Any lotus employee here? got few questions.

1. What's stopping customers from not being honest when checking out with scan and shop? Self checkout counters have countermeasures for people trying to cheat the system. Was there a risk assessment performed to see if its worth providing such features? The loss occured from theft lesser than the cost of maintaining cashiers ?

2. Why most of your customers are not even aware of this feature? Even with banners everywhere, you should have staff teaching customers how to download and use this app when they are queueing up. Most Malaysians are so cheapskate, just give them 1 can of coke or 100 plus to check out with Scan and Shop.

Yes, every time i visit lotus.

And no, they dont check my grocery bag on the quantity . Even if they do, i doubt they can count 1 by 1 and validate against the receipt.

Apparently other branches, employee do validate the receipt against your shopping bag. interesting

i use this always, and the cashier will always count the items.

the problem is ppl who dont use scan and shop also queuing at the scan and shop counter. every bangla, aunties will queue and have attitude say tak apa the cashier will manually scan.

need a lot of enforcement so that only scan and shop user use the counter.

I've used it since it was introduced. They need to enable all counters to accept scan and shop instead of just the express lane, otherwise no point queueing same as others.

And yes, the cashier do attempt to verify but since my shopping cart are full they did their best to check.

for me, this is the best approach on self-service - you pick up your item, scan it, and put it in the trolley. at checkout, just pay the total price, no longer need to empty my trolley, scan it, and arrange it in trolley again.

i'm loving this approach.

I used it once

It’s too troublesome to scan each of the grocery items

It’s not even user friendly if you buy a lot.

I end up just queue in a normal way.

How can the sensor detect items not scanned? Not like it can read the barcodes. It's to detect items with the black tag on it, usually they put it for Necafe and milk powder.

They also will check back the recording, maybe random check.

The responsibility to be honest and without any mistake now lies on the customer, case will be recorded on customer mistake of not scanning or flagged as stealing if multiple times it happens. Worst when it become police case.

So yeah, thanks but no thanks.

you need RFID tags for this kind of implementation, i doubt they implement for all items.

Clothes or electronics maybe, but if you see how decathlon implement their RFID tags in the label itself, you gotta pass the item through a machine to mark it as purchased.

Doubt lotus have such tech for now.

I agree that they should combine it, but maybe its better to keep it separate for now until it reaches a certain level of maturity and fine tuning before merging them. Not too sure whats the reasoning from the developers and management.

I don’t know why it takes so long for them to implement the self service machines

Some of the lotus branch already implement the service, some of them still depends on the manual cashiering and scan & shop.

There are people who are new to the tech or make honest mistake, how do we differentiate.

I believe they should have an internal procedure on managing these cases

i dunno man. most cashier, they check first how many items checked in system and how many stuff you have in hands/bag.

maybe their risk management/recovery team already calculate the data depends on which lotus branch.

if place A got many theft, the security will be tighter, CCTV, etc

Maybe I always go during peak or they're understaffed, never got checked.

The assistant are too busy helping those who are having trouble with payment/scanning since 1 person manning 6-8 self checkout counters.

this is not scan items 1 by 1 at the self checkout counter, its scanning items using your phone, then just scan 1 barcode at the self checkout counter for all the items you scanned previously on the app, pay then GTFO.

If caught on the spot, ask you to pay. If found out when review, flagged you as potential thief. Maybe next time whenever you make purchase, your video will be reviewed.

I think will be similar to predictive policing method.

Last time tangerine management sure lenient. Now under tomyam might be different.

Mistake is what people should be worry. Customer might repeat the same mistake, security might mistaken honest mistake as thief.

For 1 or 2 items a person is unlikely to make mistake. If whole trolley full of items, better don't use self checkout.

They should follow like USA. They used weight based self checkout. If total item weight actual > supposed weight of item that you scan, they will take your picture.

But got bug with this approach. If you have a child sitting on the trolley then consider stealing

This is already implemented when you scan your items 1 by 1 at the self checkout.

Are you proposing to force everyone to unload on the counter again? Defeats the purpose of scan and shop. Unless there is a huge weighing scale to put trolley on it or something

*
from non-lotus employee:
1) You still need to pay thru self-check out counter. Staff will check upon exit. Same go for this Scan and Shop. Of course, based on trust too...
2) I have been using it since 2021. The app so damn easy to use. If I recall, there are staff wearing green vest with Scan and Shop icon. You can ask them if you have any questions. Mulut'kan ada. Still need to spoon feed? Adoi...

sometimes not i dun wan self check out.

1) som of the discounted items, ie, if u buy their cooked food after 7-8pm, got 30~50% discount that doesn't apply if u self check out.

2) secondly, 1 of the biggest reason y sometimes dint use self check out is when i using my Amex card.
self check out is master/visa & ewallet only.
