I heard rumours that Maxis will get exclusive deal with Apple for iPhone next year. This came from internal source. Meaning, the phone will be locked to Maxis 012 or 017 only.

If this is something along the line of apple policy i'm not suprised at all.

Knowing that maxis is somehow managed with a slight influence of government, i find it silly if they do not intervene and come out with a funny proposal.

That being said and done, iPhone might just be released to public telco after all. Locking it is like their iPOD /iTunes concept when they started. Look at where they are now after "unlocking" iTunes to the public.

OmniAtlas has a point and like i've mentioned earlier, i totally understand it. But i'm rather conservative on the point that the sales in US reflects those in Malaysia even in the future. iPhone i'd admit is very much the "in" thing among the youths, but not much can be said of those that wants to use a phone as it is. I'm all in for the petition to see what response Maxis give, lets just see if they suprise me with their level of attention given to iPhone for now

im not saying that maxis will just sit back and keep one eye shut regarding the whole iphone issue.

my main point for now is the fact that signing this so-call 'petition' would be pointless as apple have already announced that the asia region would only receive their share of iphones in 2008, with that being said maxis would not do anything about this issue until its official release.

its also pretty obvious that maxis would ensure that its users are able to use this device without any problems in order to sustain their market share among the other service providers such as digi, celcom etc. whistling.gif

Latest news, (thanks Wei!):

updates for Maxis
The last call summary:
- Maxis spoken to Apple Malaysia asked for iPhone test unit(s). Apple Malaysia refuse to help. Their reason is it's not launch here.
- Maxis have no choice but to get ppl bring in hacked iPhone.
- The iPhone are yet to arrive. (supposed to be these 2 days).
- They aware the problem.
- They received many complains.
- The technical department are waiting for the iPhone now.
- Also inform them on the issue happened in Kuwait, emailed the details to them.
- Most part of KL are using Siemen/Nokia hardware, but certain part of Subang Jaya are using Ericsson.
- The theory now is, if it is Siemen/Nokia hardware issue, then it might work with the Ericsson towers in Subang Jaya. Maybe someone can try around in Subang Jaya? If it is not working still. Then the problem might not be the Siemen/Nokia hardware.

The point everyone missed who says this is a waste of time is that local telcos here do not lock the majority of their phones to a contract.

A user would *expect* any phone he/she purchase complying to the GSM standard to work with ANY of the local networks.

Another point worth looking is that telcos have agreements with other telcos to enable global roaming for all of their users (who are using many different types and brands of mobile devices) so the more devices they support, the more deals they can make to each other (this is a very simplistic correlation). So its to the benefit of perception and value that all devices are supported in one way or the other (and in this case, a phone made by Apple) so customers would gravitate towards a particular telco.

Hosting a closed network benefits no one, unless you have significant benefits or technological features (DoCoMo).

Good news -- Maxis got back to me and they have received their iphones. They are now in the process of testing and fixing the problem.

Hopefully all of this will be resolved soon.

Well guys, I think all is well now. Your many complaints have led to Maxis fixing the problem. Although not all areas are fully compatible with Maxis, I'm sure with time, this will also be fixed.

Good job.

1)  APPLE iPHONE ON MAXIS NETWORK

Impact: All Maxis Centres, SRG, SCC and MMCC

On 15/11/2007 a network upgrade in major areas in Klang Valley was completed successfully to support the Apple iPhone.

With the upgrade, Maxis network is able to support Apple iPhone on both incoming and outgoing calls. Apple iPhone customers who previously reported unable to receive calls should be able to receive calls now.

Kindly inform all Apple iPhone customers previously reported unable to receive calls accordingly

I don't get it. It's officially registered under AT&T telco and now you complain to unofficial telco?
