Sakra is a 2023 wuxia film directed by Donnie Yen, who also co-produced the film with Wong Jing. It is adapted from the wuxia novel Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils written by Jin Yong. The film stars Donnie Yen, Chen Yuqi, and Cya Liu. The film will be released in OTT platforms in China at 2023 Chinese New Year. It will also be released in theatres in Malaysia on 16 January 2023.

I can think of at least 4 TV series and two movies based of this book.

Donnie Yen wears many hats in this one.

I have to say that the first fight scene is AMAZING!!!

Breathtaking really.

I have to mainly agree with the casting.

Because Donnie Yen is involved, the fighting scenes are a gamut of good to FREAKING AMAZING.

This is based on a well loved book.

This is where the movie stumble....

Many a people had tried to bring this book into a movie.

Namely

The Battle Wizard (1977) by Shaw Brothers the biggest Chinese cinema producers at the time. It was... funky. The emphasis is place on kungfu special effects instead of getting all the story into a movie.

Dragon Chronicles: The Maidens of Heavenly Mountain (1994) that was very ambitious and had Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow signed on for part 2 and 3 and have to add the movie was SOOOOOOOOOO far removed from the source material, movie goers avoided the movie like the plague (did not make money) causing the 2nd and 3rd movie to be scrapped.

So what I am trying to state here is that many a people had tried and not succeed to adapt this book to a movie.

The books concentrated on 3 main characters that was quite interwoven (story wise) to one another.

Isolating to only one character.... did not do the movie any favours.

The hardest sell is that movie wants to have an open mind about the artistic license it took with the story yet, if you are not familiar with the original story, you may not understand what had happened!!!

A catch 22 indeed.

Looking at the ending, they are hoping this does well do that sequels (about the other two characters) can be made.

We shall see if this movie does enough at the box office to justify that

wong yat wah the TVB drama still the best

Okay la, not really a huge blockbuster masterpiece but it's not disappointing either.

Directed by Donnie Yen, it brings back the swordman genre of the 70s movies where the swordmasters can leap up to rooftops and run over water.

Except that Donnie Yen now has the film tech at his disposal to gives much more super powers to the swordmasters.

Verdict: okay la, not disappointing as my 1st movie 🍿 of the year.

(The ending presents a more anticipating sequel. So if you're a movie fan, you should not miss this first movie.)

Is he qiao Feng in the movie?

Nice. Yes has a nice old school feel to it. Kind of reminds me of Reign of Assassins, as well as Wu Xia

I always have the impression Qiao Feng got a small tummy and a bit fat. 😊

I was there at the Gala Premiere, thought got meet and greet but only managed to wave at him while he's at arm's length.

The soundtrack, choreography and VFX were great but the plot was confusing.

It's going to be a franchise like Ip Man, so wait for the follow up.

Yeah, Qiao Feng is supposed to be very tall and broad-shouldered. He drinks a lot of wine, so possibly has a bit of wine belly.

Donnie Yen doesn't really fit the bill.

The one who fit the bill most I think is Bryan Leung Kar Yan in the 1982 TVB adaptation but my favourite version of the story is the Felix Wong TVB adaptation in 1997.

Most of the China adaptation have better effects but their adaptation still not as good as TVB’s version in the 90’s and 80’s.

I guess it’s mainly because Louis Cha wrote his stories in HK.

Haven't been watching TVB and China TV for many years so I don't recall this tale.

all these Chinese movies action movies, before punching and kicking reach their body, everyone start flying away .

Buat la je X-Men China movies, kalau tak ada budget untuk bayar lebih untuk stuntman !

TVB adaption was made back in 1982 and 1997.

I think a lot of people remembers the 1997 TVB version as the best adaption.

It's wuxia and they came out way before comic books movies became popular.

I recall this scene is when I get interested into Donnie Yen as actor when I was a kid.

Leung Ka Yan looks like Qiaofeng the most but for me I think Felix Wong was the better actor and that 1997 adaptation is the best.

Dugu got many kongfu invention ,.. he can win 9 Ying Sutra,..

Should be lesser imo. Guojing learn more greater martial arts than QF.

I think Guo Jing is already better than any of Five Greats isnt it?

With that Jiu Yin Zhen Jing some more.

The power level impression to me is :

Wu ya zi & Dugu & That old monk in library (Always number 1 ppl) > Qiao Feng/Guo Jing/Yang Guo/zhang wuji > 5 greats

Cause generally the earlier story in Jin Yong novels have stronger character.

Qiao should be below Dugu is true. Cause he wasnt really invincible but very durable lol.

Sometimes specialising is better than learning more styles.

Yang Guo learnt so many styles but I think he really level up when he specialised Dugu swordplay techniques and come out with his own palm style.

6 Meridian Divine Sword. It's true potential has never been realized because Duan Yu is a pacifist and is not a true fighter.

i like watch Donnie Yen in modern movies, not this ancient background movie

He is somehow like the rock, act what also same feeling.

And he is not suitable for this character.

Like miking old series and his popularity only.

I dunno whether in this movie got his two "brothers" or not as I have not seen it.

The story is going to be quite long and 2 part will not really tell a proper story unless it is rushed.

For better understanding of the story, watch the TV series.

I always recommend the 1997 TVB version. Despite the lower budget and lousy special effects, it is still the best adaptation of the story.
