https://www.sinchew.com.my/?p=5111575some key points from chinese paper interview:
Deepavali weekend coming, hotel booking less than 10%
Langkawi tourism association CEO blame netizen spread news say langkawi expensive, mislead people to switch to hatyai.
Many 3star hotel and guesthouse and restaurants closing down due to continuos bad business, rental car have to sell their cars off
Duty shop owner say not enough ferry trips schedule from kedah to island, last time weekend at least ten tour busses visit his shop now not even one
Aloft hotel manager say direct flights from china, qatar not resumed after covid, hope it can resume, also blames falling ringgit and expensive low cost air ticket for the lack of local tourists
Wow, this much worse than I thought. Hotel bookings less than 10%. Duty free shop not a single tour group.
State of economic is really bad and hurting. Who can afford the ferry ticket of nearly RM50 theses days? Would cost 200-250 in ferry ticket alone for a small family.
Drove from PD to Tk Kemang last Sunday, some condo/hotel were looking unkempt and abandoned.

Added... I don't think these 2 facts can be related off handedly. If people says Langkawi is expensive, don't mean going to Hatyai and elsewhere in southern thai is less expensive.
The surge at the border crossings can be due to 2 years of lockdown and people crossing because of personal reasons like visting relatives, seeking blessings in temples, getting married (2nd wife

... etc. etc.
