I'm currently eyeing on a used car from a used car dealership. It's my first time buying a car and would be really grateful if members can help in explaining the procedure by buying from dealership.

1. I'd want to do a pre-purchase inspection with independent mechanic. Would dealer normally allow this in Malaysia? If yes, how's the procedure typically like? Deposit required?

2. What's the market rate for all the fees other than car price? (i.e. agreement fees, thumbprint fee, transaction fee, etc?) What are the other fees expected from dealer?

3. Is there any fees that shall be typically borne by dealer when a deal is made?

4. Is it standard practice to purchase insurance through the car dealership?

5. Lastly, any review or feedback from Instant Portfolio Sdn Bhd at OKR AUTO CITY Old Klang Road?

Thanks in advance!

I can answer your first question. Last time I asked the dealer whether I can drive the car to my trusted mechanic for inspection. I gave my mechanic RM50 for his checking.

Was quoted RM3,500 for all the processing fee for a RM31k car. Is it standard?

And will require RM1,000 booking fee for pre-sales inspection. Pre-sales inspection (by my mechanic) RM120.

Did the car dealer ask for booking fee before you can get it for pre-sales inspection? Was told if there's issue with pre-sales inspection will refund fully the booking fee.

Fair enough, he also scared you window shopping or damage his car, waste his time only. Ask him to put in writing that booking fee is fully refundable for any reason whatsoever. And don't put too much booking fee, depending on how much the car price is

Don't be scammed by the "processing fees". They charge you 3.5k for nothing. The JPJ transfer, paperworks and so on cost them next to nothing. It's just additional profit for them on top of what they are already charging for the car.

You can google or even watch youtube videos on processing fees. A few used car dealers actually explain how this is a scam.

And good luck cause you need a lot of it.

If the dealer has confidence with the car, they shall be allowed to bring the car to the SC or workshop to check.

the SC/Workshop should be arranged nearby the dealer shop area la.. dont from KL go to shah alam..

but if the dealer die die must have deposit or booking.. i think better forget about it.. mana tahu later he burns your deposit.. even if the car has a problem, it doesn't mean they will give back you..

it is easy to give.. and hard to take back

Pre-Purchase Inspection: I'd like an independent mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection. Do dealers usually allow this in Malaysia? If they do, what’s the typical procedure? Is a deposit typically required before they agree to it?"

Dealerships can be hit or miss, so take your time. Check the car’s history report to see if it’s been in any accidents or had major repairs.

Hate the processing fees. Advertise car price at rm155k, but when asked for Odr price, it become 170+ before nego, all due to processing fees. Ts, better find direct owner at fb marketplace etc
