Hello /k!

I guess this topic is better geared towards the prev gen boomers/genX who admittedly went through a different type of Hell.

So after work, i reach home frustrated and unmotivated as always but I have taken steps to try and learn some programming...want to try my hand in IT by the mid of next year.

Issue is..i come home tired like setoberi, sure I can force myself to study (been doing that), but not very effective. What are your post-work trying to study tips?

Serious answers to help focus.

Thanks /k!

1) Use music as motivation / to improve your mood to study?
2) Do something that makes you happy first before studying.
3) Are you actually interested/passionate about programming, or is it just follow the crowd?

3. Nope at this rate none of my passions are going to pay the bills.

Yeah..my mental state totally barai that time. Now much better due to exercise+cutting off certain people...at least it looks that way

What kind of work so tiring?

Since you have time to /k, then use the time between work to learn your interest. This way you keep being motivated on both work and hobby by keep switching your mind between subject.

I learn VBA to ease my work during office time and able to get more free time by reducing about probably 80% my work load. Now I can do also other hobby working on Adruino project. Weekend I can do other things like woodwork too laugh.gif

Well i prepare a fkton of economic/business reports that i need to spend hours reading. When i come to /k, that usually means that I sudah giveup...and need time to breathe lmao.

TBH, i would do that..but office computer sudah block alot of things..Cannot install a compiler here..else can jalan. But without compiler can jalan x? unless i use those from w3school. But that is not the same as the actualy working environment i suppose right?

when you are tired, don't learn things that requires your brain power. you will find it hard to focus and then waste more time, especially in programming. I always tell ppl never code when you are tired, it just get messy and making bad solution.

Well, long reading is tiring even though not much of physical movement.

laugh.gif I forgot. One advantage that I have is that I have admin right that I can install and uninstall anything and anytime I wanted like certain IT people. Even managers/directors do not have this right laugh.gif I get IT guy give me Admin right. Otherwise it would be difficult for me to work because clients files are using many apps thus many different format. I need to find apps to be able to open and view.

Maybe you need to get close to IT guys. If not one audit your PC, then probably you can bypass the admin right using software to install apps laugh.gif

Working is not about salary, it's about your passion. You said you already tired and don't have the "motivation" to study after work, so I guess you don't have passion on this field.

Just FYI, I'm doing network security, I don't even reach your defined salary range within 4 years of working, but I always study after work and even on weekends, attend certification exams every 2-3 months, it's boring life and keep rinse and repeat. I dare not to say I have passion on this field but I'm still motivated to study after work...

a friend of mine does cyberscurity...within 3yrs he sudah earning 7k++. But he took a bunch of certs along the way, started working at age 30 without any prior experience.

I do not have a choice unfortunately, i need money to fix my life and other career's will force me to start at a salary of 2.6k or so (family commitment, parents and etc...so i got that nonsense to worry about)...even worse im 29, so those fresh grad jobs wont bother with me, i tried applying alot of places...probably closing 800 applications at this rate. So at this rate, i only know one thing.

passions wont put food on the table for me. Sales? well, i do not have that type of security to do sales lmao..so this is the last thing i can think of. My current industry is a super niche thing...as a trade officer to one of the embassies..so outside of my field, really macam no where to go at this rate. To make matters worse, the industry that I am in are slowly turning permanent staffs into contract staffs thanks to our political uncertainty..so pretty much no reason to stay in this line sudah and its just a matter of time before things get real sour.

If you passionate about something, you yourself will find way to do it

If u don’t look forward to it regardless how tired you are, stop kidding yourself and move on to something you are passionate about

For me fitness is my passion and no matter how fucked up my day was I will find time to do it.

If I can’t find it in myself, I will listen to David goggins podcast….a man that ran a marathon with bad cartilage is telling me to dig deep into myself. Always when I almost quit, goggin podcast give me strength.

Remember when u are in deep pain and can’t do it anymore, it’s only 40 percent of what you can achieved. There is 60 percent more to give

You don’t know me son…stay hard

You got interest in coding or just blinded with the reported salary figures?

If your determined enough you will sacrifice your sleep (i.e sleep and wake up early) and your weekends to achieve your goal.

Agreed, that's what I'm trying to say.

To TS, programming not really suitable for you based on observing your reply. It's really hard-core technical and really needed passionate. Ever thought of changing direction to Project Manager role instead? There are free course and gov sponsorship to study on project management.

What is your current job? Why want to enter IT? Do u know how streneous IT line is? Do u know how fucked up programmers life is? You see the money but the jobs are really fucked up.

Doesn't your current job have career progression?

If got career progression i wont be so bitter, got also very limited. The progression would be to join other embassies, trade department within this field. Vacancies are very far and few in between...worse yet thanks to our political climate, many are pulling back their funding. So if i stay here for another 2 years, probaby might get retreched or changed to a contract role.

Why? money lo...i mean im already miserable..might as well have money/career progression while im feeling that way VS to not having enough.

I see... looks like between a rock and a hard place.

Not sure how hectic the job of a trade officer is, but if it can always clock out at 6pm then it should be quite a routine and not hectic one. Then need to find the strength and motivation to move forward.

In terms of self study, maybe u can try to enroll in courses that have some form of structure or certification. Maybe can try to ask around OUM if they have such course. Structure is good so that you can have a goal in mind when u study. That way u will try to fight through any tiredness because there is a goal.

If cannot OUM, can also try those online courses like udemy. Most important is that u self study with a focus and goal in mind.

And u should know that IT line is going to be gruesome. If u cannot study after work, u will face problems when u really do the actual IT work.

damn, how u manage to get past the mindset of "i should be earning mani now"
i wanna study but theres a lot of opportunity cot involve

for me it was more or less because "I could be earning mani but it would still be the same amount as it was before, nothing would change"
hence the do-or-die decision to just quit, focus full-time study & get a cert to increase my 'value'

Depends if you are mentally or physically tired. If physically you can sleep early, eat better and do exercises. Taking vitamin B can also help.

If its a mental thing, then you need to identify cause, toxic workplace, overworked and see if you can change the situation. Mental is more difficult to solve.

Thanks /k!
