QUOTE(andrekua2 @ Nov 10 2024, 08:41 PM) I think it is safe to say that ZTE mess up this router very badly. Perhaps it was not designed to handling such load. Even the 5G alone also make it dc/hang sometimes if you dont dismantle the cover to cool it. I think they totally skimp the cooling for the router which causes it to overheat very easily. Even after I change all the thermal pad to a bigger one, plus 2x 120mm fan cooling both top and bottom heatsink, I still encounter problem sometimes. Yes, it no longer DC/reboot but sometimes there is some throttling going on (hard to say which chip) but it will slow down to 30Mbps max. you gave me an idea for my next project. i'll get heatsink for modem card and thermal conductive tape with cooling fan.

QUOTE(tmc @ Dec 12 2024, 10:13 AM) That makes the Umobile bundle with modem a good package. The mc888s router 5g reception is not super, but it is adequate. If put in effort to identify the best location+orientation for the router, 5G reception can be satisfactory. Yes, modem placement very important. This is the best placefor me. Just inch move either left or right has huge impact on the reception signal. With this modem i get at least 400++mbps.

QUOTE(digitalifelesss @ Jan 23 2025, 09:42 PM) I see you dismantled it do you think there's any where we can tap to attach external antenna to it? wonder what those white/black cable dangling at the middle there, looks very much like antenna connectors if we could just plug a connector up those 'ports'.... seen some video on youtube talking about it but not actually showing the internal mod wiring yes you can set external. i done mine but i'm just using another internal antenna not much different. might get better signal with proper external antenna.

QUOTE(fruitie @ Mar 26 2025, 10:10 AM) That's good. Mine max here is around 500Mbps which I'm quite happy about. Probably can go beyond 800mbps if my signal is great. I have yet to try testing near the tower.

Though it has built-in fan, the housing still feel hot. The fan might just triggers on its highest threshold. Have to diy extra cooling and tape any leakage. Now the housing don't feel warm at all. Have to do this as i hope it can last for long time even after contract expired. Also hoping by that time this modem is unlockable and can be modified just like b618. At the moment, this modem also can be unlocked if you have the unlock code. This post has been edited by ameyhazuan: Mar 26 2025, 01:44 PM

QUOTE(BOTAK_WAI @ Mar 26 2025, 02:43 PM) signal not good but sinr is good, very less interference. like i suggested before, want cooler just turn off the built in wifi, and connect to another strong wifi router via cat6 cable to act as access point. Way ahead of you. Been doing this since using b618. The router has openwrt and adguard as dns forwarder. Only using DOH and DOT. My house is 36 x 65 double storey. Wifi5 5Ghz can cover the whole house with this setup. Only use 1 wifi router. The other in the picture just for back up. Supposed there should be another 4G modem that will act as internet back up and volte phone. Ps. Turning off wifi on modem doesn't really reduce the heat as i already tried on this modem, hence the diy. CAT 5E cable is sufficient for 1 gigabit or less. QUOTE(BOTAK_WAI @ Mar 26 2025, 04:19 PM) lol....setup like this waifu no komplen ke? LOL, Wife and children never complain as long there's internet and it is fast. Yup, i kept some of them. Though just 11a/b with only wep encryption, might come in handy for experimental purpose. I did fired up those 2 and still working. Sadly no longer relevant for daily use. Glad nowadays devices become cheaper and less complicated. Last time i had to use a laptop for routing and combining multiple isp for backup and redundancy. Using FreeBSD for the OS. Now much simpler by using Openwrt and DDwrt and can be installed in any supported router.

QUOTE(BOTAK_WAI @ Mar 26 2025, 06:22 PM) how much was the 3com last time? couldn't afford those brands like 3com and linksys. only can wait peasant brand like aztech and dlink affordable baru buy. ya. 11a/b era zyxel was the brand telco mainly use. but totally not affordable until 11g, yang afford tu bangsawan pakai laptop. so 56k dial-up user mostly jump into adsl and adopt 11g wifi. Whoa, can't remember 😅. Was too long ago. Things back then were not cheap. My Compaq Armada M300 lappy in year 2000 bought for nearly 10k. That did not include the docking system to support floppy and cd drive. I also used U.S. Robotics modem before it was bought by 3com. It was 28.8k dial up. Imagine the struggle at that time that newer generation never get to taste. My slowest modem back then was Hayes 2.4kbps used for data transfer before internet was a thing in Malaysia.
