Chinese Automaker Geely Ups Its Stake in U.K.'s Aston Martin
The Chinese parent company to Volvo, Polestar, Lotus and others is now Aston Martin's third-largest shareholder.

Geely doubles its stake in Aston Martin to 17% at a cost of £234 million ($291 million), giving it a non-executive seat on the board and extending its financial influence over the British sports car maker.

The move makes the Chinese automaker the third-largest shareholder in Aston Martin, behind the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, which commands an 18% shareholding, and the Yew Tree Consortium, currently Aston Martin's largest shareholder at 21%.

Geely’s stake places it ahead of Mercedes-Benz in the shareholding structure of Aston Martin.

Geely purchased 42 million shares from the Lawrence Stroll-controlled Yew Tree Consortium and was issued 28 million new shares in the deal announced May 18.


Stroll (pictured, below left), a Canadian billionaire businessman, is executive chairman of Aston Martin and owner of the Aston Martin F1 Team.

Geely says the increased shareholding will provide Aston Martin with an additional £95 million ($159 million) in funding.

As part of stipulations tied to the deal, Geely has agreed to acquire no more than 22% of Aston Martin before August 2024 unless it makes a formal offer that is endorsed by the Aston Martin board.

The Chinese automaker can also increase its stake in the British luxury marque if a third party, not acting in the interests of Geely, announces a formal offer for Aston Martin.

The Yew Tree Consortium has agreed not to buy or sell any ordinary shares in Aston Martin for the next 90 days and will not exceed a 25% stake in the company until August 2024.

Revenue at Aston Martin grew 26% to £1.35 billion ($1.67 billion) last year, largely because of price increases. Its core average per-unit selling price in 2022 rose 18% to £177,000 ($219,400).


The British company reported an adjusted operating loss of £118 million ($146.3 million) for the year ended Dec. 31, 2022.

Known throughout its storied history for sports cars. Aston Martin’s best selling model today is the DBX SUV.

In February 24, 2018, Geely Group acquired a 9.69% stake in Daimler AG, becoming its largest shareholder with nearly $9 billion.


This rapid expansion under Li Shufu's leadership significantly increased his wealth, estimated at $110 billion in 2017 alongside his son Li Xingxing.


Geely's high-profile moves and Li Shufu's visible role in the media spotlight have led to speculations about his family, especially regarding his wife, whose name was revealed in 2018.


Li Shufu's ties with Xi Jinping, China's president, have also been subject to public scrutiny. Reports suggest that Xi had shown support for Geely during his tenure in Zhejiang, where Geely was the only car manufacturer, and during subsequent visits to car expos.



The company's expansion overseas, notably the acquisition of Volvo Cars, took place during Xi's official visits abroad, further fueling speculation about high-level support for Geely despite the strict scrutiny of other Chinese conglomerates in overseas acquisitions.



The alleged connections between Li Shufu and Xi Jinping, especially regarding the latter's supportive visits to Geely-related events or facilities, have sparked discussions about the company's resilience in overseas acquisitions, contrasting with the fate of other Chinese conglomerates like


Anbang Group, HNA Group, and Wanda Group, which faced sell-offs and regulatory takeovers.





After the arrival of Geely 4.0, the comprehensive implementation of the CMA platform became widespread, with models like the Geely Star Yue and Star Rui utilizing this platform. Consequently, the platform advantage once held by Lynk & Co faded away.

Before this, Lynk & Co was positioned as a "budget Volvo," but with Geely making the Geely brand an even more budget-friendly version of Volvo, it led to internal competition between their own products.



Proton now become "Budget Volvo".....

Shame on those people. Always kecam proton 3 cylinder but its okay with perodua ativa and axia 3 cylinders

I own X50 and i tested Ativa extensively from my family member

Conclusion is for X50, the vibration inside is suppressed tremendously.
My car already 2 years old. Still no problem with mounting. Hardly feel any vibration inside either at steering wheel or pedal

Ativa meanwhile has poor insulation
From inside, can feel vibration on the pedal quite bad. Steering wheel will judder from time to time

So yeah. Proton 3 cylinder is better than perodua 3 cylinder

Go Proton showroom test drive X50 yourself. Most X50 test drive unit should be at least 2-3 years old now. My experience is my CBU X70 mounting need change after 3-4 years only. When I test drive X50 can feel vibration in back seat.

We have Proton EV way before all this, Proton management didn't push for production. DCT? Already obsolete in consumer car when VW and Ford already moving away from DCT and Toyota Honda choose CVT. We were supposed to get Jatco CVT and TGDI engine built with McLaren engine supplier before Geely cancel the project, engine is already ready to go. Autonomous is no big deal at all la nowadays, even Perodua these days also got Level 2. Just ask supplier like Bosch to supply.

My unwavering belief stands in the attainability of Proton's monthly sales target of 2000 units of the S70.

DCT are expansive, hence many manufacturers just cut cost for production and choose CVT, especially the Japanese brand. VW and Ford take or use normal torque converter auto, they dont choose CVT. For Chinese car brand in general, the base spec use DCT wet clutch and more premium brand of them use 8-10 gear normal auto torque converter, which both are miles better than CVT.

For TGDI proton plan, all only on paper or planning process, long process before production, cut cost, etc. Doubt we get the best of all considering only sell for how many units locally, bring ROI? Else we retain back the Campro for another decade.

Autonomous is big thing, related to safety, plenty of testing, r&d. P2 take the Daihatsu model not asking Bosch as that.
