Nah. You can use either one just don't put as much as you would on a front load.
These are mentioned in the manual.
Where got salesperson explain stuff anymore.

for me, top or side load today...i just use liquid and not powder anymore
because the powder type will accumulate and dry up and clog it(encounter last time)
