Hi guys, my WF1000XM4 is draining battery fast, is it hinting that the battery need to be replaced? I have them for about 17 months in use.
Anyone done the battery replacement in Sony before? Wondering how much is the cost and will it damage the IP rating.
Thanks.

No, chat with Sony they do not provide battery replacement service in Malaysia...however if you have sufficient tools and skills, may try to DIY as there is tutorial available on Youtube.

It’s whether your brave enough to pry it open. Need to find suitable battery to exchange. Have you tried it on your xm4?

No I did not, I will just use till the battery fully die then replace a new TWS, instead of pry open it and damage it now, haha

Based on my online chat with SONY, it seems they don't provide battery replacement service but they do sell the TWS in loose in case you want to replace it . But I will just wait till newer version release and change to new one, since I know this brand new battery condition can only last me for 1 year plus...

The battery drain issue on the right earbuds is a global known issue. Many countries are giving replacement (both earbuds , not just battery replacement) even if it's out of warranty. It's not just US and Europe but Philippines as well.
I got mine replaced 2 weeks ago and the service center do acknowledge this issue. However, my unit was not out of warranty so I'm not sure if our country honour the global procedure. I would say give it a try and tell the service center front desk ppl about this. They may have special memo for this rare issue and insist then to check with their higher management for it. This is a known issue globally and can easily Google for evidence.

It's a known issue worldwide. Though I'm not sure if Sony Malaysia acknowledge it
Other countries allows for exchange even for out of warranty units

Dont think Sony Malaysia so generous...but lucky enough changing the battery yourself wont really need too technical.. I just done my XM3 battery change myself today...

Update*** For those who facing power draining issue, please get your unit check at Sony Service Center as Sony is offering FOC replacement to those affected unit, they will check your serial number and also your unit first before proceed to replace the earbuds, if the problem is your charging case then no FOC replacement will be offered. Ok today my little sister went to Sony Center Lowyat to get my out of warranty WFXM4 replaced. The Lowyat spokesperson said they will replace it for free with a new one no problem. But they advice to go to Lalaport or The Curve to get it replaced, if you want to get it faster.

They will change the buds to a new one both pairs.. but the charging case they will still use the old one. I heard the charging case they will fix and tune for it to work nicely with the new buds, that's all. So new pair of buds, but old charging case.

Yes out of warranty also can claim.. mine has been out of warranty for 3-4 months now, still can get it replaced. This is international now I think, previously only heard they replace it in the US.

Actually this 2 places where they say if you send it over it will only take a week to get it back. if you send at other Sony Center it will take more than 2 weeks or more.

Just got mine back testing the battery performance for now.

Just in case people need more proof that the replacement is free.
Check the receipt here biggrin.gif

Edit: The battery so far I've tested in my 3 hours session with it is at 70% left. Pretty good, I wonder if they upgraded the battery or something shocking.gif

I went to replaced mine at the curve and it takes around 1 week for me to get my replacement unit. As long as it is FOC then I guess worth the wait.

For first charge from Sony it seems to last longer. But actually not really if you put in the charging case it might not be 100%. It's trying to propagate with the charging case in terms of battery percentage. After you charge a few time, and put it in and out of the case. The battery indicator should be back to normal.

I've also asked Sony technician if those who has similar issue returned back to them after they fixed it. So far they say there isn't yet, try to monitor for a month they say, if for some reason it becomes the same, came back to them.

I'm having same battery drains issue for my earbud and got another 3 months warranty left. Can I go to any Sony Centre at my place to get it replaced or do I need to go to specifically Sony Service Centre? Just curious whether I can claim the warranty at normal Sony Centre since I bought it online.

If you have registered your product warranty at https://web.sony-asia.com/my/sign-in/ then it should be fine i think.

Suggest to just go and fix it as soon as you can. I don't think they will offer it for free for a long time one. Mine also expired back in March, no such issue.

My advice is to never update again. That is what i'm going to do at least.
Don't think there is any worth while update anymore at this point.

But if you are feeling adventurous, since you still have your extended warranty, you could try it out.
If anything still got a few months to get it all fixed again. Not worth my time imo.

Depends what you need...can see the review btw XM4 and 5 but I doubt the changes are minimal... I still using my XM3 and had battery change few months ago...
Unless it drop to below 1k else 1400 is too much for a pair of earbuds for my pay now...

This service center most likely didn't read the memo sent by Sony. Everything is supposedly free of charge, no need to even pay any or deposit to check and repair.

It's true. Over 2 years, they don't cover. The cost to change each side is RM250. If change one side, later second side have problems.

Any other places to get the battery replaced?

Mine is out of warranty for 4 months, battery drained was bad as one side can only tahan less than an hour. I send it to the sony service centre and now I gotten an notification that I can collect but the amount this RM 444. Wth? Why would I pay that amount to get a 'replaced' XM4? I might as well don't collect and just throw away my 'old' earbuds.

Called the hotline and the lady say cannot discount or waive the charges.

U tell them without my approval you guys proceed to repair?? You ask them take out the new battery and return the unit to you else you lodge police report...

IDK how many of you are aware of the wf1000xm4 battery drainage issue which happened a while ago. Here is a video explaining how scummy is Sony to deal with the whole saga. TLDR: Many WF-1000XM4 were defective. A firmware update caused battery drainage issue. Sony kept the issue under the rug. If you still have xm4 under warranty, they will replace the batteries for you. If you dont, go fly kite. Sony should recall all the faulty batches of products, but of course they are not doing it because it will cost them $$$.

I was lucky I sent in for repair during final month of warranty last year. 1 year forward, now right side of my earbuds is draining significantly faster than the other side. Im in utter disbelief to learn that replacing a single side costs RM444 out of warranty. I guess I'd have to buy OEM battery replacement and DIY.

WF-1000XM5 very unlikely will have defect as happened with XM4. But, XM4 will be my last Sony TWS because of how they deal with the defects. DO NOT BUY SONY EARPHONES.

Sorry to bring up the old post. Like you, I was lucky to have my 1000XM4 replaced few months before warranty expire, but now, my right earbud drain from 90% to 20% less than 20 minutes. left side seems still ok but definitely less than 6 hours. I would not consider anymore Sony wireless earbud. I think XM4 is last batch Made in Malaysia, XM5 is now made in China?

I used to be active in Sony Community Forum on this 1000XM4 battery drain issues... but Sony had closed down this community forum.

Just DIY change battery for my XM3 and XM4 lately. XM3 is easy to pry open. XM4 need a heat gun to loossen the glue. I think the earbuds can last for few years like the wired headset if we can change the battery ourselves.

Easy job.. 10mins can settle 1 side. Most time consuming on opening up earbud.. after that, it is easy like playing Lego..

guess I'm the latest to join the fast batt drain for the right bud, bought in 2022, light user, only noticed recently right bud batt is draining a lot more faster than left

live chat with local Sony agent, said no such service as free replacement, no memo no nothing from Sony M'sia, advised me to send in to nearest service center for diagnosis, which I'll need to pay min RM40+ for that service... damn...

Anyone still managed to get theirs claimed foc?
