The 6500/7000 series is running sigma design's newer smp8635 chipset vs the em8623 chipset used in the 5100. that, and placebo effect.

User of synology and qnap here. just to share my observations.
(1) d/loading using these NAS as a BT client is painfully slow compared to say a pc-based client e.g. uTorrent. even if u port-fwd, assign fixed ip, open up upnp etc etc, also slow. i reckon the reason is that the client operates under linux (the NAS's operating system). (2) use WD Caviar Green hdd. they are very quiet. my TS-209 is running on seagates hdd and compared with the wd green in the TS-409, the diff in noise levels are very obvious. (3) the next generation of qnap will have built-in lcd and operating system, meaning u can operate and manage the nas without going thru a pc/notebook. this is useful but will also increase the cost/price. so if anyone wants to pick up a qnap, better get them now (existing models) before they are phased out and become more expensive. (4) my fav is the TS-409. very compact (small footprint) and "to the point". the new qnap AJAX interface, although now still in beta, shows lots of promise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjXUfovhamI (5) qnap is introducing it's own network media player/streamer called NMP-1000. google for more info. Not the right thread perhaps, but since u guys r talking about NAS. just my 2 cents. cheers. |

QUOTE(ozak @ Mar 17 2009, 02:10 PM) I m using these NAS for 100% 7/11 BT and yes, it is painfull slow if you on screamx line. After a few tweak and put it on maxis line, the speed is fast and 95% match my pc Utorrent speed. Mind sharing your tweaks. I'm not on streamyx, but I am on a 18mbps line. When I run both QNAP's QGet and Windows-based uTorrent, downloading the same file, the QNAP is about 1/10th of the speed on the uTorrent. sorry rx330 if this is OT. tumpang ya? |

Strictly for those with QNAP only: » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « This is waaay OT. Sorry rx330. To keep this relevant to the thread .... Dvico cantik hor? This post has been edited by terranova: Mar 17 2009, 06:31 PM |

Guys, thanks. Don't worry about my download speed. It's fine actually. I get 200 to 300 KB/s on average. It's just not that great on the QNAP, that's all.
Just to share info, I run 2 QNAPs simultaneously for d/loads. I've set 2 range of ports for each of the qnaps on the router as well as the qnap's server config correspondingly. First range is 6881-6940 and second range is 6941-6999. Anyway, like i said. Don't think it's my router or isp as I get good rates on other clients, just not on the qnap, even with protocol encryption enabled. Hopefully the next firmware update will improve this. Carry on talking about Dvico pls ..... before rx330 goes and buy something from k8118k. |

QUOTE(denhock @ May 1 2009, 06:55 PM) have always wondered what that does. its one of the settings in the router right? i thought it worked only on jumbo-compatible devices, which i have yet to see on any devices. what does that do? sorry i'm IT illiterate. |

QUOTE(rthj @ Jul 22 2009, 01:28 PM) hey terranova, i've decided on the synology rather than the qnap....and as you have already mentioned, the HDD sure fills up fast....i went with the 2bays.....maybe should think abt a 4 bays in the future. LOL. If running RAID 5, 4 bays makes more sense than 2 bays. Sorry to rub it in. Running RAID 5, 4 bays of 1TB each effectively gives u 3TB of storage space whereas 2 bays of 1TB only gives u 1TB of space (the other 1TB to mirror). Anyway, did u upgrade the synology to the latest firmware released last week? now supports DLNA and other new features. edit - the acer looks good. nice find.
