russian troops morale is certainly pretty low right now. for past months, there been videos of russian soldiers wives pleading, russian soldiers making group video about lack of ammo and/or treatment... and now confrontation with a commanding officer.
the shaping operations must have taken fruits due to the complain of ammunition shortages.
3/ In the recording, the discussion goes as follows. An officer (O) named Sergey is apparently informing a soldier (S) about the death of a popular man in their unit during the Ukrainian counter-offensive. The soldier is very angry about how the men have been treated:
4/ O: "I don't know if the battalion commander has told you or not about what just happened at the 'cucumber' [apparently a nickname for a position, probably referring to its shape on a map].
S: Please tell me, many have not heard.
O: A [Ukrainian] sabotage group ...
5/ S: Can you get closer [to the phone]?
O: A sabotage group attacked the guys, there were ten men left there along with your company man Sergei Maryanych. They took the fight, two men were taken prisoner.
S: Ours?
6/ O: Yes. Several men died. Who, nothing is known. The latest information – Sergey Maryanych went live on the radio and said "fire at me" and communication stopped. Whether Sergey Maryanych is alive or not I don't know. He did a heroic deed. And all his guys are out there.
7/ S: No, well, why was it necessary to destroy people there? You were there today, in the afternoon, everything was explained to you... Can you please explain the meaning of their deaths? What is it for?
O: An order.
8/ S: An order. Now how are we to explain this order to his relatives? Can you? Through what asshole did they make this order? Do we need [to hold] this fucking 'cucumber' with no artillery, with fucking nothing of anything? And more will die.
9/ O: So, whatever the situation, no one has taken this task away from us.
S: Tasks should also be set competently.
O: Look, again...
S: Competent commanders should be sent with us.
O: Come on, they get killed there, artillery hits them.
10/ S: Certainly, certainly! It's easier to sit there and give out tasks. Anyone can reach the 'five'. [unclear what this refers to] Why doesn't one of the seniors, deputy commanders, go under the command of this group?
O: Who told you they're not?
11/ S: We've been there ourselves. They take us to the [forest] strip and say: go over there.
O: And where was the battalion commander for three days?
S: We don't know. Yes, fuck knows where...
O: He was on the 'cucumber'.
12/ S: And why did he go out alone and leave the guys behind?
O: Because he's the battalion commander.
S: And the guys are nobody, they're expendable, right? It's cool in general, we'll get others. Now you try to explain this to our parents and families.
13/ S: And what will they tell you? Sanya, brother, you can explain if you have a conscience, and here, there's no officer's honour, no conscience, which is why we...
O: There's no need to talk about the honour of an officer.
14/ S: And because what about us, we've been abandoned. We've been abandoned.
O: Who's abandoned you? Have have you been abandoned?
S: Yes.
O: When?
S: When we first came in, they just left us.
O: And what, nobody was there?
15/ S: Nobody! There was nobody! The 'Frenchman' led us. We've just been abandoned. And lost, when we came out three days later, they hugged and kissed us because they didn't think we were alive any more.
16/ S: And the fucking battalion commander, fuck, was shouting "thank you" when he brought us in. "Thank you, thank you." Where's the "thank you", fuck that "thank you". Yes, he told stories... There are 5 people here who were in this group, they haven't invented this from here.
17/ S: I was standing on the road just now, he was passing by, he even fucking turned away so as not to see us. I'm on the phone talking, he drives by, I look at him, and he turned away like he didn't fucking notice. Not from you alone, Sergoya.
18/ S: Just turned the fuck away and flew the fuck off somewhere.
O: OK, I understand..."
19/ The death of Sergey Chepik Maryanych was announced on Russian social media on 21 June. He is said to have been the commander of the 6th motorised rifle company of the 2nd battalion of the 1486th Leningrad regiment.
20/ According to a post on VK, "he died heroically near Bakhmut, covering the retreat of his subordinates, Sergey fought back to the last and remained undefeated."
21/ An account from a Russian local news website says that he was covering the retreat of wounded comrades but was equipped with "only an automatic rifle with a pair of clips [60 rounds] and a pistol [and] grenades..." He is said to have called down Russian fire on himself.
22/ "Having run into an ambush and a serious breakthrough of the defence line, he accepted the battle... It was unequal... He was shot and finished off at close range..." His men are said to have renamed his unit the "Chepik Company" in his memory. /end
