api call etc. They aren't being decommissioned yet since its still works, monetary constraints, workforce constraints to maintain etc.. Those will be fcked hard if they suddenly fail at 11am on a busy day.

And as usual typical bolehland gov, implement dulu dialog kemudian.
*
Dialog is just for show and the report will come out that 'we have reassured the businesses they won't be affected and they confided their trust in us' or something along those lines.

They are going forward with this no matter what because how else will they show that they have enough power to make Meta, X, Google and so on comply with their licensing?

Most people don't even know what is DNS
*
QUOTE(OKLY @ Sep 7 2024, 07:25 PM)
Yes this is a fact. Most people only need their Internet to be working and able to access whatever websites they want.
*
Which then begs the question: if not that many people even use 3rd party DNS to bypass blocks and most just surf mainstream sites using ISP DNS, what's wrong with leaving 3rd party ones alone? Why have to go as far as whacking DoT and DoH as well?

I know most people here know the answer, but just saying.

The majority only does not care until one day FB, X, YouTube, Instagram or whatever big socmed gets banned. Then all of a sudden these people will U turn and cannot trust government?

Malaysia style 'as long as it don't affect me' is topkek.

This whole thing feels like a sham without proper regulatory framework, lack of transparency and communication to the general public.

This would discourage foreign firms to invest in Malaysia especially for tech or Web 3.0.
*
Malaysian authorities and transparency are like oil and water.

Also you really can't expect them to work hard like the EU internet regulating bodies when they can justify any ban with 'foreign website will never acknowledge us. dapat request ban je terus' and then go out for their lunch.

ISPs punya lawyers pun satu.......takde yang soal ke?

Means there are probably people in ISPs and TM especially who share the same interest as those in MCMC and govt.. That's why TM went the extra mile.

They really don't see the problem with what they are doing at all. And now that people are bringing up that there might actually a problem, the best way they see to get around it is to convince people that there is, indeed, no problem. No one attends their meet session, no problem lor. Proceed with hijacking DNS again.

I suspect some other powerful people in Cabinet are in on this as well (hint hint, those who have responded to media about the social media licensing and kill switch), so don't be surprised to see some law amendment that makes it legal for MCMC to order DNS hijacking or force everyone to use ISP DNS without public consultation in the near future.

There is no law to compel or force people to use ISPs or MCMC DNS either.

The artstation fiasco is a good example.
Artstation was blocked simply because someone filed a report against it. Moreover it is instruction of KPDN?
Even though artstation has mechanism for reporting and removal of copyrighted content, MCMC simply blanket block the entire website.

I thought for a website blocking to happen, one should obtain an injunction or court order to do so? A due process.
*
'It's the internet so just ban first'

Maybe the same goons who blanket banned Steam over one game the moment whichever minister ordered it about 8 years ago.

And this is why it's difficult to trust any government agency. Especially one that regulates internet usage.

They brand all the concerns as maklumat palsu. So anyone talking about it must be straight up spreading fake news.
*
Dakwaan palsu and dakwaan tidak tepat, so not quite the same I believe.

That is just 'false claims' and 'inaccurate claims'.

Same with the people here who want to ban TikTok.

It's a hint that they'd do the same if they were in power. We already know what kind of people they are.

That's the sad part. On the subject of internet, both sides actually sama je: a bunch of people who think 'the less of the internet there is to access, the better things would be for everyone.'

I refuse to believe they don't know. Every telco got the memo right. When I first tested Celcom, they did everything to the dot. UDP 53, all addresses, nothing else.

TM network is huge, if people there are this incompetent, I think it would have fallen apart by now. For whatever shit they pulled, ini semua kerja orang gila...
*
I don't want to say too much because this is not the place for it, but you understand that a large number of people in Malaysia believe wholeheartedly in moral policing.

This is part of the reason why there are many out there who counter this DNS issue on socmed with 'good lah they blocked people from consuming prawn,' or the earlier '3rd party DNS = golongan penjenayah.'

So if the one who ordered this in TM knew, they went into this fully believing they were correct. They probably still do believe they are correct in going that far, just that it might not have been worth the damage done.

They are not from the industry and yet speaking as if they are sane. This will do only more harm than good. Why are they "legalizing" cyber attack? shakehead.gif

The way moving forward is always user education, not the "protective barrier" imposed by someone who clearly didn't think of the hefty consequences as demonstrated in the past few days.
*
To them, they believe they ARE sane. So yeah.

And yes, definitely agree that awareness is key. Might not get immediate results but at least you don't open the door for people to bring us down to China level internet in the future.

This one talk only.

You've seen PH where most if not all their members when in opposition were strongly against increased censorship. Now suddenly most of them not saying or doing shit against this.

Hard to say if that would be the case for this person or people in TM if they succeed.

Remember Malaysians' response to censorship is different because there is also the layer of one of the 3Rs on top of it.

Good, but people shouldn't stop there. Keep going.

Make sure the message is loud and clear that no government - not now, not in the future - can ever hold that much power over internet access, no matter what their reason is.

Now they should ask those companies that come to their meet to help sponsor internet safety ad campaigns for the vulnerable.

More parents need to know what they can do to keep kids safe from things like prawn, and 3rd party DNS that have adult content filters can actually help with that while being more difficult for the kids to bypass.

Auntie Uncle who are vulnerable to scam? Identify what form of media they are using the most and send them reminders and messages. Cannot just do once and leave them be because they will forget (as is the case with some of my family members).

Yes. Mustn't become complacent because they 'listened' this time. The coming kill switch should be viraled on socmed next to show that this isn't the end of it. That also should bantah all the way.

If people were scared of DNS hijacking, controlling socmed should be equally scary or worse. This time cannot even say that 'lol u just want to watch prawn' because it involves all the sites and services the majority use.

*
Like the others said, it's just that: a kill switch. If at any time government deems online spread of information is disadvantageous to them or can 'threaten national security', they can simply switch off the internet.

Granted, there are 2 versions of this kill switch that we've heard of: some outlets report it as a 'social media killswitch' and some report it as 'internet kill switch.'

Both are obviously extremely damaging to the entire country. No situation justifies turning off access to information or the internet as a whole in 2024.

I suppose they're building the legal framework to legalize their future actions?

No apply SM lesen. No cooperation to delete "detrimental" content.
Then we reserve the right to block MYians access to their site/app?
*
Possibly. All we can do right now is speculate but it's surely yet another way to control internet access.

Their target, again, are scammers, pedos, etc..

This kill switch is being worked on by 3 ministers including Gobind and advisors from EU, I believe. But I don't have high hopes for it to come out favorably la.

Yes. For sure they would not want to affect businesses and travelers.

I think the second situation I mentioned is more likely where it is a kill switch for non compliant social media platforms.
