Hereen Street,

Initially called Heeren Street, this narrow street was renamed Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

Recently, I revisited the 2008 Singaporean drama 'Little Nyonya.'

It tells a beautiful story about a wealthy businessman who is a Baba in Melaka marrying a servant, and they have a daughter.

I just realized that such situations actually occurred in the 1930s, not just in stories.

"The Little Nyonya" (Chinese: 小娘惹; Pinyin: Xiǎo Niángrě) is a Chinese mainland television drama series produced by iQiyi and Singapore's Mediacorp in 2020.

The show features an ensemble cast including Xiao Yan.

This series is a remake of the 2008 Singaporean version of "The Little Nyonya" produced by Mediacorp. The drama first aired on June 5, 2020, on the Dongfang TV channel and later on June 28, 2020, on CCTV-8 and iQiyi.

That is what I found people said about peranakan:

"
In my limited interactions with the Peranakan or Straits Chinese, I've noticed distinctions among them.

Those in Penang seem to have stronger Hokkien Chinese influences and can be less distinguishable from the regular Chinese population.

In contrast, the Peranakan in Melaka appear to be more integrated with the Malays and often use Malay in their households.

Beyond their delectable cuisine, what sets them apart from the average working-class Chinese is their inclination towards a more Westernized and cosmopolitan cultural perspective.

Looking back historically, it was the affluent, politically-aware, and Western-educated Straits Chinese who played pivotal roles in the country.

The elites in organizations like the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) originally hailed from the Straits Chinese community before being replaced by the more numerous nationalist Chinese figures.

"

Peranakan cuisine or Nyonya cuisine comes from the Peranakans, descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in

Penang, Malacca, Singapore and Indonesia, inter-marrying with local Malays.

In Baba Malay, a female Peranakan is known as a nonya (also spelled nyonya), and a male Peranakan is known as a baba.

The cuisine combines Chinese, Malay and other influences”

Occupations and trade

Many of the early Peranakans were entrepreneurial traders and shopkeepers. A significant number were also involved in the

real estate, shipping and banking sectors.

As most of the Peranakans received an English education and were fluent in the language, many of them were appointed by the British authorities as community and civic leaders.

Associations
Like many other communities, the Peranakans formed their own associations to advance the welfare of their community. In 1900, several key Straits-born leaders of the Chinese community, namely

Tan Jiak Kim, Seah Liang Seah, Lim Boon Keng (Dr) and Song Ong Siang, came together to form the Straits Chinese British Association (SCBA).

Besides looking after the interests of the Peranakan community, the SCBA initially also had a political agenda: to promote interest in the British Empire and loyalty to the Queen.

The SCBA is today known as the Peranakan Association.

Places

Historically, groups of Peranakans resided in several different locations, notably the Neil Road, Tanjong Pagar, Emerald Hill( near orchard road ) and the Joo Chiat, Katong areas.

Bubur Cha Cha (Nyonya Coconut Milk Dessert)

Nyonya Sweet Broth (Pengat)

https://malaysia.news.yahoo.com/mco-2-0-no-...pF0pznfuwPSErec

Unlike the Bubur Cha Cha which is available in dessert shops, the pengat is usually made in Penang Baba Nyonya homes or served for special occasions.

“We will then serve the pengat to our deities by 12 noon,” he said.

Yeoh, however, said that although the dish is a passed-down delicacy, there are new ingredients that his mother has added such as the black-eyed beans and sago jelly.

“But the basic components of the pengat remain the same which are the different types of tubers, pisang raja, sugar, fresh santan and pandan leaves.

“We also steam each type of tuber separately to prevent cross-contamination of their colours.”

Yeoh said that for this year, many of his non-Baba Nyonya friends have already asked him for the dessert.

Some of the typical dishes that would be served are the

Curry Kapitan (dry curry chicken),

Inche Kabin (Nyonya fried chicken),

Jiu Hu Char (stir fry jicama and cuttlefish),

Lor Bak (fried meat rolls),

Hong Bak (braised pork with aromatic spices),

Gulai Tumis (tamarind fish curry), and

Sambal Udang (prawn sambal).

“However, my family’s Curry Kapitan is slightly sweeter and less spicy than those from other Penang families because my mother who is Kelantanese-Peranakan prefers sweeter flavours.

“But our family will also cook our signature pig stomach soup that is cooked with chicken, abalone, and lotus seeds.”

Peranakan Straits design concept for the total 194 acres of land orbits around the theme of “Peranakan Nostalgia”.

The development is comprised of a total of 168 units, presenting a variety of double-storey linked villas and semi-detached homes.

The essence of Penang and Melaka brings the theme of heritage buildings, that create a warm and wholesome atmosphere. Thus, Peranakan Straits has inherited the said style with the innovations and modern interpretations of a heritage based theme.

Some of the homes featured in this phase mirror the architecture used during the construction of heritage shop houses, some of which are even more than 100 years old.

Prospective buyers interested to be proud owners of the homes featured within Peranakan Straits, can choose from four different layouts within this precinct which include

Azula and Ophelia Link Villas and

Emeria and Elia Semi-Detached homes.

Out of the 168 homes offered, 74 homes are designed for those who prefer larger garden spaces built upon land areas that are 36ft by 80ft respectively.

All homes within Peranakan Straits provide four-plus-one bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and 4 car parking spaces each with built-ups that range between 2,292sq ft and 2,797sq ft.

As of now, the units available in this parcel include bumi units in Azula and Ophelia, selling from RM888,000.

The landscaping surrounding this development equally implements the Peranakan style, which truly adds a unique touch to this modern property however, what really attracts buyers to the township is the environment that it is nestled within creating an ideal destination for modern family living.

Buyers that showed interest to be a part of Peranakan Straits then prior to its launch, began registering long before the actual launch date as many were attracted to its unique facade.

In addition, the fact that the expanse is located strategically but away from the hustle and bustle of the city is the key aspect attracting droves of homeowners to the expanse.

Peranakan Straits within Setia Eco Templer is sold between RM888,000 and RM1,643,000 depending on the type of home purchased. These homes also experience added tranquility as it is located next to S P Setia’s Balinese concept homes dubbed Amantara.

To the delight of those that enjoy the finer things that life offers, a clubhouse is accessible to residents providing amenities such as an Olympic sized pool, gardens, a lake, outdoor recreation area and even a ballroom.

Peranakan has multiple play areas scattered across its vicinity, as it is built with family in thought. Some of the facilities that can be found here include commercial lots, a gym as well as multiple walking routes encircling garden and lakes.

The development is secured by 24-hour security measures and separate gated and guarded areas for individual phases.

Peranakan is supported by a commercial hub in the vicinity known as The Grove @ Templer offering 40 shop office units, out of which 22 units have been sold.

32 units within this parcel are presented as 3-storey shophouse units with built-ups ranging between 4,921 sq ft and 7,262 sq ft while the balance units are crafted as 2-storey units with built areas ranging between 2,996 sq ft and 4,350 sq ft.

My grandmother says that for this dish, it's best to use a stone mortar for the dried shrimp.

However, if you don't have a stone mortar or want to save time, using a food processor to crush them is also acceptable.

Her method involves first sautéing the dried shrimp bits in a little oil until fragrant; she says this truly brings out the aroma of the dried shrimp.

Finally, she mixes the sautéed dried shrimp bits with the sautéed sambal.

Although this adds an extra step, the flavor of the dried shrimp is indeed more aromatic.

Most Peranakan moved to Penang/SG in the last decade, you can see the increasing influence and food sold there. In Malaysia, I am afraid only Melaka is the only place left and even that is lesser due to increasing racism and Islamization. Note that despite marrying Malays, Peranakans are not Muslims as required by "law" in the past.

**Occupations** Early Peranakans were often involved in trading, real estate, shipping, and banking. They received an English education and held civic leadership roles.
**Associations** Peranakans formed associations, such as the Peranakan Association, to promote community welfare and loyalty to the British Empire.
**Places** Historical Peranakan communities were located in areas like Neil Road, Tanjong Pagar, Emerald Hill, and Joo Chiat/Katong.

You are correct.

There were rumors that Peranakan people were included in the Bumiputera category and entitled to a 15% discount when buying a house in the 1950s or 1960s.

However, I'm not sure if this was removed in 1970 or at some other point in time.

The JPN may no longer classify Peranakan as Bumiputera.

Does your girlfriend still have Peranakan costumes?

Do her parents' birth certificates list their race as Baba/Nyonya?

Do they also cook Peranakan food?

For over 500 years, some people argue that despite time passing, there's still a perception that certain groups haven't fully integrated into society based on subjective criteria.

Make pengat and cook traditional Baba Nyonya dishes

Pengat, a popular Penang Nyonya dessert is usually made and served in the **** morning of Chap Goh Meh *******

for most Penang Baba Nyonya families.

Peter Yeoh, a sixth generation Baba from Penang, said that the pengat is similar to Bubur Cha Cha but the ingredients used for both desserts are not entirely the same.

Pengat made from a variety of ingredients including gula melaka, pandan leaves and brown sugar and served on festive occasions. —

“Ingredients such as bananas, gula melaka, pandan leaves, and brown sugar are used in pengat which makes it a very rich and authentic delicacy.

We will then serve the pengat to our deities by ******12 noon********,” he said.

Means before 12 noon?

Yeoh, however, said that although the dish is a passed-down delicacy, there are new ingredients that his mother has added such as the black-eyed beans and sago jelly.

Baba Nyonya, Cheng Wei Da: "Lantern Festival is a significant celebration for us Chinese.

The main ingredients include yam, sweet potatoes in various colors – red, purple, and yellow, representing vibrant and auspicious hues.

Additionally, bananas and glutinous rice cakes signify continuous prosperity.

The migration and non-Muslim are originally not a factor to become Bumi/Peranakan. It was simply love between two races back in Melaka. When the NEP started then Arab-isation by Anwar in UMNO decades back, then only the requirement of Bumis = Malays + muslims are set. If the current definition of Bumis are being imposed back in the old days, Sabah, Sarawak and many alliances will cease to be since they won't want that kind of unfair arrangement.

This is why it is important for Malays to learn their own history, no matter whether it's bad or good. FYI bumi definition is set in Cons, but the NEP and the benefits/social status were granted outside the constitution, circumventing the need of Parliament approval.

In my case, my father's and mother's grandparent was from china. Landed here and lived in malay majority area.

Peter Yeoh, a sixth generation Baba from Penang, said that the pengat is similar to Bubur Cha Cha but the ingredients used for both desserts are not entirely the same.

Unlike the Bubur Cha Cha which is available in dessert shops, the pengat is usually made in Penang Baba Nyonya homes or served for special occasions.

“We will then serve the pengat to our deities by 12 noon,” he said.

Must be 12 noon before?
Are you also 6th generation Baba ?

But your ancestor sure have at least 1 generation married malay right?

Every hokkien living in the city has access to them, my neighbor grows it in abundance, I just ask her for the ones she dried if I’m making kuih.

Funny hearing nyonya auntie speaking in mandarin. Growing up in my grandma’s place, it’s either hokkien or malay plus Siamese (southern dialect). The whole row of houses at Melaka Str in Pg were mostly Peranakan chinese. Behind at Seang Teik rd was Jho Low’s hse and futher down was where Alleycats grew up.

Recipe of Bubur Cha Cha

Yan and sweet potato must be cut into very small pieces.

Like outside dessert stall....

Black-eyed beans (black-eyed peas) 50 gm
Tapioca pearls (sago pearls) 50 gm
Boiling water 1 liter (plus more for beans and pearls)
Rock sugar or coconut sugar 120 gm (finely chopped, or to taste)
Coconut cream 1½ cup (or to taste)
Pandan leaves 3 (must tight a knot, do not just put inside pot) later easy to remove when finish cooked

**Step** **Instructions**
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**1. Prepare Black-Eyed Beans** Rinse and drain black-eyed beans. Soak in boiling water, covered, for 15 to 20 minutes. Drain and boil in a large pot until softened (20-30 minutes). Set aside.
**2. Prepare Tapioca Pearls** Soak tapioca pearls for 10 minutes. Drain and cook in boiling water, covered, until it boils again. Remove from heat, keep the lid on, and let residual heat cook for 10 minutes. Drain through a fine sieve, rinse with cold water, and set aside.

**4. Prepare Coconut Milk Base** In a large pot, add 1 liter of boiling water and rock sugar. Bring to a boil. Add pandan leaves, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes. Pour in coconut cream. Once it boils again, remove and discard pandan leaves.
**5. Combine Ingredients** Add sweet potatoes, black-eyed beans, and tapioca pearls to the pot. Ensure rock sugar is dissolved. Adjust sweetness if needed.
**6. Serve** Serve hot or chill in the fridge for a cold option.

For you to be called peranakan, must be someone who married a local i.e. Malay. I don't know how many generations down the road for you, but you are misinformed. The culture and dishes of peranakan is 50/50 malay+chinese. Why are you claiming differently, when the definition of Peranakan is already set in stone as mixed?

You are partly correct as many Chinese who married malays did not convert like my grandma’s neighbor in Pg and babas in Melaka. Most of my grandma’s neighbors and friends living along Macalister Rd used to meet up and made kuihs and esp b4 CNY made kueh kapit, kuih bankit and I had to fold them along with other kids.

It’s not chinese born and bred in the straits settlement that become Babas but culture assimilation through marriage and birth. Pg also had Serani/Eurasians that married chinese Babas and spoke local dialect while cooking local Baba cuisine while either practicing dual religions.

I went to school with Theseiras and Rozells and we cursed in hokkien more than English or Malay while being fluent in those languages and some in Portuguese too.

Could you please specify when we should add salt?

Is it after adding yam, gold sweet potato, purple sweet potato, and sago to the soup?

Cos too many other Cina here. That's the main issue. It makes the Malays feel threatened. If Cina a lot less here, you won't see so much racism today...

This is a Chinese custom and practice, right?

My family follows it too.

Now that I've bought a 100% natural latex pillow, I won't have this kind of issue anymore.

On the morning of Li Chun, you should take your pillows and blankets out to bask in the sun. This practice is about absorbing sunlight into your pillows and blankets.

So the good energy will go to your pillow.

Good luck will naturally come your way.

The language of the Baba Chinese , popularly known as ' Baba Malay ' , therefore has its basis in the two relevant languages, Malay and Hokkien-Chinese , the latter because the first Chinese immigrants were in fact predominantly from the Hokkien-speaking province of Fukien in southern China .

useless fucker left my grandma for a mistress in Malacca. My mom and i never met him.

Then that bitch married a malay teacher, also got wife already. She birthed a son.

Then she was heart broken after divorce, a decent cina jual daging at the market married her until he died old age. She got two more sons.

See my family like rojak. Dunno those days people really get married or just piap piap and cabut.

My grandfather was 100% Penang Baba. He left my grandmother for a mistress in Malacca. My mom and I never met him.

*****The mistress********* then married a Malay teacher, who was already married. So she became the second wife of the teacher and gave birth to a son.

After a divorce that left her heartbroken, a decent Chinese butcher at the market married her, and they stayed together until he passed away of old age. She had two more sons with him.

My family is like a rojak. I don't know if people really got married in those days or just had casual relationships and left.

Sorry,I am confusing.

Is it the mistress married to a Teacher?

Or your grandmother?

The mistress married three times in her life ?

First, she was the mistress of your grandfather.

Then, she married a Malay teacher as his second wife and had a son with him.

After her divorce from the teacher, she married a Chinese butcher and had two more sons with him.

But Nasi lemak is enjoyed throughout Malaysia, where it’s considered a national dish, but it’s also common in Singapore and in other Southeast Asian countries with a sizeable Malay population.

Aside from making it at home, it’s something we need to have at least once on every return trip to Malaysia and Singapore. I just love all its different flavors and textures, especially that spicy sambal!

# Dish Name Buddha's Delight (Loh Hon Jai) ~
1 Date CNY Food
2 Description Buddha's Delight or 'Loh Hon Jai' is a popular vegetarian dish in Chinese and Buddhist cuisine. It consists of mixed vegetables and fungi. It's traditionally served on the first day of Chinese New Year, with vegetables chosen based on personal preference. My family loves it because it's not too oily and contains a variety of ingredients.
3 Ingredients - 500 gm cabbage
- 1/2 medium carrot, sliced
- 1 green capsicum, cut into wedges
- 40 gm glass noodles
- 8 gm cloud ears
- 50 gm fried beancurd skin
- 6 mushrooms
- 6 beancurd puffs, cut
- 1 piece ginger, smashed
- 1 1/2 pieces of nam yue (preserved red beancurd)
- 2 Tbsp vegetarian oyster sauce
- 2 tsp light soy sauce
- Sugar, salt to taste
- Sesame oil
- Cornstarch mixture to thicken

# Method
1 Soak the glass noodles in water to soften, but not too long. If too soft, they will become lumpy when cooked.
2 Soak the cloud ears to soften, discard the hard parts.
3 Soak the mushrooms to soften, stem and cut into halves.
4 In a wok, sauté the ginger with some oil. Add in the mushrooms, shallow fry, and add in the cabbage followed by the cloud ears.
5 Mix the nam yue and vegetarian oyster sauce into a paste and add to the vegetables. Add in salt, sugar, and light soy sauce. Add water, cover the lid, and simmer for about 20 minutes.
6 Toss in the carrot and green capsicum, followed by the glass noodles and beancurd puffs. Test for taste.
7 Toss in the fried beancurd skin and mix well.
8 Add in some cornstarch to thicken, and drizzle on some sesame oil. Serve.

This is typical Chinese dish especially for traditional Weddings & Chinese New Years.
Nyonya chap chai don't have capsicum, its ingredients are sweet cabbage, silky black or cloud fungus, woodsy lily bud, chewy tofu skin, and glass noodles.
Nyonya chap chai gravy taste different from Loh Hong Jai cos it has dried shrimp and balacan.

But usually Baba Nyonya vegetables dish for CNY is Jiu Hoo Char.

The Atlas Ice Group (“Atlas Ice”) was incorporated in 1912 in Malacca and being chiefly involved in block ice manufacturing.

According to Phuket Baba community

Phuket’s (known as Jung Cylon during 16th century) history as a tin-mining region attracted Siamese, Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians, and sea gypsies. A unique community formed by early unions between Hokkien tin-miners and Siamese women, known as the “Baba,” developed their own way of life, language, dress, and food. This heritage can be seen in Phuket’s Old Town, which is noted for Sino-Portuguese buildings.

QUOTE(plouffle0789 @ Jan 5 2025, 03:47 PM)
Does it mean a Chinese man from China came to Thailand and married a local Malay woman at 1900 era?

Hereen Street,

Initially called Heeren Street, this narrow street was renamed Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

High Street Centre opened in 1974. “It was very vibrant,” Gurnani recounts. “Many of the shops were family-owned, specialising in textiles and electronics.” High Street was Singapore’s main shopping belt in the 1950s and 1960s, and many Sindhi and Sikh merchants had set up their textile shops there.

Department stores like Chotirmall and Metro were once located on High Street.

The area around High Street Centre began to transform into Singapore’s Civic and Cultural District in the late 1990s.

The new Parliament House, officially opened in October 1999, sits opposite the High Street Centre.

# Malaysian Nyonya Kerabu Bee Hoon
**Source: Season with Spice**
**Servings: 4**

Category Ingredient Amount / Notes
-------------------------------------
Main Ingredients Rice vermicelli 200g
Medium or large prawns 12–14, shelled and deveined
Kaffir lime leaves 6 leaves (both segments), center spine removed, finely sliced
Lemongrass 3 stalks, white bottom part only, bruised and finely sliced
Shallots 12, thinly sliced
Garlic 2 cloves, minced
Torch ginger flower 2, finely sliced
Freshly grated coconut 2/3 cup
Dried shrimp 1/4 cup
Salt Pinch, or to taste

Category Ingredient Amount / Notes
-------------------------------------
Sambal Belacan Spice Blend Sambal Belacan 5 tbsp
Coconut sugar 1 tbsp
Calamansi lime juice Juice of 8–10 limes

Category Ingredient Amount / Notes
-------------------------------------
Garnish Mint leaves A handful, finely sliced
Red chili peppers Sliced
Calamansi lime Halved
Roasted unsalted peanuts Optional, coarsely ground
Fried shallots Optional

Step Method
--------------
1 Prepare kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, shallots, garlic and torch ginger flower. Combine in a large mixing bowl.
2 In a frying pan or wok, toast the grated coconut until browned. Add to the mixing bowl.
3 Soak the dried shrimps for 10 minutes, and then drain. Grind the shrimp with a food processor or pound in a mortar & pestle until coarsely ground. Then add to the wok, and toast for two minutes until fragrant and lightly browned. Transfer to the mixing bowl.
4 Blanch rice vermicelli for 1–2 minutes or cook according to the package. Transfer to a strainer and drain. Then add to the mixing bowl.
5 In a small bowl, prepare the sambal belacan spice blend, mixing well to ensure the sugar dissolves. Set aside.
6 In the wok, add 1 tbsp of oil, and pan-fry the prawns until cooked (or you can boil them in salt water for a couple of minutes). Add to the mixing bowl.
7 Toss all the ingredients in the bowl well to combine. Add garnishes, then dish out and serve immediately.

Notes
-------
1. Another version is Tom Yam style Kerabu Mee Hoon. Simply replace the sambal belacan spice blend with instant tom yam paste, and omit the toasted coconut.
2. You can also serve kerabu bee hoon cold, so no need to heat the leftovers.
