actually i feel the players playing better and fitter (except maguire).. but the strategy is wrong with the placement of the players... hence make it looks like everything is so wrong... the wrong part is maguire who slow jog all the time and mcfred who is not really ready to control the midfield with ETH's style... second half when we switch erikssen to midfield, the control can be seen differently...

you could say he fielded pretty much the same individuals in the past, but do consider ETH tried to implement different play style with some players in different position or role.

and as we all know, it backfired ... but is it the exact same things down to the tee? I'm not so sure .. it's only 1st game (not even full half) because ETH tweak the formation and players in the 2nd half...

Does anyone see that Maguire likes to step forward, as if to "help" Fred, thus leaving space in behind him for opposition striker to run off him? When he does this, Lisandro has to cover the space he vacated, and it dragged Shaw over to cover for Lisandro, and 2 v 1 will happen on Shaw side.  He did that a lot last season and again against Brighton.  Someone should tell Maguire to stop doing that.

I've mentioned this before. Maguire is a decent centre back. He is strong, dominant in the air and very physical. What he isn't, is fast or have good positioning. So, to play to his strength, stick him in the back, let him handle crosses into the box, especially since ddg dont come out and claim very often. But instead, he plays like he's very adept at a high line. You can see if varane or martinez fail to intercept early, they often can sprint back and at least throw off the attacker. But when maguire fail his interception, you'll never see him near any threatening attacker for the rest of the attack. I would blame this on the manager set up, but i dunno why change manager but still same style. Maybe they are seeing something we aren't.

some ppl like very high and mighty

labelling players as reject because other clubs willing to sell / not in plan / bla bla bla reasons like playing out of position, not properly utilised to the strengths, etc

any player can be a good player if he can fit into play style and flourish/produce good performance display

we have seen many "non-reject" signings turned into terrible players too, like Sanchez, Pogba, Di Maria

Even Henry was like kind of a reject in Juventus (play in LW and normal/mediocre performance) before the move to Highbury ...

the point is … becoming surplus doesn’t mean is a reject. Even by simple definition extra doesn’t mean subpar or compromised quality.

There are some key differences but most importantly I would classify reject as players who cant perform at clubs after long time even given many chances (like Hazard at Real Madrid now, but no one expect his fall of form and injury seeing his crazy form in EPL). Other examples would be like Isco (motivation issue) and James Rodriguez ..

For example, before Ozil and Di Maria at Real Madrid … they replaced Sneijder and Robben who are still in prime and top performance … however they were judged by Perez as not glamorous enough and just shipped out. Good for the Dutch players that they have won more else where and obtained praises and acknowledgment for their performance.

If we were to buy Sneijder and Robben at that time, would you call them reject or surplus?

Same case as Ozil and Di Maria, Perez found new shiny toys again after some years later and the cycle repeat with Bale, etc.
Obviously Di Maria failed at Man Utd as his heart is not here while Ozil just lost the motivation after some time in Arsenal. However, at no time of their transfer out of Real Madrid, their skills or performance are being questioned. Again, at that point of time, they are surplus because of Galaticco policy rather than for footballing or decline reason …

Anyway, for me just calling players as rejects are easy or lazy.
Not the first time as well for good players go to Barca and being played out of position then ppl criticised them for performance and shipped out later and performed elsewhere again - Fabregas (Chelsea) and maybe Coutinho (Bayern) as the more recent example. Even Real Madrid “reject” Eto’o (he was nvr given a chance) went on and won more trophies in his career during the Barca domination period and at Inter.

So it seems like buying surplus player from another team isnt an issue as long as is good fit … while getting reject has high chance of failure due to pre-existing issues ..
Question for thought, is Sterling or Jesus surplus to City or reject?
