JB”s people like to eat duck because a lot of Teo Chew”s descendants among the Chinese community locally. Hence 1st location going to suggest JB”s Baliban Braised Duck 八哩半卤鸭 .

that's popular(same as that noodle fish ball) but not for my tastebud, but uncle roger might love it though(as always the M**)

i would drive 5minutes away(Tun Aminah area), eat abalone bee hoon soup or bitter guard soup better, or a cafe that serve nice burger & pasta....

15minutes away get you claypot BKT(clear soup but not SG peppery type), laksa(curry noodle), ayam penyet(original taste)

further away another very popular laksa(curry noodle), claypot BKT(black soup), ikan bakar(stingray), bitter guard soup, hokkien porridge and many more

you need try ask ask locals(i mean true local), all above in business more than 20 year(except ayam penyet), some i never been their shop before but my ex colleague tapau(ate many times) for me....

I felt the MSG content not heavy , I’m sensitive toward MSG & usually will feel very thirsty for water if the food contain excessive amount of MSG, after the meal , surprisingly I didn’t felt any thirst for water.

BKT don’t want , Klang & Kepong got so many BKT, no need go all the way to JB to waste the quota 😄. I’m interested in the abalone bihun soup near HSA , what is the shop name ? Google map is showing Ah Piaw @ Taman Sri Tebrau, it is not near HSA.

Their kam heong fish slices is still quite good though.

Thank you for the feedback, I’ll keep that for the future revisit. Not going back so soon, got other places to go to fill the daily food quota.

In between Ah Meng vs Ah Kaw, which one is better in your opinion ? Got ppl told me Ah Kaw is the oldest outlet offering such dishes.

Woon Kiang is really popular with locals & Sinkies because it is inexpensive and portions are quite big. Friday/Sat/Sun might have long queues due to the influx of Sinkies.
But yeah, I agree that the taste is only so-so.

Best Kuay Teow Kia in JB is still Hai Wan (aka Neptune), in Taman Pelangi, Jalan Sri Pelangi, two shops away from a 7-Eleven.
Their kuay teow is smooth and has great texture.
The pig skin/egg is well braised, much tastier.
Tofu is silky smooth, can't find it anywhere else.
Lean meat or pork belly doesn't have the "pork" smell.
It is considerably more expensive than Woon Kiang, but tastes much better (imo).

Thanks , will keep this location for the next round of outstation visit.

Nearby Hai Wan, there is one restaurant named Sze Zai Hiong, they said eat shark fish . What is your opinion on this ? I haven’t visit yet .

Also got some contractors said if want to drink kopi at JB must go Ulu Tiram drink kopi. Claimed Ulu Tiram kopi the best in JB & kaw enough but didn’t give me any shop name . Got any insight on the location?

I've been to Sze Zai Hiong a number of times, but never eaten shark there. My family members usually order their signature deep fried tilapia (非洲魚) in sauce, I'm not a fan of tilapia though. I just eat the stir-fry dishes like vege and meat etc. The food is not bad, it's quite a popular place. Air-conditioned and clean.

I'm pretty sure I know which Ulu Tiram coffee shop those contractors are referring to. Sunshine Coffee (previously known as Sunshine Kopitiam)
1, Jalan Beladau 19,Taman Puteri Wangsa, 81800 Ulu Tiram,Johor

There's a stall selling nice HK style chee cheong fun (char siew/prawns/mixed). The kopi-C, teh-C and toast are good. Wantan mee is ok.

Previously, they used to be in a old and big corner lot kopitiam. The food/drink was REALLY good then.
Some years back they moved to a newer and smaller shop. Food standard seems to have dropped. Maybe my taste buds are demanding.

Overall experience around 6/10. The JB kopi tasted lighter compared to Klang Valley or northern region. I still prefer northern region kopi taste.

Only good thing you can see at JB, you can see a lot of Malay friends dining in Chinese operated Kopitiam.

Want to ask your opinion about Ikan Bakar Tampin. How will you rate the experience there ? I went last week but because the waiting time was 1 1/2 hours, I decided to opt for other.

Lunch at Tong Guan @ JB . It was located at the other end of Kin Hua Kopitiam. 10 years ago, this shop does not exist yet.

Tried their kopi pheng & seafood laksa ( it was a curry mee) .

The kopi pheng was good, I think they added palm sugar into the kopi. Rated 9/10, it was selling at RM 9.90/ glass.

The seafood laksa was selling at RM 19.90/ bowl. Tasted above average . Rated 7/10.

I visit this place for lunch quite often, usually eat the leicha/hamcha or Penang laksa.

The yong tau foo is quite good as well. You can select what you want, and ask to add accompanying dry/soup noodles if you want.

There's one more branch in Taman Sentosa, they have the exact same menu. There is an air-conditioned section, more comfortable.

Breakfast at Restorant Yee Swee for the Laksa ( it was a curry actually ).

The laksa was rich with the coconut milk flavour, flavorful , less spicy type. My only complaint was there seems to be price mismatched with the serving portion. This bowl cost RM 11.00/ bowl with the serving portion like Penang”s hawkers serving standard.

It tasted good but I won”t make any revisit as I personally think it is not worth the value.

Maju Jaya/Newspaper Street

Otak Shiduoli (Storey, they used to be at Jln Storey), their nasi lemak, mee siam and otak is quite good. They open very early, around 7.30~8?

Soon Chiang BKT, dark soup type. They also have pig stomach pepper soup. Pretty good, I come here for lunch sometimes.

Yi Bao mee hoon kueh, another popular lunch destination, they are usually packed, and close by 4+ They have various types of noodles to choose from, I like the "you mian".

Ka Ka (Jia Jia) dim sum, pretty generic dim sum, can find better ones.

KTK, I don't like it because it has the "porky" smell, but some people like my cousin prefer it.

Further down the street (away from Plaza Pelangi) there is also a beef noodle store run by a China lady, it's not bad too, eaten there a few times.

Further down the street (away from Plaza Pelangi) there is also a beef noodle store run by a China lady, it's not bad too, eaten there a few times.

I think it's just different preference! My cousin (grew up here) and his Thai wife, who are based overseas, absolutely love this KTK and always eats it several times when they come back. I still prefer Neptune/Hai Wang.

Surprisingly I've never tried Soon Lee mhk, even though I live pretty near and frequent this street. I guess I just stuck with what I know is good, Yi Bao.

Yeah, the beef noodle is past Soon Chiang BKT, further up.

Last last , decided to walk into Oh Yeah Noodle House within the close proximity. Too hungry already to look for alternative.

The menus offered looked like Penang”s Street food. Tried the Prawn Noodle with pork ribs, priced at RM 14.90/ bowl.

Tasted above average , it was good but just cannot beat Johnny”s Prawn Mee @ Subang Bestari. Rated aroud 8/10.

It is called “eight treasures tea” a.k.a “ba bao cha” , one of the Chinese herbal tea variant. Coz morning already took the Johor”s laksa , need to cool down the body with the herbal tea. You can request for less sugar.

Now for some list that I think not worth the value.

Tepian Tebrau , night time for grilled fish @ ikan bakar. I was being told that the crowds was no where during their prime before the MCO.

When we reached there, there were a few promoters standing on the road trying to promote their stalls. Got to know the Tip Top stall is the best( unfortunately sold out) & stall no.30 is the second best.

Decided to go for the stall no.30 for the stingray grill. Picked 2 pieces of stingray cuts. The selling prive was RM 9.50/ 100g @ RM95/kg ( eating gold…😅). Since not me paying, hantam saja la.

I know of this place but never eaten there, cos mum says it is expensive, her friend runs a dessert stall there.

For stingray I normally have it at Cedar Point, there are two stalls. Should be a bit cheaper. I think in general stingray is just expensive now.

Another addition to the list that I think not worth the value.

Seafood at Senimbong, Permas Jaya, JB. Last time this place was full of seafood restaurants, now only 3 operators remaining.

Food taste acceptable , freshness was below average. The price very obvious to slaugther tourists & Singaporean.

The only good thing on this location is the nice sea view facing Singapore. Average around RM 40-50/ pax.

I just tried this seafood restaurant at Impian Emas a week ago.

Restoran Shan Ming Impian Emas - 124866, Jalan Selatan Utama, Taman Impian Emas, 81300 Skudai, Johor

Had two servings of mud crabs, one kam heong and one black pepper. Quite fresh and well done. Also ordered a lot of other assorted dishes. Yam ring was nice.

Not cheap but I feel it was reasonably priced. Overall the food was pretty good, worth trying if you are nearby.

A few years ago they opened a branch in Pelangi very near my house, and it was a good competitor to San Lou restaurant one street away, but COVID struck and the business didn't survive, they went under.

I didn't know about this one until my sister told me this HW wantan mee is one of Singaporeans' favourite. Went to try it last month and it is not bad.

Same here, never eaten wantan mee for dinner and I don't go out for supper, so I'd never find out about this place normally.

They open at 6 PM until 1~2 AM iirc.

This morning dropped by for breakfast at Mok Gao Beef @ Kulai. An adjacent town to JB around 20min drive away.

Tried their dry version of mix beef organ & tendon.

Taste : 8/10
Price : 8/10
Ambient : 6.5/10 ( they operates in new village houses).

Total cost around RM 18 for the dry & soup option.

59 was ikan bakar at Tebrau market , then they venture into the mee soup
the mee soup they open beside ah piao wtm, is it possible he mistook it as ah piao
those days they are side by side, with tables sharing on the roadside
ah piao wtm was supplied by Yick hoe those days until ah piao sales shoot up till not enough mee I heard, then they produce their own
ah piao has quite a few branches after that, but then u know la, with branches dy the main shop hype slow down already

another old school wtm is ho Seng Kee, but They upmarket dy , shift to city square
those days need to wait 90 minutes for a bowl of wtm at the old shop, crazy

I always ate at Ho Seng Kee at the old shop too! It was sometimes a 30~40 min wait in the morning around 8~8.30, didn't encounter 90 mins before.

Ate a few times at City Square, it started at 10.90, but it's really pricey now, one bowl is 14 I think. Haven't been there since.

Personally not a big fan of fried rice, but my family likes the one from Meng Kitchen.

29, Jalan Keris 1, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80050 Johor Bahru, Johor

The food there is pretty good. Also has popular dishes like KL style black noodles, yam ring, fried sotong etc.

It is just a neighboring town not that far bro. The other day, I went to Pontian to look for pineapple. Surprising to know now Pontian is current pineapple town vs the old Pekan Nenas town in the geography & history book long time ago.

Yes, it is at Jalan Serampang, Pelangi. The bakery is downstairs, with a small area for cafe seating. The Lavender restaurant L. Cafe, is up the stairs on the left after you enter the main door.

The restaurant is pricey and has (had? not sure whether they still enforce it) a minimum one food order per customer policy.

Seems like the policy, which led to a lot of complaints, was added by the owner's daughter, who happens to be my ex-classmate from primary school.

*
I think that policy still applies hahahha
and the food if u want to eat at the cafe downstairs, u need to takeaway from upstairs hahahah
need to pay extra for tapao too

one of the reason I did not really went to L cafe was because of that policy

This traditional shop operated by the Chinese owner but all races are coming to dine in. Can see the photo of TMJ when he was young & grown up taken with the owner of the restaurant being displayed on the wall with a few other famous politician. They didn't serve pork & employed muslim staffs.

The assam fish in my opinion was acceptable slightly above average but the one so memorable was their fried senangin fish. The fried senangin appearance was below average in presentation but the moment you put it into your mouth, wah! so flavorful & crispy.

This one ppl brought me go eat , don't ask me how much.

Lontong Kuah & Lontong Kering (with beef rendang) at Onn Kitchen. They operates at a traditional Malay's wooden house.

Lontong Kering comes with beef rendang - must try & only available in the morning. If you are lucky, will get the coconut shredded topping - depends on availability of the day. RM 8/ serving - very flavorful & tasty, worth for value.

user posted image
RM 7/ serving - above average. I prefer lontong kering over kuah version.

Haha I'm in JB and yet I haven't tried this place before! Have seen it a few times though, it's very near a KPJ hospital.

Will go and try it soon, I love beef rendang and my family loves lontong kuah with kerisik (shredded coconut) & roti canai.

Hi,

Any good fish and chips to recommend in Johor Bahru?
I only know of Edwards, Fish & Co, Manhatten Fish Market and George and Dragons.

Any other eateries to recommend?

Thanks!
*
One year late but recently I tried Fin & Feather at Taman Molek and their fish and chips is really good!

Seabass is RM38 and Grouper is RM56, I had the seabass.

Portion is decent and the fish was fresh and juicy.
The batter is crispy and tasty without being oily or too salty.
The sides of fries and salad are good too.

Mushroom soup was great. RM18

There is also grilled fish, chicken chop, slow cooked chicken, and various pasta though I didn't try these. The menu doesn't have a large variety like other places, they probably focus on doing these dishes well.

There is a set lunch menu with more economical options from RM 19~25, comes with a free drink.

They have a banner proclaiming best fish and chips in town, I think they can live up to it.

If you like chicken rice, you should try Pine Chicken Rice (name of the place). 161 Jln Beringin, Taman Melodies. They close at around 6pm I think.

Air conditioned and a bit pricey but their chicken is so good! I recommend the white chicken or soy sauce chicken.
The spicy chicken feet (deboned) is also nice, but the portion is small.

All photos of the food look good. I used to travel to Johor Bahru back in the day during business trips but not anymore now. During those days we don't drop by these restaurants and mostly had meals in Malay restaurants as most of the staff are Malay. All curries! In the hotel it's buffet style.

Thank you for the kind remark on the photos 🙏.

Personally, I believe we only get 3 proper meals a day — so it’s up to us to make each one meaningful, depending on what kind of food we want to enjoy or experience.

Halal meals will have their own halal food-hunting session, and non-halal ones will have theirs. Life’s too short to keep repeating the same curries or hotel buffets every day. 😅

Johor actually has quite a few nice halal food options

I'm always all over the place 😆. Sometimes I’m just too lazy to post, and later I can’t even remember what I ate. Thinking about it now, better to post some things as a record for future reference.

Thanks for the recommendation, bro. Will definitely give it a try. notworthy.gif 👍
